4Fingers Crispy Chicken - Gurney Paragon Restaurant

L1-06, Ground Floor Gurney Paragon Mall 10250 Georgetown Penang

At 4FINGERS, we’re nuts about chicken. So when we discovered the best Asian crispy chicken in New York City’s grungy subway scene, we knew we had to share it. And so began the revolution of crispy chicken. Spicy, crispy, unique and downright addictive - it's chicken that's so bad, it's good. And there are thousands who would agree with us.

For those who prefer meaty bite sans the bones, the Chicken Chop could be another option for them- Boneless slab of Chicken Chop glazed with Soy Garlic or Hot sauce, served with Fries. If the Asian in you demands Rice, the Drumsticks Rice Box would do the trick. 2 huge Chicken Drumsticks served over steaming hot Rice, drizzled over sweet Teriyaki sauce would satisfy your Asian palate.

Ginseng Chicken for RM 38. It is the classic version with half portion of a free-range chicken and glutinous rice. Ginseng scent could be tasted from the soup but it lacks the depth that yields wow factor, especially the chicken did not really take in all the essence yet. Good thing is the restaurant provides rock salt for you to customize the soup saltiness level, and once salt added (especially onto the chicken), it elevates the taste to another level.

Sae Ma Eul, a longtime Korean barbecue joint (well-established in Klang Valley) expanded to Penang recently and we figured out at least a trio of reasons for that: quality, authenticity and a good selection of not only meat but Korean delights (such as cold noodles, Kimchi stew, Korean Pancake etc) as well. The new Penang branch can be found on 1st floor of Automall (at Karpal Singh Drive) but don't be put off by the location. Though not air-conditioned, it provides an outdoorsy ambiance with good ventilation (sea breeze if you are lucky); exactly like those barbecue joints by the roadside in South Korea. The setting is casual, modern and clean; Sae Ma Eul uses charcoal to fuel and cook the meat but fret not for the divas, the helpful service staff are forever ready to assist. The alcoholics might be glad to know that the Korean BBQ place offers "Hite" Beer and Korean Soju; otherwise, the complementary unlimited refills of water would mercilessly effective at washing away the accumulating heat.

Bibimbap is one of the most popular choices at Belly Good, probably due to its wallet-friendly factor. Belly Good's rendition comes with a concoction of julienned greens like Carrots, Cucumber, Mushrooms, Seaweed and topped with a Sunny Side Up, with the quintessential Gochujang sauce for seasoning. The result was an intimate flavor-combination, we recommend enjoying it with the crunchy, refreshing Kim Chi. The Ginseng Chicken Soup on the other hand, was a disappointment. Not that it was weakly seasoned, the flavor did not stand out. It lacked the much sought-after Ginseng element and the soup was rather diluted. The absence of Glutinous Rice left us underwhelmed either. Not everything was great and it turned out that the safer options (or those that would never go wrong) like Bibimbap are always the best bets.

We enjoyed the well balanced sweetness introduced by the condensed milk and the sleek shaved ice that gentle to the tongue. If you are tired of the usual franchise cafes around, it's high time that you pay a visit to Cafe Droptop, a Korean-franchise brand that has recently landed on Penang. Cafe Droptop has heavy presence in Korea and in recent years, it has expanded its business operations to other Asian countries. Its first outlet in Penang can be found at Maritime Piazza. Like most franchise brands, Cafe Droptop offers a standard cafe menu with a Korean touch. The menu has a delicious mix of beverages and sweet treat; notable items include Maple Honey Toast, Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice) and Sweet Potato Latte. Prices are on the higher side but the modern-chic atmosphere is comfortable and cozy, definitely a place where you can spend some leisure time with your friends or family.

We've had Kyo Chon's Salsal Chicken Strips before (in Pavilion branch), we thought the ones here in Penang were of same quality. The Chicken Strips were deep fried till perfect crisp while the inner part remains juicy and tender. It went well with the Honey Mustard dip. To our dismay, their signature Deep Fried Chicken Wings and Drumette were of smaller sizes than expected. There were not much flesh, though the flavors were bold, it lacked the satisfying meaty bite. In case you are wondering... the Fried Chicken were not greasy at all.... thanks to the Korean's way of frying Chicken, which renders out all the fats in the meat, leaving a crispy crust with succulent flesh inside.

As if the fast-food competition is not fierce enough, the South-Korean inspired joint- 3 Korean Fried Chicken joins in the war, opening a new outlet at the Pusat Perniagaan Maju Utama, Bukit Mertajam. Korean Fried Chicken and classic Korean delicacies (like Kim Chi, Tteokbokki, Korean Fried Rice) make up the menu. The serving portion is small but it commensurate with the wallet-friendly prices. One of the few Korean restaurants at Butterworth- Da Ohn Da Korean Restaurant is the brand's only branch in Penang (HQ in Ipoh); similar to most Korean restaurants, it offers a wide range of Korean delights including barbecue, Hot Pot, Rice and Noodle dishes. There are however, some uncommonly seen Korean dishes here. Prices seem to be friendlier than most established Korean restaurants in Penang but the interior decor is less-impressive. It looks exactly like an ordinary restaurant in the neighborhood (the only thing Korean about this place is the Korean drama posters adorning the walls). The lack of proper ventilation system makes the place smoky so be prepared to face the smoke odor after a meal here at Da Ohn Da. To find Da Ohn Da Korean restaurant- from Raja Uda, turn into the road opposite to Kwong Wah Primary School. You will find the Korean restaurant on your left shortly.

