Inspired by the Chong Qing-Grilled Fish, Fatt Kee Roast Fish has recently gained a lot of attention from netizens due to its gigantic serving with loads of Seafood swimming in the huge pot. The concept is not new- Deep Fried Fish with Seafood (like Prawns, Squid, Flower Clams) and vegetables soaked in a spicy-savory Seafood broth; served in the way similar to Hot Pot/ Steamboat. The spiciness varies and can be tuned accordingly but the heat-intolerant should be extra careful on selecting the spiciness as it can be lip-burning hot. It can be then enjoyed just like an ordinary Hot Pot, with extra condiments like Udon, Vegetables and Seafood to be added. Do note that there are two branches and both locations are near to each other; one is air-conditioned while another one is al-fresco setting. The flavors were fun and the combination was exciting, a place worth visiting.

Usually there’s a long wait for the freshly baked egg tarts, but we were lucky to able to get our hands on them within minutes. Nam Heong’s egg tarts are actually as good as what you get at Hong Kee and their main difference lies in the tart shell. As you can see Nam Heong’s egg tart crust is layered which contributes to that crispy and satisfying bite. It’s also a good idea to enjoy the tarts as soon as possible while they are still warm. Those that we took away and ate later that night just didn’t taste quite as awesome.

Nam Heong Ipoh Nasi Lemak One of the main difference this version compared to those that we have eaten at other places; is the rice which is Pandan flavored. The second is that; this Nasi Lemak is served with pieces of Luncheon meat (Chinese Style) accompanied with the spicy cockles (kerang) sambal which we really like.

Penang Dry Kuay Teow, 8.50 ringgit. I most probably would not order this dish again. It basically was a kechupy noodle with slices of steamed chicken and some salad greens. Yup. I think I ordered the wrong dish thinking it was actually fried kuay teow. That was my bad, should have known better but I was in la la land. The Char Koay Teow may not look much different from the others, but it was really delicious, fragrantly fried with lots of “wok-hei” flavour! Air Itam Market Assam Laksa Restaurant

Air Itam Market Jalan Pasar (Market Road) 11500 Air Itam, Penang Malaysia

Penang Assam Laksa or better known as Penang Laksa, is originated from the emergence of Chinese and Malay elements (Baba and Nyonya). The specialty of Penang Laksa is its thick and sour minced fish soup with a little spiciness. That is because the soup is cooked with chili paste and assam (tamarind) water to prevent the fishy smell. The soup is served with rice noodles and vegetables, and shrimp paste. The shrimp paste adds sweetness to the soup, which distinguish Penang Laksa from other types of Laksa in Malaysia.

Our RM 188 package came with a range of ingredients such as fish maws, grouper fish slices, pork slices, cheese balls, fish balls with fillings, enoki mushrooms, prawns, abalone slices, Chinese sausages, tofu, vermicelli and etc. In our opinion, that is a competitively priced package which best shared among 6-8 adults. Filled with classic ingredients such as chicken feet, pig skin, pig intestine, herbal egg, special home blend garlic vinegar sauce and also chili paste. The gravy is definitely the one that makes Kim Leng loh mee unique. The thick gravy is flavourful and gives a bit hint of sweetness. It is very inviting. Next, KayaButter love its braised eggs, very well marinated. You can add extra ingredients as you like such as the chicken legs, braised eggs, meats and internal organs. Perhaps our expectations were a lil too high? It was a beautiful Saturday evening and we looked forward to dining in the very much hyped - The Chow Kit Kitchen & Bar. The Reservation We made a booking of table for four on 1st October 2020. Reservation was made 72 hours prior and it was done via online. The Welcome Friendly smiles greeted us as we stepped in. We were all in awe with the interior transformation of what was once Tune Hotel. It definitely felt like we walked into a 1950’s movie set in New York City. The dimmed yellow light created a sexy, cozy environment. The Table We requested for a table near the wall as we know that we will be a tad loud. There were many tables available when we walked in. After being declined twice based on “These tables are reserved”, we settled with a table right in front of the open-concept kitchen. We thought to ourselves – “Didn’t we reserved too?” I supposed we wouldn’t be a lil upset if we were being told nicely or at least, like we mattered. The Order Menu selection was wonderful. We decided that we want to order some snacks from their Happy Hour promo – 3 bar snacks for RM40 to munch on first while deciding on the rest. We ordered The Nachos, Handcut Fries and Sambal & Cracker from this gentleman whom we believed to be the restaurant manager. He was very nice. It was a shame that I did not get his name. ------- We were ready to order our pre-dinner drinks/cocktails to kick off the evening. We were interested in the same promotion - 3 cocktails for RM80 before 8pm. This time round, Ms Yoishi took our order. She mentioned we can only order the said promotion provided we purchase 3 bottles of spirit priced at RM990. We were shocked to know this as we ordered the earlier snacks from the same Happy Hour menu – the exact same page. We asked for the restaurant manager immediately and he came to clarify that we can order the cocktails. It will be a better experience for us should the service team for that night were briefed properly. The Food – Quick review Chow Kit Fish & Chips – Highly recommended if you dine there! Kambing Kuzi – This was nice but not WOW. Ikan Assam Pedas – Can do better. Pucuk Paku – I can taste the sadness in this dish, stir fry in tears. Ayam Kampung Emas (which was highly recommended) – It was so salty I thought I was drowned in the ocean for a second. We shared this information with the server to let kitchen staff try if they felt the same and it was taken off from our bill because they felt they were licking salt too I supposed? Another disappointment with this dish was it was to be served with Chow Kit’s signature house-made sambal. Chicken came but no sambal and when we asked for it, Ms Yoishi said “It’s the same sambal as the Cracker.” (the bar snacks we were having). Perhaps the menu should read “Crispy kampung chicken, served with our signature house-made sambal hijau & sambal merah ONLY IF YOU HAVEN’T HAD OUR SAMBAL &CRACKER BAR SNACKS”. Do note that we were given side plates (sharing plates) only AFTER we request for it. More disappointment right there. Overall food taste/experience: 4.7/10 The Salvage The hotel did a great job in hiring Ms Rachel whom has been a God-sent to us that evening. She speaks clearly and very polite and knows exactly what she was doing. And I thank her for that. Final Words I do not usually write reviews because what/how does it matters? Or what do I expect out of it. Or perhaps I just don’t care. But The Chow Kit, I am rooting for you. Please improve.

