Traditional-classic Foo Chow delights are not common in Penang's food scene, at least not ubiquitously found in any hawker centers but one particular coffee shop in town has been dishing out Foo Chow delicacies for years. Right smack in town, Cowboy Street Cafe is a stone's throw distance away from the famous mural art paint at Armenian Street. Foo Chow classics basically make up the menu, along with some localized Western dishes and nibbles but the price points are slightly above average (imagine Koay Teow Th'ng with Foo Chow Fish Balls at Rm 10). Hefty price tags but if you in dire need to satiate your craving for Foo Chow dishes, this is the place you should go.

Cool off at Ice Cafe, one of the latest hit in Penang that takes the definition of 'cool' to a whole new level. If the idea of freezing yourself while enjoying a serving of icy cold sweet treat intrigues you, you should really check it out. Ice Cafe is situated on the second floor of a building along Victoria Street (above Phantamania Penang); as you walk up the stairs, you will notice that the stickers are indicating that there's a drop in temperature. True enough, we felt the cold breeze blowing right smack to our face as we walked up. Soon, you will arrive at the entrance to Ice Cafe that resembles castle door. Push the door open and you will find yourself in a magical land of ice with igloo, ice bed, and everything cold but they are real though, those are just for decorative purposes. While it did indicate that the temperature was around 10 degree Celsius, we did not think it was that cold, probably a little lower than 20 degree Celsius. The entrance to Ice Cafe is free but visitors are expect to at least order a drink or icy treat during the stay at the cafe.

Indian-inspired Sweet & Sour Chicken is one of the latest creations... basically grilled Chicken Thigh served atop of Japanese Rice and Sweet-Sour sauce. The combination of Japanese Rice and well-grilled Chicken Thigh speaks for itself. The Chicken was good on its own... perfectly tender and juicy; the Japanese Rice was well-executed either. We did not however, enjoy the Sweet-Sour sauce, we thought it was way too sweet to our liking. The 'Sour' factor somehow went missing and it was saccharine sweet to dip the Chicken into the sauce.

With sultry hot tropical weather all year long, it should be no surprise that Penang is swimming with amazing Ice Cream. The endless sweltering heat in Penang means non-stop cravings for a good serving of the icy sweet treat but forget the commercial ersatz brands that offer either Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry Ice Cream. For 4 years (since end of 2013), The Ais has been quietly serving some of the most delicate and healthy artisan Ice Cream in town. Co-founders Jonathan and Lydia's belief in healthy-eating cemented the core principal of The Ais; all products are made with care and low sugar content. The Ais was merely an online business but has since established its brick and mortar outlet in Pulau Tikus earlier (attached with an organic shop). The banana leaf rice set is served in a combination of traditional and modern way. We tried 2 of their cakes - Matcha Cheese (RM 14.90) and Blueberry Cheese Mousse (RM 14.90). These are some great choices we had. The cakes were dense, not too sweet and sleek in terms of texture. Sashimi lovers could go for the Salmon Don... diced fresh Salmon and Avocado served with Japanese Rice, completed with a scoop of Ebiko (Shrimp Roe). The fish was fresh and the Rice was delicately cooked, exactly like what we expected from a bowl of standard Salmon Don

If you have passed by Lebuh McNair recently, chances are high that you have seen this stretch of heritage houses with odd embellishment vying for attention. It does not suggest a thing and some actually though it was a museum-to-be but in actual fact, it comprises of restaurants jointly named as "McNair Restaurants", serving both Peranakan Nyonya cuisine and Western cuisine. Not much signage out the front and the exaggerated decoration outside means nothing but the interior suggests otherwise. Step in the restaurant and you will see traces of the "Nyonya-Peranakan" traits- from the usual Peranakan antique tiles to seemingly priceless heirloom displayed on the wall. Ironically, the menu is not limited to Peranakan cuisine... there are some Western options for those with Western palate either. Prices are reasonable and it isn't a stretch to go for Seafood dishes like Assam Pedas Fish or Assam Prawns. It is also note-worthy that McNair Restaurants are fully air-conditioned and serve family-style servings.

Modernist cuisine or Molecular Gastronomy might not be new to the world but it's definitely something to range over, particularly for Penangites. Innovation is a critical element when it comes to a modernist kitchen- not only that the Chef must change the customary way one would prepare and present the dish but the Chef must bring a change to how diners experience the food either. Adventurous eaters can make their way to the small alley at Nagore Square (where all the bars and small little shops located); A.Maze occupies a strategic corner right next to the vacant land; from outside, the restaurant suggests a nary of information on what it is about to serve, inside... there are only 8 seats arranged snugly facing a small kitchen manned by the Chef-Owner Chef Wei. The very young and talented Chef honed his culinary skills from overseas and had had working experience in Michelin-starred restaurants. A.Maze serves "Omakase" which literally means "leave it to the Chef", the menu is not informed to diners and it relies entirely on "trust" but Chef Wei is not a one-trick pony- diners' sense of taste is not the only thing that changes here... the "Omakse" menu switches once a month and it depends on the seasonal offering. Thanks to Chef Wei, we had the opportunity to join him in his extraordinary gastronomical journey.

Not too sure if it meant to be a hipster spot, Le Cafe does not have a big and clear signage, there's a small one at the side door (smaller than its window) though. It occupies a corner lot at Bricklin Road, a stone's throw distance away from the no-through road of Jalan Tye Kee Yoon and GAMA Supermarket. The interior decor is minimalist with a little industrial finishing, at the end of the cafe is a comfortable space most suitable for hipster-portraiture shots. Le offers a small Toast-focused menu in the mornings and snacks with alcohols for the rest of the days. In the evenings, visitors may opt to chill out at the al-fresco alley right next to the cafe. It may be a fun place to hangout or for a cup of drinks but we thought the food menu was a little less-exciting...

Nevertheless, the fried chicken was falling short of our expectations (smaller chickens and dried meat), and the burger ain't impressive neither. We had their Blue Moon and thought that the concoction was rather refreshing... the sweetness was perfectly balanced as well while the Cheese foam introduced a sleek creaminess and saltiness; the overall flavor-combination was quite good, though I would reconsider if I am willing to pay Rm 18 for that again

The famous Puppy Chocolate Mousse does not come cheap... selling at Rm 30 per piece. It served to us frozen hard so the Mousse had the texture of Ice Cream. It was pretty chocolaty and delicately sweetened. It gets pretty surfeit due to its creamy nature so sharing is wiser. Was it worth it? Only for novelty experience, a hefty piece of Chocolate Mousse is not something you would want to eat on a regular basis.
