We waited for almost 45 minutes for the Waffles. The edges were nicely done with an addictive crisp but the inner part was a tad too dry to our liking. We also did not like the drizzle of seemingly ersatz Chocolate sauce over the Waffles.

Here comes the champion! Soft, warm brownies topped with homemade salted duck egg ice-cream, caramelized bananas and drizzled with caramel sauce. At first I thought the ice-cream would taste funny but it was THE BOMB! They serve set lunch ranges from RM14.50 to RM20.90, inclusive of soup of the day, main course and beverage. Absolutely worth it!

Here comes their signature ice cream for dessert! Salted duck egg ice cream. Yes, you saw that correctly - it is salted egg ice cream with actual salted duck egg bits! Ice cream is special indeed but I doubt it would not be everyone's preference especially when one is expecting the taste of a real sweet dessert.

oh do you know that the jelly is made in the coconut itself? unlike how we make our konnyaku jelly where we pour the mixture into moulds and let them chill and set. here at Joez Coconut, the coconut (outer husk removed) is first roasted in the oven and then chilled in cooler room. and that’s how the jelly formed from within! ingenius innit? no addictive or artificial chemical is added so the coconut bought must be kept in refrigerator and is best to consume within 3 days.

We ought to give the special among the special a try, thus we ordered a Ice Kacang Special at the premium price of RM 6. The regular ice kacang is topped with 3 fruits of the day, and one of the ice cream available (if we recall correctly, it would be either peanut or vanilla). Overall the combination worked well, not overly sweet, and shaved ice was smooth and not exhibiting the ice crystals that will cause displeasure to the tongue.

beautifully coated with Sesame and Peanut Sugar. Each order requires a minimum wait of 15 minutes. We expected the taste would be quite similar to Muar Chee (local delicacy) but it was not quite the case. Of all the varieties of dessert here, QQ Mochi Ice (RM 8.90) is unique and impressed us. It has mochi and black sesame topping a bowl of shaved ice. Though the overall combination sounds odd but it actually worked well. Elements of sweet and salty were combined altogether when you had the black sesame and peanut sesame together, and the shaved ice gave a cooling sensation overall.

Naming a cafe may not be as exhausting as one would expect but it does require a little artistic flair. One of the latest cafe joints in Penang- Sugar On Top dropped the cliches and decided to pick up something unusual- SOT. Perhaps a pun intended, it sure rings a bell on what the cafe could potentially offer. During its soft-opening period, Sugar On Top only serves desserts but right now, the full-fledged menu consisting Pasta, Burgers, All-Day Breakfast and special in-house delights. The price points are however, slightly higher than average. Sugar On Top is now taking over the previous lot of Haven Harbor, at Chime Heritage.

Order the Big Breakfast for RM22. With the generous portion size of the dish, it is recommended to go for the sharing-style-eating. If you still prefer the presence of rice in your main meals, then Farmer's Favourite (RM 17) is a worthy consideration. It is served using brown rice, and the chef has done a tremendous great work on the grilled chicken breast as the texture was moist and tender, contrary to the expectations we had. The sprinkles of parsley and paprika spices also further elevate the taste of entire plate of dish.

Just Moist is a dish dedicated for meat lovers, particularly steak lovers. The dish consists of a perfectly seared Rib Eye, served over a bed of mashed Sweet Potatoes, sauteed Shitake Mushrooms, blanched Broccoli and Cherry Tomatoes. The Steak was perfectly cooked... tender to the bite and carefully seasoned to the dot. Our only complain was the measly serving portion (can't help with a mere Rm 25)

The Mermaid's Signature Stingray has bold flavors and might be a little overly bold on its own but perfectly well over a spoon of Rice. The edges were carefully grilled to a crisp while the inner flesh remains its moist. Any order with the Signature Stingray will be served with a portion of the quintessential refreshing Chili dip. It was good but we were not blown away. For a Western-twist, we had Grouper Steak with Home-made Pesto Sauce and it was served with Mashed Potato and Corn Niblets. The thickly cut Fish possessed the most satisfying meaty-bite but the Pesto Sauce was a little too heavy on the seasoning... it would be better if they could reduce the salinity. If you are neither a fan of the old-school Sambal sauce nor the vegetal Pesto, you may opt for Garlic Butter... which will be served with Wedges and Salad.

