We picked Nasi Kerabu, which is Li Er own invention variant of Nasi Kerabu with blue pea rice that topped with shredded fried chicken, lettuce and great combination of sambal. Overall flavour of the meal is refreshing, and we particularly enjoyed the fluffy rice coupled with the crisp lettuce, then a little spiciness from the sambal heighten the taste even more.

Many would pass by Li Er Cafe without noticing its presence, it has got to be one of the low-key cafes in town. The name has been established for quite a few years and has since garnered an appreciate following. Most regular patrons are back for their Nyonya Kuih, particularly their catering service that offers outstanding presentation. They are able to customize your orders based on the number of diners and it goes as low as a few pax. While they are known for the Nyonya Kuih, their daily offering is not to be forsaken as well; the daily specials include traditional-dishes with a modern touch. Notable highlights include Nasi Kerabu, Tom Yum Bee Hoon, Nasi Lemak Special, Nasi Kunyit, Jawa Mee etc.... at unbeatable prices. Though not everything is praise-worthy, the effort in plating and presentation is applaudible. Li Er Cafe is housed in one of the shop houses along Jalan Burmah, facing the junction to Bangkok Lane.

We ought to give the special among the special a try, thus we ordered a Ice Kacang Special at the premium price of RM 6. The regular ice kacang is topped with 3 fruits of the day, and one of the ice cream available (if we recall correctly, it would be either peanut or vanilla). Overall the combination worked well, not overly sweet, and shaved ice was smooth and not exhibiting the ice crystals that will cause displeasure to the tongue.

Order the Big Breakfast for RM22. With the generous portion size of the dish, it is recommended to go for the sharing-style-eating. The dish combines broccoli hash brown, fried egg, chicken patties, grilled mushrooms, avocado and tomato with pieces of sourdough. For spice, sprinkle in some crushed black pepper.

If you still prefer the presence of rice in your main meals, then Farmer's Favourite (RM 17) is a worthy consideration. It is served using brown rice, and the chef has done a tremendous great work on the grilled chicken breast as the texture was moist and tender, contrary to the expectations we had. The sprinkles of parsley and paprika spices also further elevate the taste of entire plate of dish.

Just Moist is a dish dedicated for meat lovers, particularly steak lovers. The dish consists of a perfectly seared Rib Eye, served over a bed of mashed Sweet Potatoes, sauteed Shitake Mushrooms, blanched Broccoli and Cherry Tomatoes. The Steak was perfectly cooked... tender to the bite and carefully seasoned to the dot. Our only complain was the measly serving portion (can't help with a mere Rm 25)

With sultry hot tropical weather all year long, it should be no surprise that Penang is swimming with amazing Ice Cream. The endless sweltering heat in Penang means non-stop cravings for a good serving of the icy sweet treat but forget the commercial ersatz brands that offer either Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry Ice Cream. For 4 years (since end of 2013), The Ais has been quietly serving some of the most delicate and healthy artisan Ice Cream in town. Co-founders Jonathan and Lydia's belief in healthy-eating cemented the core principal of The Ais; all products are made with care and low sugar content. The Ais was merely an online business but has since established its brick and mortar outlet in Pulau Tikus earlier (attached with an organic shop). In March 2017, It has now moved into a new location at Chulia Street and offering more options to its patrons. With more than 40 flavors available (not your usual boring flavors), there will be at least 3 alcohol-based Ice Cream and 16 types of Ice Cream on offer at all times (on rotation basis- you might not get some flavors on certain days); for those who concern, Vegan Ice Cream is also available.

Tang Xiao Ya's signature Roasted Duck was served to us warm, right from the oven. The skin did not possess the very much anticipated crispiness; it was the soft but greasy type. Underneath the Duck was a pool of juice. The meat was extremely tender with a burst of meat juice... it was delicately seasoned with a discernible presence of five-spice powder. The Duck was good on its own but even better with the home-made, tangy Garlic-Chili sauce

Not too sure if it meant to be a hipster spot, Le Cafe does not have a big and clear signage, there's a small one at the side door (smaller than its window) though. It occupies a corner lot at Bricklin Road, a stone's throw distance away from the no-through road of Jalan Tye Kee Yoon and GAMA Supermarket. The interior decor is minimalist with a little industrial finishing, at the end of the cafe is a comfortable space most suitable for hipster-portraiture shots. Le offers a small Toast-focused menu in the mornings and snacks with alcohols for the rest of the days. In the evenings, visitors may opt to chill out at the al-fresco alley right next to the cafe. It may be a fun place to hangout or for a cup of drinks but we thought the food menu was a little less-exciting...

