Our choice of yogurt did not come with honey/gula Melaka that can complements the tartness of the yogurt, it's quite sour every bites we had, that's why we must eat the yogurt together with walnuts or raisins to neutralize it.

The Nasi 7 Benua is actually served with only the 7 type of rice on it and a vegetable by the side. The chicken and egg were later added by us. So it is always recommended that you add some other side dishes to the Nasi 7 Benua from the ready cooked dish or else you will only be eating 7 different type of rice which tasted almost the same.

The rice is given its own name that ranges from the Putih, Lemak, Tomato, Lamuni, Minyak, Kacang to the Hujan Panas. Basically, each rice has its special seasoning and taste respectively. Teluk Kumbar is often the de-facto place (on Penang island) to go to when it comes to Mee Udang, the fishing village is known for supplying the freshest catch in Penang. Pak Tam is not exactly the most famous joint but rather, well-hidden and secluded at a corner of Teluk Kumbar. The secret fishing spot is famous amongst anglers, it does take some navigating skills to reach there. On your way in, you will find untouched natural scenery and run-down village houses. The road can be bumpy so be prepared for an intense journey. There's a fresh water pond (man-made I presumed) and within a stone's throw distance away, there's a beach with clean, seemingly unpolluted waters. Pak Tam Mee Udang is a humble, unpretentious stall operating at the beach front. Like the name implies, it churns out Mee Udang. Diners get to choose between a few types of Noodles and the preferred Seafood choices (or opt out seafood). This may not be exactly the best Mee Udang around but the entire package (serene neighborhood with soothing sea breeze) is a rare encounter in a well-developed city.

Hikers that frequent Cherok To'Kun Hill at Bukit Mertajam, Penang should not be new to the name- Pan Man Mee Kuah Ketam. It is highly visible from the bustling Jalan Kulim, right at the junction to the foot of the hill. Many hikers usually stretch their hiking legs or take a quick recharge at the coffee shop before continuing their journey while some reward themselves with a serving of lip-smacking Mee Kuah Ketam (vice versa). I hope the name "Mee Kuah Ketam" rings a bell. "Kuah" refers to "gravy" in Malay and the direct translation would be "Noodles with Crab gravy". The seemingly thick, rich and starchy gravy was cooked for hours- boiling the (flower) crabs to fully accentuate the flavors. The result is a sweet, gooey gravy with bold crustacean sweetness; the dish is often served with Yellow noodles and extra condiments such as Baby Cuttlefish, Meat, fried Beancurd, boiled Potatoes and fried Fritters. While there are a few good ones around, Pak Man is one of the famous ones.

Set Nasi Ayam Cabe Ijo (RM 18.80) is priced exorbitantly in our opinion. At the very first impression (attributed to the misleading pictures), we thought it would be a glamorous lunch set with the items on the menu - tauhu goreng (at least few pieces we thought), Emping (Indonesia chips) and Sayur Asem (Indonesia vegetable in tamarind soup) served separately in a generous quantity. However, what we got is a mini buffet platter with a bowl of white rice, served along with the Ayam Cabe Ijo (no doubt it was good), a few pieces of small Emping, a piece of tauhu goreng and a small bowl of Soto alike soup. The Ayam Cabe Ijo, which is a nicely fried chicken whole leg marinated with green chili and various vegetables is delicious. Pairing it with the sambal nenas gives it a more spicy kick. However, the price tag RM 18.80 is still not justifiable.

Pempek is definitely the signature dish here. We had the Single Set which comes in few huge pieces fit for at least 2 diners. They were deep fried and possessed resilient texture, definitely not bouncy but not mushy soft either. One of them contained Egg and to be eaten together with a thick, sweet Vinegar-like dip as well as condiments like Dried Shrimp (in powder form) and Cucumber. Not addictive but not too shabby for a change.

The server introduced their Famous Laksa Cik Umi with aplomb so we decided to try it out. The serving was large and the soup was pretty thick (thicker than the usual Assam Laksa). But it had all the essential columns ticked- sour, savory, spicy and a hint of sweetness (from the Shrimp paste). The condiments were spot on either but if I had to comment, it would be the texture of the noodles... which I thought they could be a little springier. Equally delectable was the Nasi Kacang, a serving of oiled Rice with 2 types of curries. Amazing flavors but we were not over-whelmed by the dish.

