More and more China Chinese Steamboat/ Hot Pot restaurants sprung up in Penang recently, Chuan Style Steamboat occupies a prominent spot at Bagan Jermal (T-junction of Mount Erskine and Burmah Road). The restaurant has huge posters on "Sze Chuan Face-Changing Opera" (变脸) and it does not take long for one to figure out what type of cuisine they are serving. The selections here are huge, ranging from the classic Sze Chuan Spicy Hot Pot to some uncommon Soups as well as some familiar Sze Chuan dishes. But most diners are here for its Hot Pot; the price points are however, not as wallet-friendly as budget-watchers would have hoped. A standard meal here is easily more than Rm 50 per pax so the place is more for occasions in lieu of regular meals.

Overall, the taste of the wan tan mee was unique and the deep fried wan tan tasted crunchy and delicious. The price of the food here was considered reasonable too as the noodle portion and wontons were larger than usual . The drawback is the additional charge of clear soup which is usually complementary in other stalls. It is also not easy to find parking nearby as the road is a main road and parking is not allowed.

Potentially one of the most expensive Wan Ton Mees in Penang, Wan Ton Mee House's comes with a splash of own-developed Egg-gravy to be mixed and eaten with the noodles. On top of that, Wan Ton Mee House's rendition of Wan Ton Mee sees a serving of addictive Pork Lards, crispy Deep Fried Wan Ton/ Dumplings, dressed in a luscious gravy. The texture of the noodles was alright, but they could be more generous with the Chilies. Sambal will only be given upon request, which is a nuisance for chili-lovers like us. All in all, we thought the noodles were of decent-quality; definitely not something that we would want to go all out for it but neither do we against it.

坦白说,我每次都不是冲着松花江餐室的肉骨茶而来的。虽然它没有太重药材味,反以注重肉骨的清香自成一格。从慕名它的肉骨茶,试吃之后,却反而深深爱上了它的另一招牌菜~清蒸龙胆河粉。龙胆鱼又称龙胆石斑,像这类大型海鱼如果用来清蒸,首要条件是鱼要绝对新鲜,其次考的是厨师火候拿捏功夫。两者缺一,嚼在咀里肯定变成一团咬死不烂的口胶糖。还有它们的苦瓜抄蛋也是我甚为欣赏的。简简单单的一道菜,蛋却可以抄得如此嫩滑,可惜这次因苦瓜缺货而错过了。

An exceptionally popular and fairly casual noodle-specialist hailed from central Malaysia has recently expanded its business operations to Penand and has finally swung opened its doors to the public. Go Noodle House's first Penang branch is strategically located in Gurney Plaza (7th floor/ opposite to SenQ). Beelines of long queues have been spotted for the past few days. The brand has gained strong reputation in terms of quality and wallet-friendly price tags. Go Noodle House is also famed for its signature clear-soup noodles, finished with Chinese Wine. The no-frills restaurant offers a simple home-styled cooking menu that features two types of noodle dishes- Clear Soup and Pan Mee (available from Rm 9.90). We were certainly impressed with the food quality, but we thought their service level could be further improved (or perhaps, the restaurant is still new and the staff lacked of experience and training).

We had a Crispy Aromatic Duck with Pancakes (Half Chicken, RM 44.80). The portion best to be shared among 2-4 people, and the service crew will help to cut the duck into small pieces upon serving the plate to your table. Cucumber slices and pancake wrap are provided. The taste of the duck is absolutely flavorful. Seasoning is nice, and the roasting give it a gleamingly crispy skin and juicy meat. Conventionally, duck has a strong odour but this type of unpleasant smell is totally absent. When we have it with the wrapped skin with cucumber slices and sauces, the flavour of the duck is slightly tuned down to a moderate but it does have more texture and layering though. Personally, we preferred to have the duck by adding some sauces without addition of the wrap, and there comes the thorough enjoyment of the duck meat. Absolutely delicious!

The Roast Meat with Noodles and Wan Ton Noodles on the other hand, were delicious.... springy noodles served with luscious barbecued Meat; a combination that speaks for itself. The Soy sauce was sweet and delectable while the meat was juicy-tender. The Dumplings were not shabby either; each completed with a huge piece of Shrimp in it.

