Authentic Thai Cuisine from the HDB Blocks Downstairs in Ang Mo Kio.
Yay, Nice Rice is much easier for me to get to now that it isn't all the way up in Ang Mo Kio anymore (51 Telok Ayer Street #01-10).
Popular Soya Milk Stall in Beo Crescent Market.
The cheesesteak burger tasted quite good, with the beef tender, well marinated and tasty.
Old school and good tasting, with small fresh shrimps, tender pork slices and qq fishcakes. The soup was nice and balanced – clear, sweet, slightly peppery, with the flavours of pork and prawn.
Recommended by Wong Ah Yoke as one of the 10 cheap and good eats in Ang Mo Kio. The noodles were wiry and springy, pork balls and sliced and minced pork fresh, pork lard large and crispy, and mushrooms braised nicely and bouncy. The sauce with chilli, dried shrimp, garlic, shallots and ginger was very strongly vinegary and spicy though, overwhelming all other flavours.
First Culinary is located at ITE in Ang Mo Kio and it’s not exactly what you expect to find at a educational institution.
Recommended by Johor Kaki. The Pork Leg Bi Tai Mak was really smooth, slippery and qq in a vinegary and spicy sauce, the meat topping was strong and savoury, and the trotters were tender and lightly braised. Satisfying in terms of the strong flavours.
The sheng mian was more doughy, chewy and qq, and didn’t have the alkaline flavour of the mee kia at all. The noodles lent a sheen of oil, viscosity and an even more pronounced egginess to the broth, making it more umami. Still good, but not sure whether this was better.
Recommended by 8 Days. The Buah Keluak Chicken Chop was very buah keluak, in a sauce with turmeric, lemongrass, onions and other aromatics. The chicken chop was not bad – bitey with the buah keluak flavours dominating. The aglio olio pasta was slightly spicy and al dente. The wedges were crispy and the achar really piquant and crisp, cutting through the heavy flavours.
