More options for seasoned Steamboat diners at Raja Uda, Guan Xian Lao Ma (灌县老妈砂锅串串) is one of the biggest names when it comes to Steamboat/ Hot Pot in Sze Chuan, China. The restaurateur obtained local franchisee license to operate an extended branch here... at Raja Uda Commercial City Centre, Butterworth (same row as Pentagon 5). The brand is known to dish out Sze Chuan Ma-La Spicy Hot Pot with Skewers... the same concept is being brought to the branch in Raja Uda as well. The restaurant is nicely decorated, step in the restaurant and you will be instantly teleported to China... even the stools, wall paper, lighting and tables; all resemble the characteristics of old Chinese decorations. The menu is fairly large, diners can either order by filling up the order form or simply head to the display fridge and help themselves with the skewers (Rm 1.80 per stick). There are of course, some standard items but only a handful of soup bases available.

There are a few types of soup based to choose from, ranging from the non-spicy authentic chicken pot to the fiery hot Si Chuan Spicy Chicken Pot(Half Chicken). Though initially the price tag (RM 68) may give you a surprise but it is worth the value - it comes with half free-range chicken. Even though smaller in size, the free-range chicken meat was so tender and it absorbed the essence from the soup, giving a great level of satisfaction. As a matter of fact, the best way to enjoy the steamboat is to have the chicken first before adding in other ingredients, as this will ensure you savour the most original taste of the soup.

If you think Hot Pot would be heaty, greasy and full with Monosodium-Glutamate (MSG), you need to pay a visit to Flavor Food. The modest and rather invisible Hot Pot restaurant is a new addition to Pulau Tikus, well-tucked in one of the shop houses on the bustling Burmah Road (right next to Union Primary School). Flavor Food believes in extracting the natural wholesomeness of the ingredients and bold seasonings will not be seen here. Most ingredients are home-made and they are not a big supporter over processed food either. The fully air-conditioned restaurant has a chic but cozy atmosphere, most suitable for family occasion or casual dining. The observant would notice their sleek stone pot, specially designed to suit the theme. A Hot Pot restaurant with heavy Cantonese-roots it seems; but as far as quality and service are concerned, I'd definitely love to revisit.

Affordably priced at Rm 19.90 for a basic set (serves 2), budget watchers can now enjoy delicious Thai Steamboat at unbeatable price, well-complemented with sea breeze. The simple set includes some basic meat balls, greens and meat but those with a deeper pocket can always top up extra few dollars for the additional spread. Bangkok Garden BBQ is not air-conditioned and instead, it relies on the sea breeze so the best time to visit would probably in the evening. The serving portion is not that great but it would be perfectly fine to be served as supper in lieu of a proper meal. Bangkok Garden BBQ can be found right next to Sae Ma Eul Korean BBQ Restaurant.

Classic soup bases like Pig Bone Soup and Tom Yum are available with a few exquisite and innovative offering for the adventurous, worth-mentioning are Milk Cheese Soup, Green Spicy Soup, Spicy Milk Soup etc. Soup bases aside, Tu Go Liang stands out in terms of the variety of steamboat offering; notable highlights include their home-made Yong Tofu, various types of Fish and Meat Balls, vegetables, meat and seafood. The atmosphere is casual here- the heat intolerant may opt to dine-in the air-conditioned room while those who prefer a more outdoorsy ambiance could choose the al-fresco dining area.

Consider yourself incredibly lucky if you are a fan of Sze Chuan food, more options for you right now with the opening of Hero Pot at Karpal Singh Drive. Belongs to the "Mix", a convenient store that sells fancy imported goods from China, Japan, Korea etc, Hero Pot offers Sze Chuan-influenced dishes and of course... Sze Chuan "Mala" Hot Pot. But everything is designed to be ostentatious here, when you are about to enter the premise, you will be greeted by servers wearing traditional Chinese outfit. They will bring you to your table and before you are seated, they will shout "heroes are coming"... an awkward start to a meal. The menu is Hot Pot-centric, with a few classic Chinese snacks. Service is attentive but do not expect things to be cheap here, expect to fork out at least Rm 50 per pax for a decent meal here. Not particularly impressive as far as taste is concerned... if you must know.

Being a steamboat-obsessed community, Penangites welcome all sorts of steamboat or hotpots; evidently seen from the forever-increasing steamboat restaurants in town. Red Stone Hotpot is one of the new members that pays homage to the tongue-numbing Sze Chuan hotpot but their concept of serving Hotpot is unusual and distinctive. Unlike its competitors, Red Stove does not serve the soup/ food as it is; instead, the Chef cooks in front of you... from scratch. Dining here is like being at a cook show. The Chef prepares the ingredients and starts the cooking process in front of the diners... from cooking until seasoning, diners get to witness the entire process. Commendable is the use of effective tools to shield the oil from spilling over to diners. The flavors are good but not mind-blowingly amazing but it is definitely a fun place to visit for the novelty experience.