Ddung's Bob Burger serves their burgers just like how one would expect it to be but Rice was replaced in lieu of fluffy-soft Burger Bun. The savory mayhem consists of Kim Chi, Korean Fried Chicken and Tuna; well-sandwiched with two layers of spice-flavored Rice. The concoction reminds of Chicken Rice (heavily drenched in Sauce) or wet Onigiri, well-inflected in the form of burger. It carried a gentle heat with a sleek sweetness while the acidity in the Kim Chi cuts through the sweetness and provides another layer of dimension. Flavors were well-balanced and texture was well-taken care of (with juicy Corns and crispy Fried Chicken). It was quite good on sharing basis (not too sure how it fares if one were to finish it entirely on his/her own).

Soft Tofu Stew (RM 17) here is one of the best we have tried so far in Penang. The taste of the stew packs was immensely rich yet soothing at the same time, though it does not look anything extraordinary from its appearance. It has a slight heat component, a balance of sweet and salty, a tad of aromatic tofu and egg scent, along with some tender pork which we added for another RM 3. This soft tofu stew definitely will make an excellent choice during a rainy afternoon or evening.

Miga Korean BBQ Restaurant is a new Korean restaurant near Bay Avenue, Queensbay Mall that places real emphasis on Korean traditional and classic delights. Not only does the place has the standard Korean restaurant setting, the menu offers plates and set menus with options like Korean Barbecue, Hot Pots, Bibimbap, Jap Chae, Tteokbokki and various Korean noodles. Playful creations are not found here but clean, straight-forward Korean cuisine. This new kid on the block does the classics well, with slightly more polished service (though foreigners) than many established spots in town. Mr. Dakgalbi - Gurney Plaza Restaurant

170-03-61 A Gurney Plaza 170 Persiaran Gurney 10250 Georgetown Penang

A recipe that dates back to the 1960s, dakgalbi consists of stir-fried marinated chicken in a chili pepper paste along with Dduk (rice cake) and a fine selection of side dishes. Among these variations, one can choose variations like Bean Sprouts Dakgalbi, Seafood Dakgalbi and even a variety of fried rice, seafood pancake and noodles. More so than the sheer deliciousness of their dakgalbi, Mr. Dakgalbi is also known for offering patrons the novelty of having a chef personally cook your food at your table. Bearing a premium price tag at RM 130 per set, the high tea set revolves around peculiar items that you least expect will appear in 3-tier high tea set, yet the taste was miraculously appeasing. There is no doubt that Korean cuisine is having a certified moment in Penang; one of the biggest names in the Korean food industry- Omaya has finally landed on this northern State of Malaysia. The Korean joint has international presence and has more than 100 branches across 8 countries. The latest addition at Penang marks the brand's fifth branch in Malaysia. Instead of classic traditional Korean restaurant setting, Omaya takes on a younger approach- industrialized workshop interior decor, offering modern Korean delights with a twist. What truly separates Omaya with other Korean food joints (in Penang) is the introduction of gooey melted Cheese into the Korean dishes as well as its signature Seafood Platter or Korean Hot Stew. The selection here is compelling; this is a place suitable for large groups of people so tucking in the abundance Seafood platter or gigantic Korean Hot Stew makes more sense than dining out alone. With the availability of alcohol (particularly their Soju drinks), this place is suitable for gatherings. Omaya Queensbay Mall can be found at 2nd floor, right next to Sakae Sushi in the center atrium.

We were definitely caught off-guard when we saw the red hot colour for both Gochujang Bulgogi (Spicy Stir Fried Pork with Onions and Hot Chili Pepper Paste, 辣椒酱猪肉 RM 30) and Haemul-Tang (Spicy Seafood Stew, made by boiling a variety of seafood in spicy broth 海物汤 RM 65). Anyway, do not be deceived by its red hot colour. It was not as burning as we thought, nor the heat will build up gradually. The taste was rich yet mild without causing any numbness on the lips. Gochujang Bulgogi was more on a sweet side, while Haemul-Tang packs a generous quantity of a variety of seafood, which includes small crabs and prawns. The soup offers a nice scent of seafood though its murky appearance might turn you off.

The taste of the food here is not bad .. but the serving portion is small which i feel that it is kinda expensive with such price.

An extended branch of Saranghae Penang at Gottlieb Road, MOiM serves as a casual spot for a quick Korean meal. It does not have a huge menu but good enough for those who need a quick Korean fix. Do not expect Korean BBQ or Hot Pot but rather, some simple Korean home-cooked dishes like Jap Chae, Kim Chi stew, Ramyeon and some Korean Rice dishes. The setting does not portray heavy Korean elements, except for the friendly Korean server whom barely speaks English. Service was lackluster... especially the rule that does not allow diners to refill for Ban Chan, not even once; for the small serving portion, we thought the price tags were somewhat hefty.