Being a steamboat-obsessed community, Penangites welcome all sorts of steamboat or hotpots; evidently seen from the forever-increasing steamboat restaurants in town. Red Stone Hotpot is one of the new members that pays homage to the tongue-numbing Sze Chuan hotpot but their concept of serving Hotpot is unusual and distinctive. Unlike its competitors, Red Stove does not serve the soup/ food as it is; instead, the Chef cooks in front of you... from scratch. Dining here is like being at a cook show. The Chef prepares the ingredients and starts the cooking process in front of the diners... from cooking until seasoning, diners get to witness the entire process. Commendable is the use of effective tools to shield the oil from spilling over to diners. The flavors are good but not mind-blowingly amazing but it is definitely a fun place to visit for the novelty experience.

Mama Kim's signature Sauna Mee did not disappoint. A pot of goodies served with in a scorching hot pot, the broth is then poured over it... allowing it to heat up and to bring it to a boil. The broth was lightly seasoned with discernible sweetness from vegetables, everything felt so light and easy on the palate. For those who prefer a spicy punch, try their home-made Chili paste.

Bak Kut Teh turned out to be a delightful surprise. Flavorful and rated as good for someone who rarely fancy vegetable soup and brown rice. It is a creative dish when Idealite's chef introduced buckwheat noodles in this Tomyum soup. Yes, I picked buckwheat and this is more commonly known as 'Soba' on Japanese menu. Despite its name, buckwheat is unlike wheat, it is gluten free!

Penang has seen a significant increase of China Chinese restaurants in recent years and Wei Fang Bao Zi (味坊包子) at Mount Erskine is one of the latest additions. The place is manned by a China Chinese couple with thick Chinese accent; the menu features a vast variety of northern China Chinese delights- from Steamed Bao (Bun), home-made Dumplings to Noodles and some uncommonly seen starters.... with incredibly affordable prices. The place has limited servers so do not expect the orders will be served fast. While we were amazed with the selection and competitive price points, we found the food was a little greasy to our liking and the taste might be too exquisite for us. The eatery is housed in a semi detached house along Mount Erskine, next to Jung Won Korean Restaurant.

Gourmands residing in the neighborhood of Tanjung Bungah will not be new to the name- Hai Wei Seafood Restaurant. The well-established Chinese restaurant was previously housed under a low-cost flat in the vicinity but has since moved to Precinct 10. The place is known to churn out some of the best Claypot Crab Rice and Seafood dishes. The new place at Precinct 10 is huge and could easily accommodate more than 25 tables (a mix of big and small ones). The menu is pretty huge, with familiar Chinese stir-fry dishes suitable for both budget-watchers or those with deep-pockets. Though regular patrons would like to re-visit their favorite restaurant but the lackluster service tells them otherwise. The serving speed on our visit was extremely slow and many could not wait for their turn and eventually left. Fortunately, the food quality did manage to compromise the dissatisfaction....

A new kid on the block, Colonial Kitchen Hainanese Cuisine is one of the latest eateries at Pulau Tikus (opposite Wisma Perkeso). The place serves an unassuming and unabashed Hainanese menu with some classic highlights such as Hainanese Pies, Chicken Chop and Pork Chop etc. It has been receiving positive remarks since its opening. Colonial Kitchen has a simple interior decor, not unnecessary frills but some basic tables and chairs (not even air-conditioner) but this does not stop gourmands from visiting the place; those who are in the know are particularly contented with their home-made Pies. Yang Jia North East Chinese Cuisine at Pulau Tikus is a long-established Chinese restaurant in Penang. We've been passing the place for many times and have no clue about the seemingly curious restaurant could offer. The exterior is convincing but it does not give any idea on what types of food they are serving. Push the doors open and you will find the restaurant in standard Chinese setting but what surprised us was the bible-thick menu... that basically offers everything from appetizers, mains, hot pot, dumplings and sweet treats. Dong Bei, literally means North East... refers to the geographical region in China, simmering stews and dumplings are some of the local delicacies. Similarly, one could expect to see some of these Dong Bei-influenced dishes in Yang Jia North East Chinese Cuisine.

Staple for the working class heroes- Economy Rice has just got an upgrade here at Yu Shi Tang. Presentation is top notch... food does look more delicious with better presentation no? The offering here looks homey but the prices are very friendly to the wallet. From Rm 7.90 and above, diners are assured of a tummy-filling meal with at least two types of rice dishes. Despite of the discounted price, the comfort-level of the dining hall is not compromised. The place is clean and fully air-conditioned with tables well-spaced to ensure comfort. Food quality's slightly above average but not marvelous for us to go all out for them. Yu Shi Tang is housed in the same building as Burmahtel at Burmah Road, Pulau Tikus.