One of the dish that we miss the most from Taiwan would be their Minced Pork Rice. The portion is relatively small, exactly like the conventional portion offered in regular restaurants in Taiwan and the price is affordable too - just RM 8.00. Feed Me Love's Hot Pot series would satisfy any big eaters, the serving portion is huge with a basket of Hot Pot ingredients as well as a bowl of White Rice. We had the Collagen Hot Pot... the seemingly healthy broth was delicious with a mild vegetable-sweetness but we did not feel a strong presence of the protein (Collagen), as though we were having ordinary healthy Hot Pot broth. Truly a posh dining experience, the newly opened Stone Nine Hot Pot by Jiro Shabu redefines the classic way of enjoying Steamboat/ Hotpot. Not only does the place introduce personal pot, the interior decor strives to take your breath away. The restaurant covered in shades of wood exudes a sense of tranquility while the dining utensils promote elegance and sophistication. We did not expect the price points to be low, given the upscale interior decor. As expected, the price tags are hefty- expect to spend at least Rm 40-50 per person here, with the cheapest beverage (Green Tea) priced at Rm 5 (refillable). The dining experience however, is exclusive. Everyone gets to savor his/her own Hotpot and the ingredients are impressively fresh; at least... the prices are well-justified. Stone Nine Hot Pot by Jiro Shabu is right next to Citibank Malaysia, at Auto City, Bukit Mertajam.

More and more China Chinese Steamboat/ Hot Pot restaurants sprung up in Penang recently, Chuan Style Steamboat occupies a prominent spot at Bagan Jermal (T-junction of Mount Erskine and Burmah Road). The restaurant has huge posters on "Sze Chuan Face-Changing Opera" (变脸) and it does not take long for one to figure out what type of cuisine they are serving. The selections here are huge, ranging from the classic Sze Chuan Spicy Hot Pot to some uncommon Soups as well as some familiar Sze Chuan dishes. But most diners are here for its Hot Pot; the price points are however, not as wallet-friendly as budget-watchers would have hoped. A standard meal here is easily more than Rm 50 per pax so the place is more for occasions in lieu of regular meals.

With the concerns over healthy lifestyle, hotpot devotees have found their way out and now, steamed hotpot seems to be the rage. The idea was started in China- heating the distilled water produces heat to cook the food, there will be a dish at the bottom of the pot to collect the water vapor and essence of the steamed food. MQL Steamed Hotpot is first of its kind at Icon City, Bukit Mertajam. The idea is to serve the food in its unadulterated best, without adding additional seasonings or flavors to the food. Foods are steamed dish by dish on the table, with a fixed sequence (with induction stove fit seamlessly onto the table). The trained servers will advise the sequence as well as the cooking time. Seasonings and marination are minimal so diners get to enjoy the natural flavors of the ingredients. Guests can choose from different set menus but each set combo is carefully paired with balanced elements; the fully air-conditioned restaurant is most suitable for family dinners. MQL can be found on the 2nd floor, right above St. Espresso at Icon City, Bukit Mertajam.

The year end rainy season is surely an unexpected encounter; as temperature drops, the urge to have something comforting and tummy-warming gets stronger. One of the best ways to warm the body up is to enjoy a sumptuous Hot Pot. New kid on the block- Zhong Sheng Bowl Soup Hot Pot (一碗汤) housed in one of the shop houses opposite to Queensbay Mall; offers an array of Chinese healthy Hot Pots. The newly opened Viet Food Vietnamese restaurant is certainly not short of Vietnamese competition in Jelutong area but in terms of variety and execution, it stands on its own. Housed in one of the shop houses in Taman Kheng Tian (behind Old Town Perak Road), Viet Food is not an easy spot that catches the eye. The interior is cramped and filled with Vietnamese staff that struggles to speak local dialects, not even basic English; but the place has a good showing of Vietnamese locals. We were not surprised. The menu is large enough that it took us a while to browse through; the quintessential Vietnamese eats are there as well as scatters of the unexpected (such as Balut, Banh Mi, Fish Cakes and authentic Vietnamese sweet treats). Bounteous offering, budget-friendly, authentic and top-notch food; one of the best places for Vietnamese delicacies in Penang.

Chicken Hot Pot 鸡公煲 (Rm 24.90) The small portion of Chicken Hot Pot was just nice enough for the 2 of us. There is a range of spiciness you can choose from. We picked the middle one and thought it was just alright (not that spicy for us). The seasoning was bold, in fact, a little too bold for us (we were then told that it would be better to enjoy with Rice). The Chicken on the other hand, was tender and well-cooked. Flavors were well-absorbed and they were quite generous with the condiments (Capsicum, Onions, Carrots etc).

We did not try any of the Sze Chuan-influenced Hot Pot but a classic Herbal Cordyceps Chicken Pot instead. The Chicken (and Herbs) are cooked by order, within 15 minutes, the rich, flavorful Chicken Pot would be ready. The broth turns from milky white to yellow and diners waiting in anticipation will be caught in a whiff of alluring aroma of Chinese Herbs. We love how in dept the flavors were and the Chicken pieces were most delicious and tender. As we were about to finish, we requested the server to refill the Chicken broth and made it into Steamboat. For the portion, we thought the prices were well-justified.

It's hard to miss Ji Bao Wang (鸡煲王), not only does the strategic location (at the corner of Larut Road to Hutton Lane and Burmah Road, next to KFC Larut Road or opposite to Hotel Royal Penang) gives the restaurant an edge in exposure, the playful-catchy banner that says "我要叫鸡" has caught a lot of attention as well (shall not be translated into English). As the tagline may suggest, the place specializes in serving various types of Chicken Hot Pot but the signature dish here is the Sze Chuan-influenced Chicken Hot Pot. The dining concept is somewhat interesting- diners will be served a ready-to-eat Chicken Hot Pot, hot soup will then be added when you are done. It then becomes Steamboat and diners may now adjourn to the display fridges to pick up the preferred ingredients to be added to the soup (prices vary according to the colors of the plates). The interior decor is modern and chic but with a touch of China Chinese flair. Price points are high but the quality is less-satisfying, the authenticity is missing (lackluster service and below-par quality, pretty disappointing). Ironically, we then found out that this place is a sister restaurant to Chong Qing Steamboat (at Kelawei Road).
