Polo Bun with Butter (菠萝油) – RM4.50, a very typical Hong Kong pastry. The top of the bun was covered with slightly sweet crust while the inner of the bun was stuffed with a piece of creamy butter. In Penang, it is so difficult to get Polo Butter Bun. That is the reason I came to this cafe to try out the bun. It is in fact one of their best-sellers and usually sold out by noon. The top crust was so nice and the bun was soft and warm. Having it with soft and creamy butter was simply satisfying. This bun is perfect when it is served warm.

The Original Dried Noodles has a mix of minced Meat, soft-boiled Egg and Anchovies. The texture seemed to be a little softer than the usual Pan Mee and the seasoning was not as bold as we would have hoped. But the addition of their lip-burningly hot Chili flakes would spice things up. Specialty Spicy Soup Noodles on the other hand, reminds us of Tom Yum-flavored Pan Mee, though not that strong, the flavors were bolder than the original version. For sides, Mini Cocktail Sausages gave us a good impression, the texture was good and the smoky-factor was there; for an extra top up of Rm 2, we thought it was of good value.

The Char Koay Teow may not look much different from the others, but it was really delicious, fragrantly fried with lots of “wok-hei” flavour! Small bowl at RM 3.80 is really a good bargain. Filled with classic ingredients such as chicken feet, pig skin, pig intestine, herbal egg, special home blend garlic vinegar sauce and also chili paste. Love the starchy soup base with a bit of saltiness and sweetness to my liking as the amount of vinegar garlic is just nice and could be better if slightly stronger.

The gravy is definitely the one that makes Kim Leng loh mee unique. The thick gravy is flavourful and gives a bit hint of sweetness. It is very inviting. Next, KayaButter love its braised eggs, very well marinated. You can add extra ingredients as you like such as the chicken legs, braised eggs, meats and internal organs. Internal organs are not KayaButter’s favourite, so we ask them to exclude that in our loh mee. Oh ya, the loh mee also comes with pork’s skin.

The bowl contains several thin meat slices (肉片) which I feel is reasonably good. There is also some braised chicken feet (卤鸡脚), but there is little meat and I don't think it really helps in terms of flavor. Other ingredients in the gravy are a braised egg (卤蛋), pork lard (猪油渣), bean sprouts (豆芽) and fried onions. In particular, I like the use of pork lard as it gives a delightful appeal to the dish.

The price of the food here was considered reasonable too as the noodle portion and wontons were larger than usual . Potentially one of the most expensive Wan Ton Mees in Penang, Wan Ton Mee House's comes with a splash of own-developed Egg-gravy to be mixed and eaten with the noodles. On top of that, Wan Ton Mee House's rendition of Wan Ton Mee sees a serving of addictive Pork Lards, crispy Deep Fried Wan Ton/ Dumplings, dressed in a luscious gravy. The texture of the noodles was alright, but they could be more generous with the Chilies. Sambal will only be given upon request, which is a nuisance for chili-lovers like us. All in all, we thought the noodles were of decent-quality; definitely not something that we would want to go all out for it but neither do we against it.

Noodles are deeply rooted in our culinary consciousness, there is no one size fits all. There are a lot of varieties on offer and they can come in different size, color, shape, texture as well as flavor. Typically, Pan Mee (a type of Hakka Noodles) is served in the shape of thin, round and smooth texture but Ah Ma Pan Mee, a newly opened Pan Mee specialist at 4th Street Club (Tye Sin Street) decides to do things differently. Using traditional recipe from Pahang, the noodle joint offers Pan Mee in its own style. While the soup bases and condiments are similar, the noodles stand out. They come in irregularly fat-round shape with al-dente (slightly chewy and bouncy) texture. The menu is not big but the air-conditioned restaurant offers a comfortable dining space for hungry diners to have a quick fix; definitely a place where fans of Pan Mee should check out.

It's no secret that Butterworth is home to a few good restaurants that serve delicious Poached Chicken and one of the oldest names in this "expertise" is May Fong Restaurant at Kampung Benggali, Butterworth. It's impossible to miss the place during lunch hours, the place is often thronged with regular patrons especially during weekends. Families bringing the old and young is a common sight here, it is possibly the de-facto dining place for those living in the neighborhood. The menu is small here, in fact, only Poached Chicken and Wan Ton.... with Rice or Ipoh-styled Hor Fun (with add-ons like blanched Sprouts or Vegetables) but more than enough to entice the crowd. The best time to visit would be around 11 am or expect to wait for at least half an hour before your orders are served.

Relau 88 Laksa is one good secret, the Assam Laksa stall housed within a garden supply shop at a corner house along Jalan Paya Terubong at Relau has been serving pleasurable Assam Laksa for months. Since it shares the same place as the garden supply store, the place is surrounded with charming flowers but it does get stuffy under the sultry hot weather. Positive reputation spread through words of mouth, the place is now thronged with patrons in the know. The trademark of Kham Kee has always been their special handmade beef balls. They always have that bouncy al dente bite that you can hardly find elsewhere and they were bigger in size than others. Their chili sauce was also superb as it was a handed down recipe for decades. It was sassy recipe with hints of red chilies, bird eyes chilies and ginger with some pinches of salt. It was fiery spicy but I love it! The dish would come with a generous garnishing of chopped Chinese celery and some oil drained fried garlic. It was a simple yet fulfilling hot bowl of noodles on a rainy day~

Their sliced beef (the meat) was not too tender in my opinion and they could need some improvements on that, but their beef meat ball is a must-try in my opinion, I just love how bouncy and springy the texture is and it works well with their home made chili sauce. I have always asked to mix Koay Teow (rice cake strips) and Yellow Noodles to get the better texture. Highly recommended.

