I was really excited to discover Nasi Lemuni (RM 10) is available here. Prepared freshly from lemuni leaves planted at the compound of Jawi House, together with blue telang flower then flavoured with garlic, ginger, lemongrass and coconut milk, the rice is unique on its taste. It exhibits a mild herbal scent, with a minimum hint of bitterness derived from the lemuni after the sweetness from the spices. A subtle flavour and definitely enjoyable.

One will be able to sample a ton of elements: marinated sirloin beef, blue pea rice, kawah curry, homemade kerabu and condiments of local ulam. An art gallery and a restaurant, Kesum Art Restaurant is one of the perfect spots for visual art lovers. The newly opened restaurant at Stewart Lane offers a menu featuring Southern Malaysian favorites; diners can have a simple tour at the art gallery on first floor and move on to lunch at the restaurant one floor lower. The restaurant is simple with only 5 tables available; not only seats are limited but they have limited quantity for their offering too (only 30 sets available daily). Exceptional food quality but sluggish service, it took them more than 40 minutes to serve our orders. The heat-intolerant be forewarned- while the place is fully air-conditioned, the temperature is usually kept at room temperature (approx. 28'C). But if you have great interest in both arts and Southern Malaysian cuisine, this is the place to go... without breaking your budget. Kesum Art Restaurant occupies a corner unit at Stewart Lane, right next to Chulia Lane.

While both Penang and Malacca are known to have Peranakan descendants, the culture can be totally different and that... includes the food too. It's quite uncommon for Peranakan restaurants to serve Malaccan-Peranakan food but this newly opened Peranakan Passion has decided to take a leap of faith. Flip the menu and you will notice quite a few Peranakan dishes that are not common to Penang (otherwise in Malacca)- Ayam Pongteh, Ayam Buah Keluah, Itik Tim etc; the second thing that might strike you would be the price points.... a little higher than usual. But the air-conditioned cafe has a decent setup- comfortable and homey, with some Peranakan elements adorning the walls. We have managed to try a few signature dishes on our visit; while we could not find any fault with the dishes, we did not think they were impressive... probably we have got accustomed to the local Penang Peranakan flavors.

Hokkien Mee (Penang Prawn Mee, RM10.90) is my yardstick for all restaurants that serve Penang hawker food. I have to say it’s pretty darn good for a pork free version. The generous amount of toppings you get is reflected in the price. You hardly see any restaurant that willingly gives large prawns (fresh ones too!) on top of the sliced prawns in a bowl of prawn mee nowadays. Like any authentic Hokkien Mee in Penang, the chili paste is a must, as it adds a good depth of flavor to the soup.

Instead of devouring the Roti Bakar with the Half Boiled Eggs, I decided to try on Roti Canai and they worked well like a magic charm.
