Dominating the skyline of Köln (a.k.a. Cologne in English) in Germany, the Köln Cathedral is one of the few structures that remained standing after the vast majority of the town was flattened by aerial bombs during World War II. Given its status as Germany’s largest Gothic church, designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and being a long-held important stop on the Roman Catholic pilgrimage route, it is not surprising that Köln Cathedral is the most visited landmark in all of Germany. We’ll share all the basic information you need to visit the Köln Cathedral as well as our own experience on our own stop to this magnificent church.

Cologne, German Köln, is the fourth biggest city in Germany (after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich). It's located in the Northwestern part of the country, between Bonn, the former capital of West Germany and Düsseldorf, the capital of North-Rhine Westphalia, the same Bundesland, where Cologne is home.

We were heading back today from our Christmas vacation to Sölden, Austria (yeah yeah life is rough) and decided to stop by Neuschwanstein since it was on the way (again, life is rough). Neuschwanstein castle has a funny name, but you know it once you see it. It's quite possibly the most famous castle in all the world. Walt Disney modeled the Cinderella castle after Neuschwanstein and with good reason, it's very beautiful and the setting is both dramatic and magical. Even in the winter time it's just as pretty to visit, not only for the castle but also for the views overlooking the valley below and beyond.

As we inched closer to the Neuschwanstein Castle, I couldn't help but think it looked even more fairy tale'esque thanks to the autumnal hues Mother Nature had dressed it in. Rich yellow, copper and crimson leaves framed the world-famous castle on the craggy rocks, contrasting sharply with the lime green fields below it. In…

The Cathedral of Siena has a spectacle that's normally kept out of sight, even though you’re walking all over it—its inlaid marble mosaic floor. And for a short time in the late summer and early fall, it's uncovered and open for viewing.

People usually visit Colosseum + Roman Forum/Palatine Hill together. Roman Forum/Palatine Hill is a vast area of Roman ruins (plenty of walking) with plenty to see even for a non-history buff. It's easily accessible within the city, taking the Metro stopping at Colosseo. We bought out ticket at the Palatine Hill entrance, as the Colosseum entrance is too crowded.
