Unlike most nasi kukus with ayam goreng berempah stalls in Klang Valley that only operate during certain hours, Ilham Nasi Kukus‘ is available for most of the day. That makes Ilham the go-to place for this specialty food without having to guess whether they are open.

If your budget allows, I highly recommend that you go for the CKT with Udang Harimau CKT @ RM10.50. Besides being significantly larger and meatier than the white prawns, the tiger prawns also tasted sweeter with a firmer bite. I’d say the extra RM5 is worth paying for.

My Nasi Dagang with Gulai Ikan Raja Berangkat @ RM13 was equally delicious. The firm yet fluffy texture of the rice is faultless while the fish lives up to its name – fit for a king. I also had the A.P.A (Apa Pun Ada) drink @ RM3.50 but I found the taste a tad watered down. Refill is only 50 cents though.

Lauk options are super basic but absolutely mind-blowing: piping hot spring chicken that seem to disappear within minutes each time they’re brought to the serving tray and gulai kawah (sometimes in mutton ribs form, other times in daging tetel form). Sometimes there’s also a gigantic pot of soup brewing right beside the gigantic pot of bubbling gulai kawah.

Their signature Nasi Pak Man (RM9.20) comes in a standard serving of rice, fried chicken, cucumber, sambal and gravy. You can also opt for extra Ayam Pericik (RM6.90), Daging Bakar (RM5.50) or Keropok Goreng (RM2.40) to make it a more satisfying experience. Although it looks pretty normal, the overall combination of thick and aromatic gravy coupled with fried chicken and sambal was still delicious.

Visited this place for Kelanta nasi dagang due to Ho Chiak recommendation, but my mom and dad who are from Kelantan does not approved of it. The chicken is alright, but the curry isn't authentic (more like curry powder). As for nasi dagang, it doesn't taste quite like it for me.

On the other hand, their Chicken Sate's were nice, though not the best that I have eaten and I am very sure that many would be able to vouch for this. I think it is the brand name that sells itself now more than the quality of the Sate's. The Sate's have definitely shrunk in size over the years but the taste has been consistent. I would rate their Chicken Sate's at 8/10

For something a bit more unusual than our all-time-favorite Asam Pedas, we savored the King’s Curry Fish Head (RM70.75). The garoupa fish is fresh with a firm and sweet flesh. Paired with the thick and creamy curry well-spiced up, the fish and vegetable is deliciously delectable. The curry was so yummy that I even find myself spooning the gravy and drenching my rice with it.

Verdict: Hits and misses, it was a decent Peranakan meal with most of the dishes we had were brilliantly done and capable to please our palate. Some dishes could be better with minor tweaks. Comfortable dining environment and friendly service. Recommended: Acar Rampai, King’s Curry Fish Head, Ayam Pongteh, Telur Belada, Sambal Fried Paku and Crispy Popiah.

Chicken Rendang (S), 20.66 ringgit. The Chicken Rendang was awesome, really really tasty. I wished it came with more chicken pieces though – 2 pieces of chicken thigh and a drumstick was not enough to be shared between the two of us, lol but boy, was it da bomb! You’d get tender chicken meat, the kind that literally falls of the bone, soaked and packed with flavor. the rendang gravy was thick and packed with flavor. Yummmmm!

Nasi Ayam Kicap Sambal Gelek, 8 ringgit. I did not have an inkling of an idea of what to expect for but I knew for sure that I’d get rice and chicken, sweet deal. As you could see from the image above, the dish comes with 4,5 medium sized fried chicken coated with what I assume is the sambal gelek + rice + chili paste + cucumber. I am the kind of person that needs gravy for everything, including the rice, I like it a lil wet. I assume that people usually eat this dish dry but I was not use to it at all. So, I had to go back to the stall, to request for some extra. The sambal gelek was yummy. It basically was thick, dark gravy that was a lil spicy, a lil sweet. Add that in with some crispy chicken, rice and some heat from the chili paste? It was delicious.

I find Bob’s mee goreng by far the best (for me) in the Klang Valley now. I’ve had some at different restaurants and mamaks, but for RM5.00, none had tasted anything like Bob’s. It hits the spot for me – tangy with good wok hei (char fragrance) and it neither overly greasy or wet but pleasantly moist and tasty. A good balance of spiciness and sweetness too! At RM 5.00 per plate it is superb value for money. The portion easily sharable for 2 small eaters. The deep-fried flour fritters were fresh and there were generous amount of bean sprouts and bean curd thrown in.

It is becoming common to see famous name-brand hawker businesses expanding their business from one original outlet to having branches and for some, even taking the path of franchising. Whether the expansion are in the form of interstate – (Hameediayah, Lorong Seratus Tahun Penang Curry Mee, the Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul) or via branches (Nyonya Colors, Kin Kin Pan Mee, Murni Discovery), the cravings for our favourite food are getting more accessible and easily satisfied. A recent example would be the legendary Nasi Lemak Tanglin. This was actually surprising, more so when I found out they took the “foodtruck” route and of all places to park their truck, it was in my neighbourhood TTDI.

The satays, yummmmm. It was meaty, juicy, coated with a thin layer of something sweet and when you dunk it into that peanut sauce …. ooooo man, delicious! This is why I keep coming back for more. That is all there is to say about it. If I am not mistaken, each stick cost 1 Ringgit and this time we went for 15 sticks between us, 5 each.
