Small bowl at RM 3.80 is really a good bargain. Filled with classic ingredients such as chicken feet, pig skin, pig intestine, herbal egg, special home blend garlic vinegar sauce and also chili paste. Love the starchy soup base with a bit of saltiness and sweetness to my liking as the amount of vinegar garlic is just nice and could be better if slightly stronger.

The gravy is definitely the one that makes Kim Leng loh mee unique. The thick gravy is flavourful and gives a bit hint of sweetness. It is very inviting. Next, KayaButter love its braised eggs, very well marinated. You can add extra ingredients as you like such as the chicken legs, braised eggs, meats and internal organs. Internal organs are not KayaButter’s favourite, so we ask them to exclude that in our loh mee. Oh ya, the loh mee also comes with pork’s skin.

Private Kitchen is gaining its popularity in Penang, especially when you want to cut the mainstream restaurants or over-rated franchised brands out there and proceed straight to the basic, traditional flavors; or merely satisfy the particular urge to have some classic home-cooked dishes. While Great Delight Kitchen (悦为食) may operate like an ordinary restaurant, it actually runs on a business model like Private Kitchen. Customization of menu can be arranged with prior notice- simply inform the proprietor on the budget and they are able to customize the menu accordingly. The server proudly shared with us that the existing Teo Chew-influenced menu only covers 5% of what the restaurant could actually offer; as long as you can name it, they can cook it. Tables are limited and with its strong customer base, it is highly recommended that you make advance booking before visiting the place (we visited 3 times without booking and were turned down). The damage for this meal was slightly over RM 100 (for 3 pax), not exactly a cheap meal but we were pleased with the quality.

There are a few types of soup based to choose from, ranging from the non-spicy authentic chicken pot to the fiery hot Si Chuan Spicy Chicken Pot(Half Chicken). Though initially the price tag (RM 68) may give you a surprise but it is worth the value - it comes with half free-range chicken. Even though smaller in size, the free-range chicken meat was so tender and it absorbed the essence from the soup, giving a great level of satisfaction. As a matter of fact, the best way to enjoy the steamboat is to have the chicken first before adding in other ingredients, as this will ensure you savour the most original taste of the soup.

If you think Hot Pot would be heaty, greasy and full with Monosodium-Glutamate (MSG), you need to pay a visit to Flavor Food. The modest and rather invisible Hot Pot restaurant is a new addition to Pulau Tikus, well-tucked in one of the shop houses on the bustling Burmah Road (right next to Union Primary School). Flavor Food believes in extracting the natural wholesomeness of the ingredients and bold seasonings will not be seen here. Most ingredients are home-made and they are not a big supporter over processed food either. The fully air-conditioned restaurant has a chic but cozy atmosphere, most suitable for family occasion or casual dining. The observant would notice their sleek stone pot, specially designed to suit the theme. A Hot Pot restaurant with heavy Cantonese-roots it seems; but as far as quality and service are concerned, I'd definitely love to revisit.

The Hot Pot specialist is well-known for those in the know, rumor says that the Chef originates from the same kitchen as Yi Bing Qing Fish Head Steamboat (at Nagore Road). Chuan Yee serves the communal broth in milky white hue, with the Deep Fried Fish (Head) served separately. Sets are pre-fixed but those with big appetite can always have the extra orders. Prices may seem on the higher side but they commensurate with large serving portion. The demand is high here so making advance reservation may be a wise choice. Sabah Tomyam (RM 14.90) with fried fish. We are not sure whether this is the real version of Sabah Tomyam or not, as my few years experience in Sabah tells me otherwise. However, setting aside the arguement, the tomyam is great in taste, having a little bit milky taste with a mild spiciness. What we appreciate is the fried fish is served separately from the tomyam soup to prevent it become soggy after being "flooded" with the soup. An excellent choice for a chill night. You may choose the preferred type of noodles for the tomyam.

We had their Signature Chicken Claypot steamboat, a big whole pot of chicken packed with shallots, and gingers. Besides the continuous heat supplied to the pot, the gingers had warmed us so much that we basically sweat like shower. The soup was rich and nicely seasoned, but it is much suitable for those prefer bolder flavours. However, their service was great by constantly dropping by to check and top up the soup. We wishes the chicken could be much meaty, but equal proportionate of the green versus the chicken is an added point.
