Bad mountain range based puns aside, the view from the top of Queenstown Hill is pretty amazing. There are several little hills you can climb — it’s quite a big area and there didn’t seem to be one main viewpoint. The Queenstown Hill hike is renowned for having some of the best views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables, and it definitely lives up to the hype. Hiking to the summit requires a bit of effort but most people should be able to handle it. It took me just over two hours (including quite a long detour), so it won’t put too much of a dent in your day.

The hike up Queenstown Hill is a rather steep and physically demanding one, which could leave you feeling breathless, but all you have to do is bite the bullet and you’ll be handsomely rewarded with glorious, breathtaking views of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu right at the top. I highly recommend this hike as Queenstown Hill is located right in the heart of the city and it takes all but 2-3 hours to complete the hike.

Another 30 minutes of hiking (and listening to the podcast) later we arrived at the upper lookout. It wasn’t as high as we expected, but it’s nevertheless an awesome viewpoint. We found ourselves a nice spot on the rocks to enjoy the view over the mountain walls with a couple of waterfalls, the valley, and the Rob Roy Glacier (duh!). If you have some patience, you might see some snow or ice fall down. I know we did! Too bad there was fog (or clouds?) hanging over the glacier.

The track is well marked till the Ben Lomond Saddle. After that orange poles disappear. You just make your way to the top. Ben Lomond Track goes through the forest than passing Skyline Gondola upper station the view opens and there is nothing more than little shrubs and tussocks.

In the end the hike up to the summit looked worse from below than it actually was, and the extra hour turned out to be more than worth it. The 360 degree views from the summit were pretty great.

It's a nice blue pool if you plan to take a dip, else the sandflies just occupy you.

We found one of the last few spots to park our car (it was crowded even on a weekday in March) and crossed the highway to get on the other side, where the entrance of the Blue Pools is located. There is a clearly marked pathway that leads to a swing bridge where the actual pool is. We walked for about 20 minutes (starting from the entrance) to get to the swing bridge. I was wearing a t-shirt that day, and people coming back from the track were giving me weird looks, almost as if they were hinting something at me. Later, I would understand why this was the case. The Blue Pools and Haast pass area in general is filled with sandflies. They swarm all over you and bite. So, I had to pull on my jacket to keep those sandflies at bay. Amazingly, they still bit us on whatever skin they could find, forehead, neck, etc. My advice to you is apply sandfly/insect repellant before you go to this place.

The Diamond Lake track was a beautiful spot for me to go for a quick summer evening hike, or for a longer one if I had an afternoon off. It doesn’t take all that long and the payoff for the amount of effort you put in is very high!

The surrounding landscape was once again breath-taking, and huge! We climbed a little further up the bluff to an area that gave us 270 degree views out over the farmland below to Lake Wanaka, Roys Peak & Glendhu Bay beyond.

The recommended time to complete the hike is 5 to 7 hours. It is a steady 1300 meter climb to the top, steep in some places, with very few flat or downhill sections. The higher you go the better the views get. It took us four and half hours total to do the hike, including a stop for lunch and a stop for photos. We did not go all of the way to the peak. Higher than the point where we took our family photo the mountains were completely hidden in the clouds. Other hikes who went higher advised us that there was zero visibility higher up on the mountain.

Moke Lake is surrounded by mountains and you get great views regardless of where by the water you choose to rest. It’s safe for swimming and after a few minutes in the hot sun I very much cursed myself for not bringing my bikini! If water activities are your thing it’s a great place to SUP or kayak, just watch out for duckling swimming amongst the reeds.

This is an amazing track due to the season, still some snow near the peak but not too much, mixing up with the bushes to create an illusion of poka dots mountain. Absolutely gorgeous. 蛮有挑战性的一座山。山上有点积雪,加上有本的草丛,变成了斑点山。非常漂亮,非常壮观。

Isthmus Peak is memorable thanks to these views, but, for me, I can’t help but also instantly think of the variety of terrains this hike leads you on. There’s everything from grass to fine soil to rocks – hence my warning about bringing along good, sturdy shoes. Also, once you leave the sheep and paddocks behind, this is when Isthmus Peak becomes a lot more challenging. Expect steep gradients and long, long (LONG) uphills. I used to hike a lot with my Dad when I lived in South Africa, and I haven’t taken on a hike as challenging as Isthmus Peak since those regular hiking days.

The Lake Alta Track starts at the Remarkables Ski Field near Queenstown, New Zealand. I walked around 6 kilometres including my aimless wondering around the lake. I used a brochure ‘Wakatipu Walks’ that I picked up from the DOC office in Queenstown and that, along with my GPS maps was enough for this well marked route. I’d rate this walk as easy, although there is a bit of climbing involved. The walk is in an alpine area so come prepared for dodgy weather.