No matter how many times you have been to Tanjung Bungah, there's a deliciously hidden side to the beach front town; some are even unknown by the locals. Warung Tok Mat Mee Udang is one of the secrets well-kept by the locals but the place is well-hidden from the bustling Jalan Tanjung Bungah. To reach there, one needs to travel a path less-traveled (refer to the bottom of this review for the directions); those who made their way there are those who are in the know. It is known to serve some of the freshest Mee Udang in the neighborhood- the restaurant sits by the beach side, offering spectacular beach view to its diners. The owner is related to a fisherman and it explains the source of supplies.

Besides the popular choice of yellow mee, the prawns can be cooked with koew teow, bee hoon or maggie mee (instant noodles). More options for the Muslim diners in Bayan Baru area- Le Carbonara is a newly opened Western-Italian restaurant that offers Italian-inspired Western dishes (run by Muslim Chef). The place looks simple and the interior setting is basic; we were really concerned if our calories will be wasted. But we were glad that everything turned out well; in fact, Le Carbonara sets the bar high. Prices may not seem wallet-friendly at first glance but if you were to check out carefully, they offer some uncommon dishes (like Ravioli) at acceptable rates. The budget-watcher or lunch-crowd may watch out for their Set Lunch, economically priced at Rm 20.90 nett, it includes a serving of Soup, Main, Dessert as well as a drink. While the dishes did not disappoint, it did take them a while to serve our orders. Those who are in a rush may wish to have their dishes pre-ordered to avoid disappointment. Le Carbonara at Arena Curve is facing Arang Coffee.

Silver Spoon knows their Pesto Sauce well, the flavors were amazing; the herbaceous element was there, complemented with rich, cream-based sauce. A pity that the Spaghetti was over-cooked though we enjoyed the sauce a lot. It's hard to find Rib Eye Steak that costs below Rm 50 in Penang but as expected, the cut was a lackluster. Though the Red Wine sauce was beautifully done, the texture of the meat was somewhat disappointing. The meat was rough and the bite was less-satisfying. The Rib Eye Steak was served with a side of Potato Au Gratin and some greens. All in all, we have no complaints given the promotional rates but for usual rates, we thought they could do better.

So Thaisty started out as a Thai Tea parlour but recently, it has rolled out its food menu. Housed in a snug shop lot right to the Bayan Baru mosque (facing the Bayan Baru wet market), So Thaisty is known to serve thirst-quenching Thai Tea but its newly introduced food menu focuses on noodle-dishes. Noodle-lovers would be glad to know that no common Thai dishes such as Tom Yum or Kerabu but instead, some unconventional Thai-inspired noodle dishes. Though the menu is small, the flavors are big; the Chef pays great attention to small details as to the use of herbs and spices. Given the satisfying quality, we thought the dishes are competitively priced. It is also noteworthy that So Thaisty does catering as well, so it might be a decent option to cater for the Muslim crowd (manned by Muslim Chef and proprietor).

Lao Jie Fang, a familiar brand name in the traditional confectioneries and native local products in Penang has ventured out of its usual business scope... opening a Coffee Shop (otherwise known as Kopitiam) at Sunrise Gurney, a new commercial building right next to Jalan Birch and Gurney Drive. It serves up some Malaysian/ Singaporean staples such as Kaya Butter Toast, Nyonya Kuih, Nasi Lemak etc. It certainly reminds us of establishments like Old Town and Papa Rich except that it offers slightly different variety as compared to the duo. Might be good place for a quick afternoon tea but the dishes were a tad too common with elusive quality for us.

The truth is that the appearance of the maggie goreng did not look appetizing at all. It looked like a bowl of maggi soup that has been left there for some time and the soup have been absorbed fully by the noodles, giving it a very sticky outlook. Taste wise, we felt it was alright. There were nice curry flavour but the overall mushy texture just not our preference, and somehow ruined the taste in our opinion. The signature Beef Noodles was delicious, it was served to us piping hot. The broth was flavorful and multi-dimensional, it was delicately spiced with some spices that my untrained taste buds could not discerned. The meat was expertly cooked to fork-tender though we would prefer them to cut them in bigger size (we prefer the juicy bite). The noodles on the other hand, were smooth but less-bouncy. It was something out of our expectation as we were expecting the noodles to be bouncy and al-dente but they turned out to be the smooth and soft type of noodles (not exactly the texture we like but it was okay). For non-beef eaters, there is an option to replace beef with Chicken (in any dishes). The sliced Chicken Noodles impressed us with its meticulously seasoned, clean-tasting broth bursting with Chicken essence. We were not convinced with the bland color but we were proven wrong, it was in fact, very delicious; this is the type of food that I would yearn for during wet, rainy days. If you like your food with gentle chili kick, remember to ask for their special Chili Oil (complimentary).
