Polo Bun with Butter (菠萝油) – RM4.50, a very typical Hong Kong pastry. The top of the bun was covered with slightly sweet crust while the inner of the bun was stuffed with a piece of creamy butter. In Penang, it is so difficult to get Polo Butter Bun. That is the reason I came to this cafe to try out the bun. It is in fact one of their best-sellers and usually sold out by noon. The top crust was so nice and the bun was soft and warm. Having it with soft and creamy butter was simply satisfying. This bun is perfect when it is served warm.

The Char Koay Teow may not look much different from the others, but it was really delicious, fragrantly fried with lots of “wok-hei” flavour! We suspected the use of duck egg made the delectable plate even more fragrant. It didn’t leave a very greasy feel too. The place was in in full swing on Sunday morning circa 10.00am and we were lucky to secure the last table or else we might need to wait table for hours according to Ken. The gravy is definitely the one that makes Kim Leng loh mee unique. The thick gravy is flavourful and gives a bit hint of sweetness. It is very inviting. Next, KayaButter love its braised eggs, very well marinated. You can add extra ingredients as you like such as the chicken legs, braised eggs, meats and internal organs. Internal organs are not KayaButter’s favourite, so we ask them to exclude that in our loh mee. Oh ya, the loh mee also comes with pork’s skin.

There is also some braised chicken feet (卤鸡脚), but there is little meat and I don't think it really helps in terms of flavor. On top of that, Wan Ton Mee House's rendition of Wan Ton Mee sees a serving of addictive Pork Lards, crispy Deep Fried Wan Ton/ Dumplings, dressed in a luscious gravy. The texture of the noodles was alright, but they could be more generous with the Chilies. Sambal will only be given upon request, which is a nuisance for chili-lovers like us. Instead of just pouring the broth over the noodles, the condiments such as minced Pork (and anything applicable) are freshly added to the broth before bringing it to boil. The result is a meatier broth with in-depth flavors. But for those who are not in favor of the Porky-element might not be happy. Either soup or dry, the noodle tastes great. But if you are opting for the dry one you should be glad to know that they use a high grade of dark soy sauce to flavor the noodles. If you ask me, I would prefer the dry version more because I am able to taste the smoothness of the koay teow better somehow.

The trademark of Kham Kee has always been their special handmade beef balls. They always have that bouncy al dente bite that you can hardly find elsewhere and they were bigger in size than others. Their chili sauce was also superb as it was a handed down recipe for decades. It was sassy recipe with hints of red chilies, bird eyes chilies and ginger with some pinches of salt. It was fiery spicy but I love it! The dish would come with a generous garnishing of chopped Chinese celery and some oil drained fried garlic. Their sliced beef (the meat) was not too tender in my opinion and they could need some improvements on that, but their beef meat ball is a must-try in my opinion, I just love how bouncy and springy the texture is and it works well with their home made chili sauce. I have always asked to mix Koay Teow (rice cake strips) and Yellow Noodles to get the better texture. Highly recommended.

What I do not like, and find it strange in an unpleasant way, is the minced mantis prawns. As I've mentioned, in the beginning I didn't even know it is mantis prawns. I thought it was minced meat, which also would make it a first ever for Hokkien Mee. No, it's mantis prawns. But the mantis prawns have an odd taste that is disagreeable to me. It doesn't taste fresh. Yes, that's the thing. It tastes like something that has gone bad. My wife described it as "minced meat marinated in tau joo". Maybe it is a delicacy and a speciality of this stall, but the taste puts me off.

As a result of hours of boiling to extract the essence of the crustacean, the Mantis Prawn Hokkien Mee (Rm 6 for Small) comes in a broth with orange hue; each spoonful of this saturated broth was a burst of seafood sweetness. Every bit of it was a joy to savor. Additionally, copious amount of Mantis Prawns was added to the noodles, the crumbly yet with a slight resilient Mantis Prawns definitely amps up the flavor of dish by adding a more layered dimension. However, the place will be throng with patrons during weekends, do head to the place earlier to avoid disappointment.

What caught my eye was this huge dummy prawn hanged on top of the stall! Just awesome gazing at it while drooling waiting to indugle a good delicous bowl of noodle.

Sin Kee promotes their Chili Pan Mee heavily; for those who feed on Chilies, there will be 3 different types of Chilies available (2 available for all diners while the remaining type is exclusively available for those with Chili Pan Mee as order). The Noodles were nicely done, slightly al-dente and resilient just the way I like. The soup was equally good, it was brimming with flavors. It was light on the palate but robust with the seafood-sweetness of Anchovies.

But everything comes with a price and that theory applies to Tung Kee's Koay Teow Th'ng as well, a basic bowl of Koay Teow Th'ng costs Rm 8.90 here while the premium ones would cost Rm 13.90 and Rm 35.90. Recently Yan Yam Cafe 炎茶餐室 – 炒叻沙/东炎面 added a touch of coffee shop dining to the scene with a handful of hawker stalls. One of the stalls offers an interesting dish of Fried Laksa. This fried base noodle is slightly spicy, sweet and sour with a distinct aromatic and pungent flavour, just like the popular Penang Assam Laksa soup noodle.

What I like best is either their Dry Laimen, dry style, serve with a giant mince meat ball, and slices of Grilled Honey Pork and half boil egg, or their Pork Belly Laimen, serve with herbal soup, braised pork belly, and slightly undercook (Japanese Style) hard boil egg and their loh bak.