Chicken is easily one of the most common dishes in most restaurants but good chicken leaves deep impression to diners, especially when it hits all the right notes. Chicken lovers would be glad to be introduced to Ember Roast, a new wood-fire Roast Chicken specialist in town. It's inappropriate to call them rotisserie as they technically... only roast Chicken and Fish. The famous Puppy Chocolate Mousse does not come cheap... selling at Rm 30 per piece. It served to us frozen hard so the Mousse had the texture of Ice Cream. It was pretty chocolaty and delicately sweetened. It gets pretty surfeit due to its creamy nature so sharing is wiser. Was it worth it? Only for novelty experience, a hefty piece of Chocolate Mousse is not something you would want to eat on a regular basis.

Miscela by Woosh Coffee is one of a kind cafe, the location for both Miscela and Woosh Coffee has been weird.... Miscela is housed in one of the property showrooms at Jelutong (Aspen Beacon Concept Gallery) while Woosh Coffee can be found in a Penang college (INTI International College Penang). But the setting of Miscela is somewhat impressive (probably part of the showroom), the place is clinically clean with bright setting and surrounded by colorful LED displays. Customers whom are keen on the properties are often invited to the tables for sales-talk, the atmosphere is designed for business meetings over coffee. Miscela does offer a small menu with main and they take that seriously. Though the place does not have complete kitchen setting, it manages the food well (at least we did not feel shortchange). Aspen Beacon Concept Gallery is located at Sungai Pinang, right next to the Japanese School.

Step in the cafe and you will be pleasantly amazed by how cozy the place is. While every effort was made to ensure the place lives up to the classy Italian theme but we did not think the Italian element was strong enough. In fact, we spotted a wallpaper with Chinese characters. On the menu, it offers quite a wide variety of Italian fare, ranging from Antipasto, Pizza, Pasta, Grills and even classic Italian desserts. A Maze, the brain child of Chef Wei, is a rather small restaurant, sitting only 8 pax per night, however this allows for a rather intimate affair as you will be seated Chef side as he guides you along course by course. Located in the heart of George Town, Penang. Serving Alternative Cuisine Chef Wei draws inspiration from the vibrant backdrop of the island he resides in, from it’s rich heritage and culture to the interesting produces that are found in and around this area, working with the seasons, a new course of meal is served every month. Pulling apart, reconstituting, reinterpreting, reinventing and innovating, A Maze’s ambitions are to break expectations, challenge conventions and leave you lost in wonderment on a culinary experience. There are no menus and no ordering here, we ask that you bring an open mind and an appetite, and allow Chef Wei to bring you on a journey a spoonful at a time.

Modernist cuisine or Molecular Gastronomy might not be new to the world but it's definitely something to range over, particularly for Penangites. Innovation is a critical element when it comes to a modernist kitchen- not only that the Chef must change the customary way one would prepare and present the dish but the Chef must bring a change to how diners experience the food either. Adventurous eaters can make their way to the small alley at Nagore Square (where all the bars and small little shops located); A.Maze occupies a strategic corner right next to the vacant land; from outside, the restaurant suggests a nary of information on what it is about to serve, inside... there are only 8 seats arranged snugly facing a small kitchen manned by the Chef-Owner Chef Wei. The very young and talented Chef honed his culinary skills from overseas and had had working experience in Michelin-starred restaurants. A.Maze serves "Omakase" which literally means "leave it to the Chef", the menu is not informed to diners and it relies entirely on "trust" but Chef Wei is not a one-trick pony- diners' sense of taste is not the only thing that changes here... the "Omakse" menu switches once a month and it depends on the seasonal offering. Thanks to Chef Wei, we had the opportunity to join him in his extraordinary gastronomical journey.
