The course mellows out to finish in a Tuak Sorbet with Gula Melaka Syrup, Coconut Flakes, and Rose Rice Cake. To get the perfect taste, we were instructed to blend in the ingredients together. It is somehow more flavorful, balanced by a delicate sweetness and texture. All well ends well with a cup of Nutmeg Tea.

Macallum Connoisseurs Coffee Company is a coffee business founded by coffee enthusiasts, combining the twist of modern sense into the local culture, the venue is a roastery, cafe, restaurant and academy - all under one roof. The Char Koay Teow may not look much different from the others, but it was really delicious, fragrantly fried with lots of “wok-hei” flavour! We suspected the use of duck egg made the delectable plate even more fragrant. It didn’t leave a very greasy feel too. Much better than the one we had from an unknown stall in Pulau Tikus the previous day!

oh do you know that the jelly is made in the coconut itself? unlike how we make our konnyaku jelly where we pour the mixture into moulds and let them chill and set. here at Joez Coconut, the coconut (outer husk removed) is first roasted in the oven and then chilled in cooler room. and that’s how the jelly formed from within! ingenius innit? no addictive or artificial chemical is added so the coconut bought must be kept in refrigerator and is best to consume within 3 days.

For wellness enthusiasts or vegans, finding a cafe in Penang offering vegan goodness has become increasingly easy with the opening of several outlets recently. Wholey Wonder Cafe on Jalan Gurdwara in George Town, Penang is a well known vegan cafe. Openings its doors in late 2016, the cafe is delightfully cozy with several styles of seating, including swing seats suspended from the ceiling. The decor is uniquely done up, with Spanish tiles and exposed walls. The cafe is a one-stop shop for all things healthy, with clever combinations of plant-based whole foods and a studio space for yoga upstairs.

The menu is completely plant-based and the dishes are designed to appeal all palates. Options range from Pizza, Pies to home-made pastries; and the prices are well-commensurate with generous serving portion. The first floor is a space dedicated for Yoga classes and ground floor is where cafe located. Wholey Wonder has a nice relaxed atmosphere with vines crawling on the rustic walls, swings in front of the coffee bar and calming-soft background music; the place is not only good for a casual meal but over a cup of Joe as well.

Sae Ma Eul, a longtime Korean barbecue joint (well-established in Klang Valley) expanded to Penang recently and we figured out at least a trio of reasons for that: quality, authenticity and a good selection of not only meat but Korean delights (such as cold noodles, Kimchi stew, Korean Pancake etc) as well. The new Penang branch can be found on 1st floor of Automall (at Karpal Singh Drive) but don't be put off by the location. Though not air-conditioned, it provides an outdoorsy ambiance with good ventilation (sea breeze if you are lucky); exactly like those barbecue joints by the roadside in South Korea. The setting is casual, modern and clean; Sae Ma Eul uses charcoal to fuel and cook the meat but fret not for the divas, the helpful service staff are forever ready to assist. The alcoholics might be glad to know that the Korean BBQ place offers "Hite" Beer and Korean Soju; otherwise, the complementary unlimited refills of water would mercilessly effective at washing away the accumulating heat.

Not too sure if it meant to be a hipster spot, Le Cafe does not have a big and clear signage, there's a small one at the side door (smaller than its window) though. It occupies a corner lot at Bricklin Road, a stone's throw distance away from the no-through road of Jalan Tye Kee Yoon and GAMA Supermarket. The interior decor is minimalist with a little industrial finishing, at the end of the cafe is a comfortable space most suitable for hipster-portraiture shots. Le offers a small Toast-focused menu in the mornings and snacks with alcohols for the rest of the days. In the evenings, visitors may opt to chill out at the al-fresco alley right next to the cafe. It may be a fun place to hangout or for a cup of drinks but we thought the food menu was a little less-exciting...

Classic soup bases like Pig Bone Soup and Tom Yum are available with a few exquisite and innovative offering for the adventurous, worth-mentioning are Milk Cheese Soup, Green Spicy Soup, Spicy Milk Soup etc. Soup bases aside, Tu Go Liang stands out in terms of the variety of steamboat offering; notable highlights include their home-made Yong Tofu, various types of Fish and Meat Balls, vegetables, meat and seafood. AhMa PanMee - George Town 阿嫲刀麻切 Restaurant

