Penang is famous for its Peranakan culture, particularly the well-known Baba Nyonya community. Established in 1933 as a kuih-specializing factory, Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay expanded to include a storefront in 2016, showcasing a remarkable commitment to Nyonya kueh.
Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Kuih has earned the prestigious Bib Gourmand status in the 2023 Michelin Guide KL and Penang list.
Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay was where we headed for our fix of Nonya Kuehs. Having visited Jason’s Nonya House and still craving for Nonya fare, we found Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay a popular venue for koahs such as Kueh Lapis, Kueh Talam and Kueh Bengka.
The savouries (i to iv, vii) were really interesting, in particular i, iii and iv. II was really pretty too. Overall an interesting fusion experience, with much Indian influence.
Their tasting menu mainly revolves around the produce-driven concept, to recreate nostalgic flavours using bold innovative cooking methods.

One of the impressive dish here is Sambal Brinjal (RM 15). Its sambal is so addictive and delicious to the extent we could have the sambal with white rice solely. This dish is a real vindication of the tagline by the restaurant - authentic Nyonya food as the spices are used distinctively and the food will have a fair balance of sweet, spicy, sour and salty.
♥Verdict: It’s definitely a lovely evening with great food which scored up to my expectation, impeccable service and enjoyable ambiance. Java Tree might not a regular casual eating place but it is certainly one of the places you should consider when comes to special occasions.

East meets West with culinary aplomb at the new Java Tree restaurant, Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Hotel Penang, making it a notable outpost to dine in.
This is yet the best White Curry Noodle I have had in Penang, noodle was perfectly cooked with tasty soup "white color" (optional addition of extra chili), the bowl comes with Sotong slices, Fresh cockels as well as QQ Duck blood (instead of Pork blood). Another dish, the 白斩鸡 Deboned Boiled Chicken with Soy Sauce is definitely a must try, one of the best 滑鸡 I have ever tried.
Hola! The transformation is done and there comes a reddish colour of curry mee. It emits a strong essence of curry taste and a pleasant aroma, with the spiciness level can be adjusted depending on the amount of chilli paste you have added. Beware though as too much of the chilli paste may cause choking as it is real spciy! That is why they named it Hot Bowl!
Lagenda House & Cafe is a hotel-cum-restaurant at Campbell Street (Lebuh Campbell).
Among the mains, an interesting choice is the beef bakar, served along with an array of condiments in a wooden congkak set. One will be able to sample a ton of elements: marinated sirloin beef, blue pea rice, kawah curry, homemade kerabu and condiments of local ulam. The dish is richly flavored in local spices but the beef needed slightly more tenderness. Beef bakar and kawah curry RM24 with blue pea rice wrapped in banana leaf
Here's the location.
One of the most famous Penang dishes of all time is the Nasi Kandar. In this video, we headed over to Deens Maju Nasi Kandar in Georgetown, Penang to have a taste of this incredible dish.
Overall, it was an excellent lunch that I really enjoyed it and worth waiting 40 minutes for it. Hahahaha!! Delicious food deserves the long wait, I guess.
The Spicy Fried Chicken was well seasoned with spices
I was really excited to discover Nasi Lemuni (RM 10) is available here. Prepared freshly from lemuni leaves planted at the compound of Jawi House, together with blue telang flower then flavoured with garlic, ginger, lemongrass and coconut milk, the rice is unique on its taste. It exhibits a mild herbal scent, with a minimum hint of bitterness derived from the lemuni after the sweetness from the spices. A subtle flavour and definitely enjoyable.
Environment here is nice, it has the Jawi-Peranakan touch to it.
If you tire of hawker food in Penang, and want a unique fine-dining Penang experience – we cannot recommend gēn 根 enough. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
The first main was Pumpkin Porridge. We spooned our way around the bowl filled with pumpkin porridge, along with chicken floss, white fish, puff rice, kampung egg yolk, braised peanuts, and spring onions. The clever play of condiments so essential in Chinese porridge combined well to offer a light yet fulfilling dish.
Threadfin with fermented Cabbage finished with White Peppercorn broth and Coriander Oil. A dish that we could enjoy meaty, succulent fish with delicious broth.
