Hiking Trail in Mount Aspiring National Park
Rob Roy Track Attraction
Open HourAccess is restricted to the lower lookout when avalanche danger is present (June–November).
Located in Matukituki Valley area and Mount Aspiring National Park in the Otago region
10 km return via same track Walking and tramping 3–4 hr Easy: Walking track
Another 30 minutes of hiking (and listening to the podcast) later we arrived at the upper lookout. It wasn’t as high as we expected, but it’s nevertheless an awesome viewpoint. We found ourselves a nice spot on the rocks to enjoy the view over the mountain walls with a couple of waterfalls, the valley, and the Rob Roy Glacier (duh!). If you have some patience, you might see some snow or ice fall down. I know we did! Too bad there was fog (or clouds?) hanging over the glacier.
Blue Pools Track Attraction
- Popular New Zealand Attraction
1.5 km return via same track Walking and tramping 1 hr Easiest: Short walk
It's a nice blue pool if you plan to take a dip, else the sandflies just occupy you.
We found one of the last few spots to park our car (it was crowded even on a weekday in March) and crossed the highway to get on the other side, where the entrance of the Blue Pools is located. There is a clearly marked pathway that leads to a swing bridge where the actual pool is. We walked for about 20 minutes (starting from the entrance) to get to the swing bridge. I was wearing a t-shirt that day, and people coming back from the track were giving me weird looks, almost as if they were hinting something at me. Later, I would understand why this was the case. The Blue Pools and Haast pass area in general is filled with sandflies. They swarm all over you and bite. So, I had to pull on my jacket to keep those sandflies at bay. Amazingly, they still bit us on whatever skin they could find, forehead, neck, etc. My advice to you is apply sandfly/insect repellant before you go to this place.
Wishbone Falls Attraction
A 77-meters tall, Wishbone Falls adorns the entrance to the Mt Aspiring National Park. The waterfall can be seen even from the road and a popular swimming stop among the locals. Wishbone Falls is included into New Zealand Must See Waterfall's list.
