The BBQ Pork Shrimp Wan Thun Mee is a big hit with diners. A small serving priced at RM6 had the noodles served in light black sauce with slices of barbeque pork, three wan thuns and vegetables. For a little extra spicy kick, add on condiments of pickled green chilies in soy sauce.

Polo Bun with Butter (菠萝油) – RM4.50, a very typical Hong Kong pastry. The top of the bun was covered with slightly sweet crust while the inner of the bun was stuffed with a piece of creamy butter. In Penang, it is so difficult to get Polo Butter Bun. That is the reason I came to this cafe to try out the bun. It is in fact one of their best-sellers and usually sold out by noon. The top crust was so nice and the bun was soft and warm. Having it with soft and creamy butter was simply satisfying. This bun is perfect when it is served warm.

The Char Koay Teow may not look much different from the others, but it was really delicious, fragrantly fried with lots of “wok-hei” flavour! We suspected the use of duck egg made the delectable plate even more fragrant. It didn’t leave a very greasy feel too. Much better than the one we had from an unknown stall in Pulau Tikus the previous day!

We placed our order and wait patiently for our food to be served. There are other foods available in the coffee shop too such as prawn noodle (known as Hokkien Mee in Penang), Lor Bak and etc.

Small bowl at RM 3.80 is really a good bargain. Filled with classic ingredients such as chicken feet, pig skin, pig intestine, herbal egg, special home blend garlic vinegar sauce and also chili paste. Love the starchy soup base with a bit of saltiness and sweetness to my liking as the amount of vinegar garlic is just nice and could be better if slightly stronger.

The gravy is definitely the one that makes Kim Leng loh mee unique. The thick gravy is flavourful and gives a bit hint of sweetness. It is very inviting. Next, KayaButter love its braised eggs, very well marinated. You can add extra ingredients as you like such as the chicken legs, braised eggs, meats and internal organs. Internal organs are not KayaButter’s favourite, so we ask them to exclude that in our loh mee. Oh ya, the loh mee also comes with pork’s skin.

When the bowl of rice is served in front of you, you can practically see the glittering surface of the pork glazed by the rich sauces. Noodles are deeply rooted in our culinary consciousness, there is no one size fits all. There are a lot of varieties on offer and they can come in different size, color, shape, texture as well as flavor. Typically, Pan Mee (a type of Hakka Noodles) is served in the shape of thin, round and smooth texture but Ah Ma Pan Mee, a newly opened Pan Mee specialist at 4th Street Club (Tye Sin Street) decides to do things differently. Using traditional recipe from Pahang, the noodle joint offers Pan Mee in its own style. While the soup bases and condiments are similar, the noodles stand out. They come in irregularly fat-round shape with al-dente (slightly chewy and bouncy) texture. The menu is not big but the air-conditioned restaurant offers a comfortable dining space for hungry diners to have a quick fix; definitely a place where fans of Pan Mee should check out.

Kio-Ka serves cook-to-order Koay Teow Th'ng, the true blue Penangites would understand what it means. Instead of just pouring the broth over the noodles, the condiments such as minced Pork (and anything applicable) are freshly added to the broth before bringing it to boil. The result is a meatier broth with in-depth flavors. But for those who are not in favor of the Porky-element might not be happy. Kio-Ka's version comes with heavy Pork element as well as grease (Lards), the meat flavor was bold and strong. Though this is entirely personal preference, I'd personally prefer the ordinary ones.

Either soup or dry, the noodle tastes great. But if you are opting for the dry one you should be glad to know that they use a high grade of dark soy sauce to flavor the noodles. If you ask me, I would prefer the dry version more because I am able to taste the smoothness of the koay teow better somehow.

What I do not like, and find it strange in an unpleasant way, is the minced mantis prawns. As I've mentioned, in the beginning I didn't even know it is mantis prawns. I thought it was minced meat, which also would make it a first ever for Hokkien Mee. No, it's mantis prawns. But the mantis prawns have an odd taste that is disagreeable to me. It doesn't taste fresh. Yes, that's the thing. It tastes like something that has gone bad. My wife described it as "minced meat marinated in tau joo". Maybe it is a delicacy and a speciality of this stall, but the taste puts me off.

As a result of hours of boiling to extract the essence of the crustacean, the Mantis Prawn Hokkien Mee (Rm 6 for Small) comes in a broth with orange hue; each spoonful of this saturated broth was a burst of seafood sweetness. Every bit of it was a joy to savor. Additionally, copious amount of Mantis Prawns was added to the noodles, the crumbly yet with a slight resilient Mantis Prawns definitely amps up the flavor of dish by adding a more layered dimension. However, the place will be throng with patrons during weekends, do head to the place earlier to avoid disappointment.
