I had the Mamee in Kuah Lodeh, which is the creamy, coconut-rich gravy that is usually served with lontong (compressed rice) – only they replaced it with noodles, of course! Portions were generous; there was plenty of shrimp and tofu to soak up the delicious broth, topped with half a boiled egg. The noodles were springy with a slight bite.

One of our first stops was Mamee Jonker House... who doesn't love the blue iconic Mamee Monster? Peranakan Place - Jonker Street Restaurant

54, Jalan Hang Jebat 75200 Malacca Malaysia

In the 16th centuries, the Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore has witnessed the mingling of cultures between the early Chinese immigrants with the Malays, Indian and Indonesian. The Straits-born Chinese, or the Peranakans, emerged out of this ‘melting pot’ with a set of customs, cultures, language, architecture, cuisine and values wholly their own. Their colourful speech, ornate full-scale ceremonies and distinctive terrace houses reflect this rich medley of influences. The Peranakans are celebrated for their cuisine, whose main ingredients used are Chinese enriched with the blend of a host of culinary styles. This wealth of heritage has been well preserved at Peranakan Place.

The satays here at Xiang Ji Satay House had a nice lean to fat ratio; they were tender, juicy and flavorful. I especially loved the pork satay, which comes with alternate chunks of meat and thin strips of fat. The fats were nicely crisp, as they get grilled over the hot charcoal embers.

The charcoal stove grilled pork skewers were spot on, well marinated with a cut of fat sandwiched in the middle that provide sufficient “moist” to the palate. I like the peanut sauce with appetizing hint of sourness (pineapple is added, I assumed again LOL) and would beat the Kajang satay’s peanut sauce.
