The popiah is the best I've tasted in Penang - tasty with a good balance of fillings. The chilli paste actually makes a presence so there's an oomph to the popiah! I'm not used to the soggy-ness of the popiah but the taste and texture was good enough for me to completely disregard it.

We had a Ballin' On A Budget (RM 18), a steamed potatoes stuffed with broccoli, corn, ham and melted cheese topped with sour cream onion. It is freshly made upon ordered, considering we waited for about 20 minutes before the food arrives. The potato served was soft but we thought it could be made slightly mushier for a better overall texture. Seasoning could be improved as well as the potatoes tasted a little bold. The overall dish make senses when you have the potatoes together with the ham and sour cream onion, otherwise it tasted odd when individual elements are consumed separately. The cheese used, which we supposed to be raclette did not impress as it ended up as a separate layer on top of the potatoes

None of the delicate Cantonese delicacies disappoint at Grand Imperial but their Siew Mai left us with the deepest impression. Sliced Meat was used in the Pork Dumplings... in lieu of the skimp-conventional Minced Meat. The texture was great- firm with a meaty bite, even better with the addition of crunchy Shrimp. Equally delicious was their Lau Sha Bao, though in dainty portion; the filling was nicely done. It possessed a gritty texture with mellow Salty-essence and expertly sweetened. Dim Sum dishes were above par but the wait was a little long; worth a visit nevertheless.

Tokyo Yakitori is a new Japanese restaurant in town, sister restaurant to one of the oldest Japanese joints in Penang- Kirishima Japanese Restaurant (at Cititel Penang) but both are geographically near to each other. Though Tokyo Yakitori is just a few shops away from Kirishima, both are targeting different segments- Kirishima's offering is more superior in terms of ingredients and price points while Tokyo Yakitori is more wallet-friendly. Notwithstanding, Tokyo Yakitori still offers decent Japanese delights- from the standard Japanese appetizers to Yakitori (Japanese Skewers) to Sushi, Ramen and Bento Sets. In the evening, the place is turned into a restaurant cum bar that offers a vast selection of Japanese Sake to pair over their range of Skewers. Nevertheless, the place is still suitable for all age-range of diners and that includes both teetotalers and drinkers. Tokyo Yakitori can be found at the T-junction of Sri Bahari Road and Penang Road (next to Kheng Pin Cafe).

The Char Hor Fun comes with a decent wok scent along with an aromatic egg in the starchy gravy. If we were to give a rating, it would be one of the above average taste Char Hor Fun we tasted in Penang.

The course mellows out to finish in a Tuak Sorbet with Gula Melaka Syrup, Coconut Flakes, and Rose Rice Cake. To get the perfect taste, we were instructed to blend in the ingredients together. It is somehow more flavorful, balanced by a delicate sweetness and texture. All well ends well with a cup of Nutmeg Tea.

The banana leaf rice set is served in a combination of traditional and modern way. Rice is still being laid on a banana leaf, but the dishes and gravies are served in a single steel cup instead of being scooped on the banana leaf. ÉNFD is an abbreviation of 'Énfold'- pronounced as 'unfold' with a meaning of 'gather and envelop' people through good food. It runs like a private kitchen, though walk-ins are welcome, the dining space is limited and could only host no more than 15 diners at a time. The dining hall preserves the sense of heritage with minimal interior decor; probably meant to encourage and enhance camaraderie amongst diners. It is a space that one could really talk and engage with each other. On the menu, the list of magical offering is unique and creatively crafted by the team behind ÉNFD; with focus on using Herbs and Spices ('local flavors') to intermingle with international flavors. The conservatives will find the menu too playful and to me, this is the attitude in lacking especially in the culinary scene in Penang. The brunch menu is only available on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 am to 3 pm.

If you have passed by Lebuh McNair recently, chances are high that you have seen this stretch of heritage houses with odd embellishment vying for attention. It does not suggest a thing and some actually though it was a museum-to-be but in actual fact, it comprises of restaurants jointly named as "McNair Restaurants", serving both Peranakan Nyonya cuisine and Western cuisine. Not much signage out the front and the exaggerated decoration outside means nothing but the interior suggests otherwise. Step in the restaurant and you will see traces of the "Nyonya-Peranakan" traits- from the usual Peranakan antique tiles to seemingly priceless heirloom displayed on the wall. Ironically, the menu is not limited to Peranakan cuisine... there are some Western options for those with Western palate either. Prices are reasonable and it isn't a stretch to go for Seafood dishes like Assam Pedas Fish or Assam Prawns. It is also note-worthy that McNair Restaurants are fully air-conditioned and serve family-style servings.

A.Maze Restaurant

63A, Jalan Nagor 10050 George Town Pulau Pinang Malaysia

A Maze, the brain child of Chef Wei, is a rather small restaurant, sitting only 8 pax per night, however this allows for a rather intimate affair as you will be seated Chef side as he guides you along course by course. Located in the heart of George Town, Penang. Serving Alternative Cuisine Chef Wei draws inspiration from the vibrant backdrop of the island he resides in, from it’s rich heritage and culture to the interesting produces that are found in and around this area, working with the seasons, a new course of meal is served every month. Pulling apart, reconstituting, reinterpreting, reinventing and innovating, A Maze’s ambitions are to break expectations, challenge conventions and leave you lost in wonderment on a culinary experience. There are no menus and no ordering here, we ask that you bring an open mind and an appetite, and allow Chef Wei to bring you on a journey a spoonful at a time.

  • kenhuntfood.com
  • 2016-12-09 00:00:00+00:00
Modernist cuisine or Molecular Gastronomy might not be new to the world but it's definitely something to range over, particularly for Penangites. Innovation is a critical element when it comes to a modernist kitchen- not only that the Chef must change the customary way one would prepare and present the dish but the Chef must bring a change to how diners experience the food either. Adventurous eaters can make their way to the small alley at Nagore Square (where all the bars and small little shops located); A.Maze occupies a strategic corner right next to the vacant land; from outside, the restaurant suggests a nary of information on what it is about to serve, inside... there are only 8 seats arranged snugly facing a small kitchen manned by the Chef-Owner Chef Wei. The very young and talented Chef honed his culinary skills from overseas and had had working experience in Michelin-starred restaurants. A.Maze serves "Omakase" which literally means "leave it to the Chef", the menu is not informed to diners and it relies entirely on "trust" but Chef Wei is not a one-trick pony- diners' sense of taste is not the only thing that changes here... the "Omakse" menu switches once a month and it depends on the seasonal offering. Thanks to Chef Wei, we had the opportunity to join him in his extraordinary gastronomical journey.

Therefore, it carries a bit of soury taste, well compliment with chutney and sambar that was left on every table for unlimited refill. First timer should go with the plain dosai.
