I was really excited to discover Nasi Lemuni (RM 10) is available here. Prepared freshly from lemuni leaves planted at the compound of Jawi House, together with blue telang flower then flavoured with garlic, ginger, lemongrass and coconut milk, the rice is unique on its taste. It exhibits a mild herbal scent, with a minimum hint of bitterness derived from the lemuni after the sweetness from the spices. A subtle flavour and definitely enjoyable.

Among the mains, an interesting choice is the beef bakar, served along with an array of condiments in a wooden congkak set. The Butter Kaya Toast (RM 5.50) was good - soft, fluffy and not too sweet. The only downside was the expensive price tag of RM 5.50 for breads. We were disappointed no traditional Hainan coffee though.

The highlight of the meal was probably Soo Guan Hainanese Chicken Chop... boneless Chicken thigh with batter fried till perfection and served with home-made Hainanese sauce.... which carried the unique, discernible Worcestershire sauce with a hint of Tomato. We were happy to see Onion slices on top of the Chicken Chop... which is deemed to be one of the important elements for Hainanese Chicken Chop. Great flavors, juicy Chicken but the portion can be a little larger

Overall, Soo Guan is one of the few restaurants in Penang that serves classical “Silver Spoon” Hainanese Chicken Chop. The food was good and the price was also reasonable. It would be great if they can expand the menu in the future so that customers can have a wider selection.

Equally nice was the Mee Suah Ayam Merah, it did not possess the unpleasant fermented funky flavor but instead, it was well-seasoned and the Chicken was tender as well. The only setback was we took a while to photo-shoot the dish and the Mee Suah turned soggy.

The Kolo Mee really resembles the one we had in Sarawak, especially the original version. Its unique al-dente noodle covered with its unique sauce, along with a dash of pepper renders it delectable. The soy sauce version is equally toothsome, attributed to the different than usual soy sauce being used.

The Asam Laksa is awesomely good. We love the asam laksa so much and we ordered another bowl of it. The asam laksa comes with the light sourish blend not overpowering and yet the broth is thick. You can find generous portion of mackerel fish and the noodles are slurplicious good.

Aboo Backer's Roti Canai was exactly what I expected from an authentic one- hot, crispy and served with an array of lusciously rich Curries. Instead of devouring the Roti Bakar with the Half Boiled Eggs, I decided to try on Roti Canai and they worked well like a magic charm. The Chicken Curry went well with the Roti... slightly sweet but packed a Chili punch. The Beef Kurma was a little tough on texture but nevertheless, a good addition to the variety.