There is no doubt that The Prestige Hotel is an awesome hotel but what is more interesting is the food they serve there at their The Glass House Restaurant.

Pasta lovers could go for the Smoked Duck Carbonara, a beautiful blend of creamy sauce with smoky Duck meat. Cooked al-dente, the Pasta is imbued with addictive smokiness as well as creaminess... creamy-rich but not overly so.

Although the crust looked a little pale, the savory pies are greatly enjoyed by the young and elderly. The colonial pork pie and the curry chicken pie with a little bit of spicy heat are popular choices.

The noodle dish has the quintessential flavor, as well as heaps of ingredients like Shrimps, Vege, Pork and loads of Deep Fried Pork Lard. Together with Sambal, the dish was tummy-filling and satisfying at the same time. Not that it was outstanding but more than decent enough for a usual lunch fix.

We decided to go for the classic Cantonese dish - Char Hor Fun (RM 7.90) after saw it is being put as one of the recommended dish. It was a good choice indeed. The Char Hor Fun comes with a decent wok scent along with an aromatic egg in the starchy gravy. If we were to give a rating, it would be one of the above average taste Char Hor Fun we tasted in Penang.

Many come here for their signature Polo Bun (RM 3.20), which is freshly baked by the owner. Although it looks appealing with its golden and crumbly crust, it lacks both the crisp texture and buttery scent which we were looking for. Its saviour actually came from the cheese slices and turkey ham, which we added at RM 1 and RM 1.50 respectively.

Try their Energy Black Sesame Paste , served hot, the thick and rich dessert managed to wow me. It may seem deceptively simple and ordinary but believe me, the flavor was robust, with its velvety smooth texture, it just slides down the throat in a jiffy, leaving a very strong but delightful after-taste in the palate. It was not sweet, with a hint of natural bitterness from the toasted Sesame seeds. Yes, it was that good,

That week when we were there, the sticks marked in Red are priced at RM1.00. The Green ones are priced at RM1.50 and the Blue ones are priced at RM2.50 each stick. There are some ingredients which were stuck with 2 sticks. The tiger prawns had 2 blue sticks stuck on it, so each tiger prawn costs RM5.00. So, if you do not want to break your wallet, remember to always count the number of sticks you and your family / friends took.

Overall, I wouldn’t say McQuek’s satay celup is fantastic but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t good. The satay sauce here is adequately thick with just the right balance of sweet and spicy. It’s a crowd-pleaser alright. As for the ingredients, the real meat and seafood skewers are satisfyingly fresh. The processed food items on the other hand taste exactly as expected so no surprise or disappointment there. Some of the more memorable items we had were the cockles (I had dozens of it alone), bacon and prawns.
