This popiah wrapper (skin) is very similar to a pancake or crepe because it is doughy, soft and much thicker than the usual thin popiah skin. My friend cannot get used to it and so she removed the skin from 3 segments and left them uneaten. I finished my popiah because I like to eat doughy pancakes. The jicama is cooked with fermented soybeans paste (taucu) as I found some fermented soybeans in the roll. I am ok with this popiah but will not order it again because I don't like the jicama that is too soggy.

Delicious platter filled with 5 types of food item - 5 spice chicken rolls (similar to ngo hiong), crispy popiah, prawn kerabu, chicken and shrimp wanton and deep fried dumplings (sui gao) with what I thought was salted egg yolk fillings in them but later, I noticed that the poster printed "cheesy fortune cookies" as one of the items so it must be that this dumpling is filled with cheese and not salted egg yolk.

Nasi Kunyit Served with Curry Chicken (RM 19.50) Not just that, we tried their Nasi Kunyit which is served together with the Curry Chicken. One can taste the fragrant taste of the nasi kunyit. Once, you drenched the creamy coconut-based curry into the rice, they are really good and addictive.

Sotong with Kangkong is a popular street food you can find in town. The dish is simple and easy to make with blanched brown cuttlefish and kangkung but the secret lies in the sauce.

The Nasi Kerabu Baba Fried Chicken (RM17.00), came with a serving of blue rice topped with sweet and spicy coconut sauce, half a hard-boiled salted egg, acar and salad, grated coconut, fish keropok, and fried chicken. The chicken was succulent on the inside, cripsy outside, and the acar added a sour twang to the overall sweet dish.

Cucur Udang (RM9.90 from the lunch menu) A balanced mix of shrimp and paste made for the perfect tenderness and crunchiness in any bite. Sweet and spicy homemade chilli sauce added an extra oomph to the delicious bite-sized awesomeness. Unconventional looking satays that actually taste good. What I adore about the dish was not the way it looks whatsoever, but rather the quality of the meat they used in each stick! Instead of throwing in fats every now and then to make up a stick of satay, they used only the flesh, all of which was nicely marinated, and then grilled to golden perfection.

Oooooman, if you love your laksa thick and milky with santan and packed with flavors – The Nyonya Laksa is for you. It is indulgingly fattening, I know but that is why it comes in a bowl smaller than the usual sizes, plus the fact that it sure is filling. I opted for the kuey teow + mee hoon noodle combination, which worked well with this dish. I could not stop slurping it all up. There were also shrimps, ‘kerang’, fish balls, eggs, bean sprouts and cucumber. Deliciousssssssss!

Lontong Set it is for me at MYR 13 nett. I requested for no sugar for my barley drink with ice. The gravy broth for this lontong is very creamy with coconut milk, rich with galangal taste and less salty than the one at AMAH. It has long beans, carrots, cabbages, jicamas and a half hard boiled egg with 8 compressed rice cubes. I returned the saucer of sambal immediately when it was served because it would be too flavourful and spicy for me if I eat the sambal as well.

In the 16th centuries, the Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore has witnessed the mingling of cultures between the early Chinese immigrants with the Malays, Indian and Indonesian. The Straits-born Chinese, or the Peranakans, emerged out of this ‘melting pot’ with a set of customs, cultures, language, architecture, cuisine and values wholly their own. Their colourful speech, ornate full-scale ceremonies and distinctive terrace houses reflect this rich medley of influences. The Peranakans are celebrated for their cuisine, whose main ingredients used are Chinese enriched with the blend of a host of culinary styles. This wealth of heritage has been well preserved at Peranakan Place.

Nasi Lemak Pandan Rendang Chicken at MYR 12.90+ (6% SST = MYR 13.67 nett). The Rendang gravy is tasty, creamy, not that salty and not too sweet. The sambal is not the sweet type but is a bit sourish so I like it. Can taste pandan and coconut milk in the rice so the taste reminded me of Seri Muka kuih.

My Personal Opinion The curry was the surprise for me as it turned out better than I expected. From the food and taste point of view, maybe not nearly as good as Nyonya Colors but still decent considering that you can get a truly great value meal from as little as RM13.80 that comes with a drink, main and dessert (kuih)...but on weekdays only (not sure if this promotion is still ongoing though since I had this quite some time back).

Nyonya Mee Siam, 10.90 ringgit. I liked the Mee Siam. It was yummy. The noodles had a lil sweetness to it that worked well with the chicken curry. The gravy was flavorful and packed with spices, when mixed with the sweetness from the noodles – it was positively appealing. The curry came with 4 tender, meaty bits of chicken, which was as good having it on its own as it was having it with the noodles. Overall, this was a good dish.
