It is peak autumn at Mount Takao, just an hour out from Tokyo. This is a pretty touristy place, means good transport, plenty of food and restaurant. There are some marvelous red leaves just in front of the station. We took the tram up, where the path are covered by red autumn trees. You could walk as well, but we are short on time. It is another 30-60 minutes walk up the peak depending on which path you take. We took no 3. The weather is perfect today, and we can see all the mountains. Fuji is slightly hidden with clouds at its top. Unpack our lunch from a bakery and enjoy the view. There is a restaurant up there as well. We went back on route no 1 and pass by a temple. Just in time for the last chair lift decent at 4.30pm and the sky starts to get dark.

Very beautiful mountain just about one hour away from the Tokyo city center. The mountain was still full of autumn colors! To save some time (go down before sunset) we took the cable car up and chairlift down. The chairlift was fantastic!

his day hike was much easier than I thought, coming from someone who’s not really into outdoor activities nor did much hiking before (I had a really tough time hiking Mt Batur in Bali). The different trails Mt Takao has meant you can choose according to your preferences and fitness levels. Each trail offers different experiences and sights, ranging from Biwa Waterfall (perhaps even a monk training under the waterfall if you’re lucky), to a monkey park, Yakuo-in Temple, etc. I enjoyed hiking through the quiet forests for Trail 3 – the silence through the forests was a welcome delight. That path also gently forced me to stay in the present moment and focus fully on my journey.

Hiking Mount Daisen on a drizzling and misty day. Less than 5 degree Celsius on early November rainy day. The mountain is really beautiful despite totally misty at the top. We went up on the Natsumaya mountain trail which took us less than 3 hours to reach the top, as most Japanese elders overtook us. We came down on the Gyoja trail which go through a beautiful birch autumn forest, Ogamiyama Shrine and Daisen Temple.

虽然一整天都下着毛毛细雨,搞到整个爬山的行程都冷飕飕的,而且给雾水笼罩着,都看不到山上的景色,但是也别有一番风味。下山的路布满各色秋叶,非常漂亮!

Where the town ends are several temples and shrines (the most prominent of which is Daisen-ji, the temple dedicated to the worship of the mountain itself), which mark the beginning of the trails. At first, the ascent was slow and gradual, winding through tunnels of trees aflame in the reds, oranges, and yellows of Mid-Autumn.

We get up close to the crater to view loads of poisonous gas spitting out from the crater, and occasionally you can view the blue color water at the bottom of the crater. The crater is pretty sensitive, as you might have to wait until the gas level is low enough to have a safe viewing near the edge of the crater. The walking path around the crater is off limit during my visit.

Mount Misen is a superb hike, offering 3 different route plus cable car. Do allocate at least 2.5h if you are fast, but I prefer to do it in 4h to take time to enjoy the view and take photos. Though the Misen Observatory has a great view, but my personal favorite is Komabayashi which is a big rock platform with much lesser crowd. We went up through the Momijidani Course and came down using Omoto Course.

Mount Rokko is close to the cities of Osaka and Kobe and to the hot springs of Arima Onsen. From the top of Mt. I believe the Autumn for Mount Unzen is in early November, so we are late with no red leafs left. The mountain is misty during our hike so we can't see the surrounding trails, and the trail vegetations are quite nice. Since we are short of time, we took the cable car up and hike the loop back to cable car station, for about 2 hours.

Homanzan is full of stairs and the path is well marked. There is a shrine and a big rock at the top, and a cabin rest area as well. The view is not bad, but sadly it is pretty cloudy today. The journey is pretty alright, and more adventurous as we explore a path down without stairs from a website.

We were up early to go to Shirakami sanchi mountain area and beyond, up the Tsugaru peninsula of Aomori province. Shirakami is the triangle on the south west (BLHS) of the map. Tsugaru is the large peninsula in the north west (TRHS).Odate is off the map, just south of the dotted yellow line that shows the border between Akita and Aomori. Shirakami Sanchi is pristine beech forest, and without doubt the most natural nature i have seen in Japan.