One of the latest cafe joints in Penang- Sugar On Top dropped the cliches and decided to pick up something unusual- SOT. There is no better time to enjoy a good magical frozen dessert in a place like Malaysia with summer lasts all year long. Penang has no shortage of good desserts but we sure would not mind a new addition to the Penang cafe-dessert scene. The Craftisan is a new kid on the block and has just had its grand opening in early July 2017. Housed on the first floor of Soul Cafe, The Craftisan is an Ice Cream parlor that focuses on Gelato-inspired sweet treats. It gets points for the inspired creativity- for infusing Tea into their Ice Cream. The selection is full of Asian-leaning flavors- from refreshingly light Jasmine, Matcha to bolder ones like Tie Kuan Yin (Chinese Oolong Tea) and occasionally exotic delights like Durian Ice Cream. The cafe is brilliantly spaced and brightly lit, with clean and comfortable couches forming the homey-intimate atmosphere. It is a place best to chill out with friends over some sweet treats (if you do not mind the slightly higher price points).

On the mains, we had both Pan Seared Norwegian Salmon and Australian Grain Fed Beef Tenderloin; the former one was safe choice with pretty simple and straight-forward flavors, the latter option on the other hand, was beyond amazing. It probably outshined the Salmon, the Tenderloin was melt-in-the-mouth tender. The red meat was carefully cooked to the right doneness with spot-on seasoning and a burst of delightful meat juice. This is definitely one of the best Beef around.

The server introduced their Famous Laksa Cik Umi with aplomb so we decided to try it out. The serving was large and the soup was pretty thick (thicker than the usual Assam Laksa). But it had all the essential columns ticked- sour, savory, spicy and a hint of sweetness (from the Shrimp paste). The condiments were spot on either but if I had to comment, it would be the texture of the noodles... which I thought they could be a little springier. Equally delectable was the Nasi Kacang, a serving of oiled Rice with 2 types of curries. Amazing flavors but we were not over-whelmed by the dish.

Step in the cafe and you will be pleasantly amazed by how cozy the place is. While every effort was made to ensure the place lives up to the classy Italian theme but we did not think the Italian element was strong enough. In fact, we spotted a wallpaper with Chinese characters. On the menu, it offers quite a wide variety of Italian fare, ranging from Antipasto, Pizza, Pasta, Grills and even classic Italian desserts. Very wallet-friendly price points but as far as authenticity is concerned, we thought the flavors have been localized to suit the local audience.

A Maze, the brain child of Chef Wei, is a rather small restaurant, sitting only 8 pax per night, however this allows for a rather intimate affair as you will be seated Chef side as he guides you along course by course. Located in the heart of George Town, Penang. Serving Alternative Cuisine Chef Wei draws inspiration from the vibrant backdrop of the island he resides in, from it’s rich heritage and culture to the interesting produces that are found in and around this area, working with the seasons, a new course of meal is served every month. Pulling apart, reconstituting, reinterpreting, reinventing and innovating, A Maze’s ambitions are to break expectations, challenge conventions and leave you lost in wonderment on a culinary experience. There are no menus and no ordering here, we ask that you bring an open mind and an appetite, and allow Chef Wei to bring you on a journey a spoonful at a time.

Modernist cuisine or Molecular Gastronomy might not be new to the world but it's definitely something to range over, particularly for Penangites. Innovation is a critical element when it comes to a modernist kitchen- not only that the Chef must change the customary way one would prepare and present the dish but the Chef must bring a change to how diners experience the food either. Adventurous eaters can make their way to the small alley at Nagore Square (where all the bars and small little shops located); A.Maze occupies a strategic corner right next to the vacant land; from outside, the restaurant suggests a nary of information on what it is about to serve, inside... there are only 8 seats arranged snugly facing a small kitchen manned by the Chef-Owner Chef Wei. The very young and talented Chef honed his culinary skills from overseas and had had working experience in Michelin-starred restaurants. A.Maze serves "Omakase" which literally means "leave it to the Chef", the menu is not informed to diners and it relies entirely on "trust" but Chef Wei is not a one-trick pony- diners' sense of taste is not the only thing that changes here... the "Omakse" menu switches once a month and it depends on the seasonal offering. Thanks to Chef Wei, we had the opportunity to join him in his extraordinary gastronomical journey.
