We wanted Hainanese Chicken Chop but it was Hainanese Chicken Chop Rice that was sent to our table. The slab of Chicken Chop was well-coated with Egg and it was delicious. We love the meaty texture with a burst of alluring Eggy aroma. The gravy was a disappointment though, it was nothing Hainanese; on its own, the Chicken Chop was good but more to a misnomer to call it Hainanese Chicken Chop

The Koay Teow Soup was good but not great. Soup is lightly scented but as we consumed it, the taste started to build up. It was scantly topped with slices of duck meats that hardly justify its higher price tags. If you prefer a bolder taste, add some pepper, soy sauce and chili to spice it up. Probably this is one of the most expensive hawker Koay Teow Soup we ever had in Penang.

Ever wondered why you can always find happy diners feasting on an array of Thai-influenced dishes at one small alley along Kimberley Street? Tucked right next to a curious, unappealing shop named "Thai Shop", the alley next to it is associated with "Thai Shop"... with a few stalls selling Thai delicacies displayed outside. The action scene can be found at the end of the alley- stir frying of dishes, grilling of the Thai Pork Skewers, shaving of ice for Tub Tim Krob; all stalls are manned by Thai. For a moment, we thought we were dining in an alley at Hatyai, Thailand. The Pork-based menu is small and non-rice eaters will not find a space here. Most dishes are served with rice. We aimlessly walked into "Thai Shop", thinking that someone would attend to us but we were wrong. Diners who wish to dine in must place their orders at the alley first before finding a seat inside the shop; dine-in at the tables by the alley otherwise. Definitely a place not to be missed by Thai food devotees.

Fancy Western breakfast while visiting Chowrasta Market? More options available for early risers at the clamoring local market; Coffee And Friends Cafe is one of the new additions to Georgetown and can be found right in front of the entrance to Chowrasta Market at Kimberley Street. The one-month old cafe offers a simple and no-frills menu at present... a selection of Western Brunch items (available from 8 am to 12 pm daily) and some Sandwiches. The cafe boasts over its home-made food... all are made from scratch, in-house by their Chef using high quality ingredients. We certainly could not agree more and were more than happy with the food, but we certainly hope to see more choices in the future rather than to choose from a menu of 3 (breakfast) items only. Coffee And Friends Cafe is located at Lebuh Kimberley, right next to the junction of Jalan Sungai Ujong (opposite to Shong Hor Hin Herbal Tea).

Curry Mee (otherwise known as Curry Laksa in central region) has always been one of Penangites' favorite local delicacies but the newly opened eatery along Kimberley Street offers the noodles with an upgrade. While the classic bowl of Curry Mee costs Rm 5 here, the deep pockets could go for the premium option with plenty of Seafood and Meat topped, at the price of Rm 11.50. The entire shop is dedicated to serving Curry Mee and has been drawing great attention from early risers and market-goers (right in front of the entrance to Chowrasta Market- Kimberley Street entrance). Curry Mee enthusiasts might welcome the idea but we'd like to think otherwise, perhaps a bowl of delicious-classic Curry Mee is good enough for us.

A dish not to be missed by Chocolate lovers. The dessert plate gathered everything chocolaty... starting from the nutty Chocolate Brownie and creamy Mascarpone.... to Chocolate Ice Cream and Shards. The course mellows out to finish in a Tuak Sorbet with Gula Melaka Syrup, Coconut Flakes, and Rose Rice Cake. To get the perfect taste, we were instructed to blend in the ingredients together. It is somehow more flavorful, balanced by a delicate sweetness and texture. All well ends well with a cup of Nutmeg Tea.

With sultry hot tropical weather all year long, it should be no surprise that Penang is swimming with amazing Ice Cream. The endless sweltering heat in Penang means non-stop cravings for a good serving of the icy sweet treat but forget the commercial ersatz brands that offer either Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry Ice Cream. For 4 years (since end of 2013), The Ais has been quietly serving some of the most delicate and healthy artisan Ice Cream in town. Co-founders Jonathan and Lydia's belief in healthy-eating cemented the core principal of The Ais; all products are made with care and low sugar content. The Ais was merely an online business but has since established its brick and mortar outlet in Pulau Tikus earlier (attached with an organic shop). In March 2017, It has now moved into a new location at Chulia Street and offering more options to its patrons. With more than 40 flavors available (not your usual boring flavors), there will be at least 3 alcohol-based Ice Cream and 16 types of Ice Cream on offer at all times (on rotation basis- you might not get some flavors on certain days); for those who concern, Vegan Ice Cream is also available.

