At first I thought the ice-cream would taste funny but it was THE BOMB! They serve set lunch ranges from RM14.50 to RM20.90, inclusive of soup of the day, main course and beverage. Here comes their signature ice cream for dessert! Salted duck egg ice cream. Yes, you saw that correctly - it is salted egg ice cream with actual salted duck egg bits! Ice cream is special indeed but I doubt it would not be everyone's preference especially when one is expecting the taste of a real sweet dessert.

The unusual Duck Lover Platter of Trio offers the duck chowder with bread stick, smoked duck on toast with tomato cilantro salsa and a Thai-style duck roll. Served with pieces of duck meat and button mushroom, the chowder boiled with vegetables was creamy enough. This appetizer with a wonderful interplay of flavors and textures is well worth a try.

One of the highlight is Pan Fried Snapper with Spicy Seafood Mousse (RM 32+), an award winning dish that was accoladed silver medalist during the recently concluded Penang International Food Festival (PIFF) Professional Chef Challenge. We thought the award winning dish is a clever invention that delicately adopting the culinary factor of Asian into a Western dish. The yellowish coloured sauce that comes with a hint of spiciness, along with the natural sweetness from the greens and earthy flavour derived from the mushrooms made a nice complement to the fresh and moist snapper.

oh do you know that the jelly is made in the coconut itself? unlike how we make our konnyaku jelly where we pour the mixture into moulds and let them chill and set. here at Joez Coconut, the coconut (outer husk removed) is first roasted in the oven and then chilled in cooler room. and that’s how the jelly formed from within! ingenius innit? no addictive or artificial chemical is added so the coconut bought must be kept in refrigerator and is best to consume within 3 days.

At first, am dropping by with a mixed feeling since his previous recommended cakes oasis at China House proved rather lukewarm- on the Red Wine Pear Cake. However, I kinda have to see eye to eye with him on the richness of cheese factor on the array made available as this cutely cow-themed café. Not forgetting the rather steeper price compared to other bakeries available elsewhere, even in KL itself. But, does it get justified with the taste and product quality? Thou shall find out if you happen to be in the vicinity.

We wanted Hainanese Chicken Chop but it was Hainanese Chicken Chop Rice that was sent to our table. The slab of Chicken Chop was well-coated with Egg and it was delicious. We love the meaty texture with a burst of alluring Eggy aroma. We were attracted by a peculiar choice in the menu - Roasted Pork Belly (RM 15) quiche. The filling of the savoury pastry was alright, having crispy crust and soft filling but the roasted pork was too hard and dried to enjoy. Perhaps changing into the conventional cheese + bacon topping would be better.

M'atural is serious when it comes to Apple Crumble... real Apple is used. The Green Apple was cut and stuffed with custard-like filling and topped with Crumble. It was then baked till golden brown but the crispiness of the fruit remained; safe but straight-forward combination. The sweetness comes from the Honey, a healthy sweet treat that could go well with a cup of Tea.

Chimmey we always go for classic which is Cinnamon sugar coated. Chimney is good, where the texture of it is slightly soggy chewy and done to perfection. If were to compare the one I had in Publika, KL, this is much better. Dough is also more fragrant. however the set back was the soft serve and 2 toppings which I find it quite expensive. Oh well, these are the kind of pricing for a dessert now days.

With sultry hot tropical weather all year long, it should be no surprise that Penang is swimming with amazing Ice Cream. The endless sweltering heat in Penang means non-stop cravings for a good serving of the icy sweet treat but forget the commercial ersatz brands that offer either Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry Ice Cream. For 4 years (since end of 2013), The Ais has been quietly serving some of the most delicate and healthy artisan Ice Cream in town. Co-founders Jonathan and Lydia's belief in healthy-eating cemented the core principal of The Ais; all products are made with care and low sugar content. The Ais was merely an online business but has since established its brick and mortar outlet in Pulau Tikus earlier (attached with an organic shop). In March 2017, It has now moved into a new location at Chulia Street and offering more options to its patrons. With more than 40 flavors available (not your usual boring flavors), there will be at least 3 alcohol-based Ice Cream and 16 types of Ice Cream on offer at all times (on rotation basis- you might not get some flavors on certain days); for those who concern, Vegan Ice Cream is also available.