Overall, this restaurant is dedicated to those seeking for delicious and nostalgic Nyonya food. For me, the dishes here reminded me of my granny’s cooking. This is the place that I would regularly come back for Nyonya food.
Equally nice was the Mee Suah Ayam Merah, it did not possess the unpleasant fermented funky flavor but instead, it was well-seasoned and the Chicken was tender as well. The only setback was we took a while to photo-shoot the dish and the Mee Suah turned soggy.
Overall, the food here tasted good while the portion of the food was generous. Price was also reasonable. For those that want to try the food from the land of Borneo, this is the place to be.
Their signature Baba & Nyonya High Tea Set is probably the best way to kick start, it allows diners to order 5 items from the Kuih selection. We had Ubi Kayu Kukus, Kuih Seri Muka, Yam Cake, Kuih Kacang Merah and Kuih Bengka. My personal favorite was the Ubi Kayu Kukus, which was firm but bold with Tapioca flavor.
We particularly like the signature bubur cha cha, a medley of sweet potatoes prepared with fresh coconut milk and a nice sweetness of palm sugar.
Foodies, we highly recommend you guys pay Nyonya Palazzo a visit!
My Own Cafe is a family-run cafe that specializes in Penang Laksa since 2013. They may look assuming to some, but they are actually listed in the Michelin Guide. We ordered the Assam Laksa, Nyonya Lemak Laksa, and their spring roll.
Delicious Assam Laksa with lots of fish meat. This is our hot favourite. Will remember this for our next trip.
The revisit today of 48Holiao to Soo Guan Restoran is introducing the nostalgic taste of classic Hainanese Chicken Chop and also the new dish Nasi Sambal Udang Meleleh that is yet to show on the menu.
The Butter Kaya Toast (RM 5.50) was good - soft, fluffy and not too sweet. The only downside was the expensive price tag of RM 5.50 for breads. We were disappointed no traditional Hainan coffee though.
The highlight of the meal was probably Soo Guan Hainanese Chicken Chop... boneless Chicken thigh with batter fried till perfection and served with home-made Hainanese sauce.... which carried the unique, discernible Worcestershire sauce with a hint of Tomato. We were happy to see Onion slices on top of the Chicken Chop... which is deemed to be one of the important elements for Hainanese Chicken Chop. Great flavors, juicy Chicken but the portion can be a little larger
I feel that the Roti Canai Ayam Special suites its name for being special, haha !
Kareem Pasembur Rojak is definitely a must-try if you come to Penang! Pasembur, also known as Rojak Mamak also known in the southern regions of Peninsula Malaysia, is one of Malaysia's popular street snacks!
The much talked-about Kareem Pasembur is located at Union Street, next to Standard Chartered Bank. Open for lunch until 6pm.
The latter which has spicy beehoon with prawns, tofu, and bunga kantan (ginger torch flower) is given a fresh finish with droplets of calamansi lime juice.
Both Nyonya Kerabu Bee Hoon and Nyonya Lam Mee were good but the Kerabu Bee Hoon fared better. They were very generous with the toppings, every mouthful of the Vermicelli Noodles carried some dried Shrimp. The additional touch of Shallots and a squeeze Lime introduced a refreshing layer to the dish. Everything was well-seasoned and the flavor combo was bold and delicious; probably one of the best Kerabu Bee Hoon I've tasted.
It was a good start with Assam Laksa Kerabu, it was a concoction made from those key Assam Laksa ingredients like Cucumber, Onions, Torched Ginger, Mint Leaves; it tasted quite similar to Assam Laksa sans the Noodles and Shrimp Paste. The Kiam Hu Kut Curry was okay but it lacked the 'X' factor, as though it was just an ordinary curry with a hint of Salted Fish. The Ulam Kacang Botol was a disappointment, we were expecting uncut, raw Winged Beans but it turned out to be a measly portion with Pineapples, Cucumber and some Cherry Tomatoes; the Sambal Belacan was not any impressive either. Inche Kabin tasted fine but for Rm 30 (just a Chicken Thigh/ 6 pieces), we thought it was a rip-off.