The very-hyped Thai Boat Noodle trend in Penang seen a few new opening of Thai Boat Noodle outlets but the market leader- Boat Noodles did not respond to the trend. We believe the trend has subsided for now but recently, The Original Boat Noodles has decided to expand their business operations to Penang. The first branch by the brand is now open at Sunway Carnival Mall and relentless queues were spotted during our trips there. It was not easy for us either, we gladly joined the queue and it took us approximately 15 minutes to clear it. The Thai menu is Boat Noodles-centric with a few sides while the interior decor is minimal and a lot of tables (distance between tables is small). If I were to nitpick, there are rooms for improvements- the floor was not properly cleaned, utensils were greasy; the only thing praise-worthy was the crowd-management. Find Boat Noodles on the Second Floor of Sunway Carnival Mall, a stone's throw distance away from Hanamaru and Yoshinoya.

An exceptionally popular and fairly casual noodle-specialist hailed from central Malaysia has recently expanded its business operations to Penand and has finally swung opened its doors to the public. Go Noodle House's first Penang branch is strategically located in Gurney Plaza (7th floor/ opposite to SenQ). Beelines of long queues have been spotted for the past few days. The brand has gained strong reputation in terms of quality and wallet-friendly price tags. Go Noodle House is also famed for its signature clear-soup noodles, finished with Chinese Wine. The no-frills restaurant offers a simple home-styled cooking menu that features two types of noodle dishes- Clear Soup and Pan Mee (available from Rm 9.90). We were certainly impressed with the food quality, but we thought their service level could be further improved (or perhaps, the restaurant is still new and the staff lacked of experience and training).

The dry version is drenched with think and starchy gravy, while the soup version is served with conventional wan thun mee savoury soup. Personally, the al-dente noodles are an enjoyment in biting, and I would prefer the soup version over the dry one, as I am not a real fan of starchy gravy wan thun mee. However, this is a pretty subjective matter and it should up to individual's preference.

HB Noodle House's signature White Curry Mee was quite good... creamy and savory; even better with a splash of its home-made Chili paste. It had every box ticked.

As for the dried pan mee, I felt the taste is slightly blend but after added with some soup in it, the taste makes it more flavourful.

The name "Ko Cha Mee" brings evocative images as one would be able to link that to the delicacies we used to enjoy during earlier days. Housed in one of the corner business lots at Raja Uda, Ko Cha Mee is a noodle specialist that offers something similar to "Lam-Mee". For the uninitiated, Lam Mee is closely linked to Nyonya families and often served during birthday celebrations as the dish signifies longevity; the flavorful broth is usually cooked with Prawns and Pork Ribs/ Chicken, complemented by a dash of home-made Sambal Belacan. Ko Cha Mee offers such a platform to savor the flavors of the past, but if you are looking for a variety, this is not a place for you as the small menu only specializes in noodles (with optional add-ons). Albeit the catchy name, we did not find the food outstanding nor worth the distance to travel all the way to Raja Uda; probably a regular Lam Mee in the neighborhood is on par with theirs.

During our visit, we had a bowl of Jumbo Curry Mee (RM 13.90). It did not disappoint, as the Jumbo Curry Mee still carry their aromatic curry soup traits, and the addition of various ingredients such as roasted pork, cockles, beancurd skin were complementing the noodles well. Add on some of their signature chili paste for a more spicy sensation.

A proud winner of the Penang Hawker Masters Competition in 2012, this Curry Mee specialist has gained huge attention since then. They started out at Perak Road, right next to Old Town White Coffee, subsequently to Reservoir Garden Air Itam and now, a new shop at The Golden Triangle, Relau. It may be shadowed by those flashy food eateries in the vicinity so do be extra careful when searching for this place. The menu is rather small but covers some of the best local delights such as Penang Curry Mee, Nyonya Lam Mee, Koay Teow Th'ng and Nasi Lemak; with options to have add-ons. Solid staple food that can't go out of fashion, this place is ideal for a quick, inexpensive meal sans the usual coffee shop crowd.

Like most of the Koay Teow Theng, the bowl comes with flat noodles / vermicelli, fish balls and a generous quantity of minced meat. However, they make a difference to their Koay Teow Theng by adding lemon juices to the soup, creating a zesty flavoured soup. It does not create a wow factor but the resultant soup is more refreshing than usual, and registered a new taste compared to the common Koay Teow Theng we had. If you prefer an usual Koay Teow Theng, just informed the lady beforehand.

We are equally impressed with the Dumplings (RM 6 for 3 pieces too). It is humongous in size and come with generous filling. The chef also delicately shove in a significant quantity of Chinese water chestnut that give the dumpling an unique and pleasant texture.

Loy Kee's Wan Ton Mee was springy but the winning factor was the expertly mixed sauce. It has the quintessential Soy sauce fragrance with a sleek sweetness. With a little lard, the combo was most delicious