38B Lebuh Tye Sin 10300 George Town Malaysia

What differentiates AhMa PanMee from any other Pan Mee you have tasted in town? AhMa PanMee originates from Pahang, where the roots of PanMee come from. Having the recipe passed down from one true Hakka generation to another, you will surely be able to appreciate the authentic taste of AhMa PanMee. One of the best things about AhMa PanMee is definitely the homemade hand cut noodles which is guaranteed to have the best "Q-ness" in town! We offer you a few soup base options, which are match made in heaven with the flavourful toppings. You may ask why AhMa PanMee? We are very proud of our recipe and even better, you will be able to enjoy it in a comfortable environment which will make you feel like home. Your satisfaction is our utmost happiness. Noodles are deeply rooted in our culinary consciousness, there is no one size fits all. There are a lot of varieties on offer and they can come in different size, color, shape, texture as well as flavor. Typically, Pan Mee (a type of Hakka Noodles) is served in the shape of thin, round and smooth texture but Ah Ma Pan Mee, a newly opened Pan Mee specialist at 4th Street Club (Tye Sin Street) decides to do things differently. Using traditional recipe from Pahang, the noodle joint offers Pan Mee in its own style. While the soup bases and condiments are similar, the noodles stand out. They come in irregularly fat-round shape with al-dente (slightly chewy and bouncy) texture. The menu is not big but the air-conditioned restaurant offers a comfortable dining space for hungry diners to have a quick fix; definitely a place where fans of Pan Mee should check out.

If you are tired of the usual franchise cafes around, it's high time that you pay a visit to Cafe Droptop, a Korean-franchise brand that has recently landed on Penang. Cafe Droptop has heavy presence in Korea and in recent years, it has expanded its business operations to other Asian countries. Its first outlet in Penang can be found at Maritime Piazza. Like most franchise brands, Cafe Droptop offers a standard cafe menu with a Korean touch. The menu has a delicious mix of beverages and sweet treat; notable items include Maple Honey Toast, Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice) and Sweet Potato Latte. Prices are on the higher side but the modern-chic atmosphere is comfortable and cozy, definitely a place where you can spend some leisure time with your friends or family.

Le Harlequin Restaurant

29C-01-19, Maritime Persiaran Karpal Singh 11600 Georgetown Penang

With a name like Le Harlequin Cafe one would expect the place to serve up Coffee or Cakes but in actual fact it brings stir-fried Seafood to the table.

  • kenhuntfood.com
  • 2018-04-16 00:00:00+00:00
Harlequin Combo and Crab Combo are both the most-ordered meals here. The former one comes with a concoction of Clams, Mussels, Yabbies, Prawns, Sausages and Corns while the latter choice has Crabs, Sausages and Corns. Both were dressed in a spicy, sweet-savory sauce. Both possessed strong smokiness; the flavor-combo was attractive at first but we thought it was too monotonous towards the end. The boldly seasoned Seafood was too hefty on the palate. Seafood was fresh and the fact that Mud Crabs with Roe were served, we thought the prices were well-justified. Good for novelty experience but not the type of food that I would want to eat on a regular basis.

Affordably priced at Rm 19.90 for a basic set (serves 2), budget watchers can now enjoy delicious Thai Steamboat at unbeatable price, well-complemented with sea breeze. The simple set includes some basic meat balls, greens and meat but those with a deeper pocket can always top up extra few dollars for the additional spread. Bangkok Garden BBQ is not air-conditioned and instead, it relies on the sea breeze so the best time to visit would probably in the evening. The serving portion is not that great but it would be perfectly fine to be served as supper in lieu of a proper meal. Bangkok Garden BBQ can be found right next to Sae Ma Eul Korean BBQ Restaurant.

If you have passed by Lebuh McNair recently, chances are high that you have seen this stretch of heritage houses with odd embellishment vying for attention. It does not suggest a thing and some actually though it was a museum-to-be but in actual fact, it comprises of restaurants jointly named as "McNair Restaurants", serving both Peranakan Nyonya cuisine and Western cuisine. Not much signage out the front and the exaggerated decoration outside means nothing but the interior suggests otherwise. Step in the restaurant and you will see traces of the "Nyonya-Peranakan" traits- from the usual Peranakan antique tiles to seemingly priceless heirloom displayed on the wall. Ironically, the menu is not limited to Peranakan cuisine... there are some Western options for those with Western palate either. Prices are reasonable and it isn't a stretch to go for Seafood dishes like Assam Pedas Fish or Assam Prawns. It is also note-worthy that McNair Restaurants are fully air-conditioned and serve family-style servings.