The latest addition at Arena Curve, Bayan Lepas (opposite to Arang Coffee) serves up some Cronut-related sweet treats but that's not all, there are an array of the usual Cafe fare as well as some home-made pastries and cakes. Cafe Droptop has heavy presence in Korea and in recent years, it has expanded its business operations to other Asian countries. Its first outlet in Penang can be found at Maritime Piazza. The menu has a delicious mix of beverages and sweet treat; notable items include Maple Honey Toast, Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice) and Sweet Potato Latte. Nothing beats a hearty and warm meal of rice and dishes especially when done right, right? So, why Gohaniku? Gohaniku literally means rice (gohan) and meat (niku) in Japanese. A generic “mixed rice” stall is somewhat economical but lacks flavour while ordering rice and dishes from a typical restaurant might be costly and not practical especially when dining alone. Gohaniku stands in between by serving gourmet-level rice bowls that don’t cost much. After all, rice is a staple to majority of us and everyone deserves a daily good meal of rice. Here at Gohaniku, we are all about meat, rice and everything nice.

On the other hand, Salted Egg Crispy Pork (RM 10.90), which you can opt for chicken slices as well (higher price) had the rice bowls topped with crispy pork glazed with salted egg sauce. A more savoury option, and more sinful as well, it fits those who has a carnivorous diet.

We had both the signature Gohaniku Bowl and Salted Egg Bowl; the former one comes with crispy Pork Belly, Japanese-styled Stir Fried Pork, Mushrooms, Edamame and a half-cooked Egg, while the Salted Egg Bowl has crispy Fried Chicken dressed in Salted Egg sauce and blanketed with a sheet of Scrambled Egg. Gohaniku introduced a Malaysian touch to it by adding Sambal to it (almost like our Sambal Haebee). Gohaniku Bowl was alright, the seasoning was similar to those Japanese-styled Stir Fried meat dishes but the Salted Egg Bowl outshined it, the sauce was nicely executed. The beautiful part was the introduction of Kaffir Lime Leaves. Also note-worthy is that Gohaniku uses Japanese Rice in lieu of the conventional local White Rice.

Most regular patrons are back for their Nyonya Kuih, particularly their catering service that offers outstanding presentation. Even though the cafe is a little off the beaten track, it manages to attract a great crowd ever since its opening. But what's the pull factor? A turophile might be able to relate. The Little Journeyman Cafe, a tenant in The Museum Hotel, off Transfer Road and right smack in town; offers a small Western menu (with choices of Pasta, Toast and Sandwiches) but people are attracted to one particular dish- melted Raclette Cheese. The Swiss semi-firm salted Cheese is first melted and scraped on a serving of Potatoes; needless to say... that resonates across social media platforms. It may require extra effort to notice the cafe, the exterior is dull and the signage is small but once inside, it offers the standard cafe-coziness. There are limited numbers of tables and chairs though so if you are planning a visit on a Saturday, do make sure that you have secured your seats.

Their Mee Sua Koh was fit for the time, the consistency was great and the flavor was alright. But if we could nitpick, we would prefer it to have a little bite... perhaps some Fish Balls or Prawns would be suffice. Mee Sua Koh 鱼鳔面线糊 (Rm 13)

SiTigun Restaurant

siTigun looks to coffee as a tradition that fuels a respect and love that filters right down to the care with which the coffee beans are roasted. Delicious.

Apple Pie (RM 14.50) Apple Pie was something outstanding in terms of the taste due to the vivid layering texture. Apples can be tasted in every layer of the pie, something similar to a crepe texture.

We ought to give the special among the special a try, thus we ordered a Ice Kacang Special at the premium price of RM 6. The regular ice kacang is topped with 3 fruits of the day, and one of the ice cream available (if we recall correctly, it would be either peanut or vanilla). Overall the combination worked well, not overly sweet, and shaved ice was smooth and not exhibiting the ice crystals that will cause displeasure to the tongue.

Finally, before we hit off, decided to try out their French Toast @ RM 5.50. This is one of the best, fried to perfection, peanut butter amount is just right. Crust from outside, soft inside. Indeed one of a item must order.

The chilled avocado sago priced at RM10 is definitely one to consider. The flavor of the creamy and smooth treat is balanced with right sweetness. It’s addictive and keeps one feeling full!

Carbonara (RM 18.90) was a huge let down, The spaghetti noodles were slightly overcooked, while the whole plate of carbonara has scant quantity of mushrooms and topped with egg. Then the carbonara cream tasted unappetizing and bland in taste, rendering the Carbonara is a bad choice for the dinner.

The Seafood Aglio Olio was alright, though not exactly amazing, it did meet the basic requirement. The Pasta could be more al-dente but flavor-wise, it was pretty standard-average.