ÉNFD is an abbreviation of 'Énfold'- pronounced as 'unfold' with a meaning of 'gather and envelop' people through good food. It runs like a private kitchen, though walk-ins are welcome, the dining space is limited and could only host no more than 15 diners at a time. The dining hall preserves the sense of heritage with minimal interior decor; probably meant to encourage and enhance camaraderie amongst diners. It is a space that one could really talk and engage with each other. On the menu, the list of magical offering is unique and creatively crafted by the team behind ÉNFD; with focus on using Herbs and Spices ('local flavors') to intermingle with international flavors. The conservatives will find the menu too playful and to me, this is the attitude in lacking especially in the culinary scene in Penang. The brunch menu is only available on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 am to 3 pm.

If you have passed by Lebuh McNair recently, chances are high that you have seen this stretch of heritage houses with odd embellishment vying for attention. It does not suggest a thing and some actually though it was a museum-to-be but in actual fact, it comprises of restaurants jointly named as "McNair Restaurants", serving both Peranakan Nyonya cuisine and Western cuisine. Not much signage out the front and the exaggerated decoration outside means nothing but the interior suggests otherwise. Step in the restaurant and you will see traces of the "Nyonya-Peranakan" traits- from the usual Peranakan antique tiles to seemingly priceless heirloom displayed on the wall. Ironically, the menu is not limited to Peranakan cuisine... there are some Western options for those with Western palate either. Prices are reasonable and it isn't a stretch to go for Seafood dishes like Assam Pedas Fish or Assam Prawns. It is also note-worthy that McNair Restaurants are fully air-conditioned and serve family-style servings.

A Maze, the brain child of Chef Wei, is a rather small restaurant, sitting only 8 pax per night, however this allows for a rather intimate affair as you will be seated Chef side as he guides you along course by course. Located in the heart of George Town, Penang. Serving Alternative Cuisine Chef Wei draws inspiration from the vibrant backdrop of the island he resides in, from it’s rich heritage and culture to the interesting produces that are found in and around this area, working with the seasons, a new course of meal is served every month. Pulling apart, reconstituting, reinterpreting, reinventing and innovating, A Maze’s ambitions are to break expectations, challenge conventions and leave you lost in wonderment on a culinary experience. There are no menus and no ordering here, we ask that you bring an open mind and an appetite, and allow Chef Wei to bring you on a journey a spoonful at a time.

  • kenhuntfood.com

Modernist cuisine or Molecular Gastronomy might not be new to the world but it's definitely something to range over, particularly for Penangites. Innovation is a critical element when it comes to a modernist kitchen- not only that the Chef must change the customary way one would prepare and present the dish but the Chef must bring a change to how diners experience the food either. Adventurous eaters can make their way to the small alley at Nagore Square (where all the bars and small little shops located); A.Maze occupies a strategic corner right next to the vacant land; from outside, the restaurant suggests a nary of information on what it is about to serve, inside... there are only 8 seats arranged snugly facing a small kitchen manned by the Chef-Owner Chef Wei. The very young and talented Chef honed his culinary skills from overseas and had had working experience in Michelin-starred restaurants. A.Maze serves "Omakase" which literally means "leave it to the Chef", the menu is not informed to diners and it relies entirely on "trust" but Chef Wei is not a one-trick pony- diners' sense of taste is not the only thing that changes here... the "Omakse" menu switches once a month and it depends on the seasonal offering. Thanks to Chef Wei, we had the opportunity to join him in his extraordinary gastronomical journey.

Not too sure if it meant to be a hipster spot, Le Cafe does not have a big and clear signage, there's a small one at the side door (smaller than its window) though. It occupies a corner lot at Bricklin Road, a stone's throw distance away from the no-through road of Jalan Tye Kee Yoon and GAMA Supermarket. The interior decor is minimalist with a little industrial finishing, at the end of the cafe is a comfortable space most suitable for hipster-portraiture shots. Le offers a small Toast-focused menu in the mornings and snacks with alcohols for the rest of the days. In the evenings, visitors may opt to chill out at the al-fresco alley right next to the cafe. It may be a fun place to hangout or for a cup of drinks but we thought the food menu was a little less-exciting...

Krsna should be the place to check out their dosai served on banana leaf. Dosai is a kind of Indian crepe that made from rice and black gram that is naturally fermented overnight. Therefore, it carries a bit of soury taste, well compliment with chutney and sambar that was left on every table for unlimited refill. First timer should go with the plain dosai. Spicy lover may go for the onion version while masala dosai for those opting for much filling option.