Consider yourself incredibly lucky if you are a fan of Sze Chuan food, more options for you right now with the opening of Hero Pot at Karpal Singh Drive. Belongs to the "Mix", a convenient store that sells fancy imported goods from China, Japan, Korea etc, Hero Pot offers Sze Chuan-influenced dishes and of course... Sze Chuan "Mala" Hot Pot. But everything is designed to be ostentatious here, when you are about to enter the premise, you will be greeted by servers wearing traditional Chinese outfit. They will bring you to your table and before you are seated, they will shout "heroes are coming"... an awkward start to a meal. The menu is Hot Pot-centric, with a few classic Chinese snacks. Central Georgetown is a real food hub with no shortages of International cuisine... and that includes Vietnamese food. The name Pho Viet certainly rings a bell... and we were right, their specialty- Vietnamese Pho. The place was previously known as Yellow Lips (at Beach Street) but has since taken over by a new Vietnamese team that offers a variety of Vietnamese delicacies. Prices are on the higher side (20-30% higher than other Vietnamese joints in town) but they have certainly delivered the quality; service was impeccable as well. Not only did they offer complimentary dessert but they try to explain every dish in great details (they politely advised me on the correct way of eating Vietnamese Pho). If price is not your concern, do give this place a try.

We had Jungle Bird and the De La Cinnamon; both were unique and special in its own ways. The former choice was served with candied Lemon slice, sweetened Pineapple and a stalk of Pandan leaf; the entire combination was refreshing and light on the palate, with a hint of bitter-sensation but with the addition of candied Lemon and juicy Pineapple, the flavor-combination was complex and multi-dimensional. The latter choice was sweeter though we agree that the Whisky flavor was softened but the Kahlua was no where to be discerned, the torched Cinnamon stick acted like a cleanser to clear the senses and prepared us for another sip.

The Chicken Teriyaki was fine but if and only if you prefer the crisp version, the meat was on the tougher side.

The name "Moody Cow Cafe" is widely known amongst dessert lovers in Penang, for serving some of the best yet innovative Cheese Cakes in town (Salted Egg Cheese Cake/ Cempedak Cheese Cake are some of its signature products); the brand is also notoriously known to serve some of the most expensive Cheese Cakes in Penang. But the Cheese Cake specialist has recently ventured out of its norm... opening a new cafe- "Sweet Monster Cafe" at 4th Street Club of Tye Sin Street. From the most expensive Cheese Cake in town to.... potentially the most expensive Pie in town (from Rm 30 per piece); from "Cow" to... "Monster"; the only thing unchanged is their willingness to innovate and to come with new flavors and combination. The cafe offers a small Pasta menu with an array of home-made Pies and Cookies... with most of them come with hefty price tags. The exterior of Sweet Monster Cafe does not give a single hint on what the place would serve, once you are inside, you will find the classical visual arts and decorative of ancient European... with soft background music that we would not know how to appreciate. Nevermind on the ambiance, their Pies truly standout on their own...

The salad was over seasoned with salts and Spicy Napolitana was average. Nevertheless, the cafe owner took our feedback promptly and we felt it was alright, since they are a pet cafe and not a food cafe.

A cafe made just for dog lovers, White Paws Mansion is a space dedicated entirely for canine lovers to cuddle and play with human's best friend. This is the perfect destination if you wish to be surrounded by furkids and enjoy a decent meal at the same time. White Paws Mansion has quite a number of dogs, while most of them bring Huskies, there are quite a few other breeds too. The very enthusiast and human-friendly canines are eager to meet new faces so as soon you push the door open, you will be greeted with their curious, lovable faces. The kitchen is not fully ready for now, so the variety on offer is small but I guess this is not really the place for indulgence, more like a space where you can mingle with the dogs.

他们的TomYam和酸辣汤我们一直大推,因为酸辣部分很够劲,搭配新鲜的石斑鱼肉或者炸鱼,吃完了还会令人有意犹未尽感觉

We were definitely pleased to see the aesthetically presented Hiyamugi Pasta... cold Noodles served with Ebiko, thinly sliced Beetroot, Deep Fried Garlic flakes and Sesame dip. Though simple, it was most refreshing; as though we were having Salad... the Sesame dip was nicely done... not too creamy nor heavy to go with the Noodles

Truffled Wagyu Donburi (RM 35) is definitely an extravaganza to be indulged. The dish is simple, featuring Japanese rice, medium rare beef and tamago with truffle oil. Medium rare beef is well executed and did offer a refreshing feeling if compared to regular beef we used to have elsewhere. Nevertheless, we felt the rice texture could have been slightly solid to improve the overall taste as it was too moist for our liking. Perhaps we poked the egg yolk and the liquid caused the rice to absorb partial of it.

The beauty of Injeolmi Bingsu is its simplicity... milk flavored shaved Ice topped with Mung Bean Flour, Mochi, Nuts and evaporated Milk. The shaved Ice was fine, soft and milky-sweet but the sweetness was of comfortable level, it was subtle and not saccharine sweet. The evaporated Milk increased the smoothness and milkiness of the sweet treat; overall, we thought it was quite delicious
