Service at Don Meijin is completely self-service, with ordering, collection, and payment over the counter.
Blessed with a chill-out ambience, polite staff and a somewhat efficient service despite the long queues, Don Meijin is a good respite from the run-off-the-mill Japanese chain restaurants.
All rice bowls are served with a bed of Hokkaido’s short grain Japanese rice and boasts a consistent al dente quality. Can't go wrong with Japanese rice for me.
Apart from the highly raved Spicy Chili Crab Tendon, the other component which attract diners at Don Meijin would be the variety of donburi options.
My favourite has to go to the Mille Feuille Katsu Don ($12.80). Instead of deep frying the whole slab of pork loin, the pork loin is actually made by layering 14 thin slices of marinated pork loin and then coated with nama panko.
Worth a mention was the Mille Feuille Katsu Don ($12.80), not the Mille Feuille cake that we are familiar with. Instead, 14 layers of thinly sliced and marinated pork loin were used to create a Mille Feuille lookalike appearance.
盖饭当中最具本地特色的辛香辣椒螃蟹天丼 (Spicy Chilli Crab Tendon, $14.80),基本上就是以天丼为基础,淋上特别调制的辣椒螃蟹酱。
Unlike the usual tonkatsu that requires a fair bit of work while chewing, my teeth sank into the stack of mille feuille pork with little effort.
You can try this Chilli Crab Tendon, if you need something to spice up your life OR just want to try another Tendon in Singapore.
