Private Kitchen is gaining its popularity in Penang, especially when you want to cut the mainstream restaurants or over-rated franchised brands out there and proceed straight to the basic, traditional flavors; or merely satisfy the particular urge to have some classic home-cooked dishes. While Great Delight Kitchen (悦为食) may operate like an ordinary restaurant, it actually runs on a business model like Private Kitchen. Customization of menu can be arranged with prior notice- simply inform the proprietor on the budget and they are able to customize the menu accordingly. The server proudly shared with us that the existing Teo Chew-influenced menu only covers 5% of what the restaurant could actually offer; as long as you can name it, they can cook it. Tables are limited and with its strong customer base, it is highly recommended that you make advance booking before visiting the place (we visited 3 times without booking and were turned down). The damage for this meal was slightly over RM 100 (for 3 pax), not exactly a cheap meal but we were pleased with the quality.

The Pad Thai Seafood (RM 8.90) was impressive. It shares almost 70% similarities with the Pad Thai we had in Bangkok and the heat component was no joke. It put our mouth on fire and we had to take small pauses in between to give some resting period for our tongue.

Salted Egg Yolk Squid was the only dish that left us with the deepest impression, not that the Squid was huge in size but the Salted Egg Yolk element was bold. The 3-flavored Black Pomfret did not impress us from the appearance but it was in fact, skillfully cooked. The flesh was moist and soft while the outer parts of the fish were deep fried to a crisp... slathered with a sweet-savory sauce. Affordably priced at Rm 19.90 for a basic set (serves 2), budget watchers can now enjoy delicious Thai Steamboat at unbeatable price, well-complemented with sea breeze. The simple set includes some basic meat balls, greens and meat but those with a deeper pocket can always top up extra few dollars for the additional spread. Bangkok Garden BBQ is not air-conditioned and instead, it relies on the sea breeze so the best time to visit would probably in the evening. The Braised Pork On Rice (RM 4.00) in the menu immediately caught our attention. As the name suggests, this simple dish has piece of small braised pork topping the white rice, with its gravy diffuses into the rice slightly. While Taiwanese food can be common and familiar to Penangites, there are still some unconventional Taiwanese delicacies that are uncommonly found in Penang. This new kid on the block- Bei Tou Squid Snack (北投鱿鱼), a brand originates from Taiwan that serves fast-casual Taiwanese food; is housed at a quiet corner of The Golden Triangle at Relau, the Taiwanese chain brought along some of the special highlights directly from Taiwan. Unlike most Taiwanese joints around, Bei Tou does not offer a big menu but a series of carefully chosen Taiwanese delights.... so the indecisive will not be overwhelmed by selections. Notable highlights are Taiwanese street-snacks like Dumplings, Scallion Pancakes, braised Tofu, thickened Soup; often ordered over Rice or Noodles. Price points are low-middle range but serving portion is relatively small.

The Brown Marbled Grouper is one of the most-ordered dishes, we had ours steamed and served with premium Soy sauce. The fish was fresh with the most delicate flesh, the texture was addictively bouncy with a hint of seafood sweetness. It was good but could be better if it was served to us piping hot (did not come as hot as expected). The Octopus was alright, though we were a little underwhelmed with the portion and price, we thought the special sauce blended well with the Seafood (the winning factor was the subtle sweetness with a mild heat). If Rice is too mainstream, go for their Singaporean Bee Hoon. For Rm 5, we thought the portion was rather generous and the noodles were expertly cooked (and seasoned). Though there were some hits and misses, we were generally pleased with the food quality.

At the far end of Teluk Kumbar is a quiet fishing village named Gertak Sanggul; unlike Batu Ferringhi, Gertak Sanggul is a non-touristy place with no hotels, only local fishermen and pristine white beach, making it one of the famous places to picnic for the locals. One notable place at Gertak Sanggul is the Seafood Fishing Stage well-concealed in some of the residences. It has a man-made pond that allows fishing enthusiasts to fish; in the evenings, it is transformed into a family restaurant that specializes in offering seafood (sourced from the local fishermen). It is a place most suitable for families that want to take their kids a step nearer to nature and to dine-in amidst the serene neighborhood. There's no standard menu and is subject to the daily supplies (sourced locally) but do check with them on the prices before you order (some can be very expensive). If you plan to visit this place, do be there early or expect to wait for at least an hour, the serving speed can be a little slow.

Chicken Maklouba (RM 25) here is delicious. The rice is fluffy and light, rendering a very delicious taste. It comes with a big portion of chicken and some eggplants. Harlequin Combo and Crab Combo are both the most-ordered meals here. The former one comes with a concoction of Clams, Mussels, Yabbies, Prawns, Sausages and Corns while the latter choice has Crabs, Sausages and Corns. Both were dressed in a spicy, sweet-savory sauce. Both possessed strong smokiness; the flavor-combo was attractive at first but we thought it was too monotonous towards the end. The boldly seasoned Seafood was too hefty on the palate. Seafood was fresh and the fact that Mud Crabs with Roe were served, we thought the prices were well-justified. Good for novelty experience but not the type of food that I would want to eat on a regular basis.

With near to 10 years of experience in the food & beverage industry, BRFNC Food Services (same management as Blue Reef Fish N Chips) takes over the management of Loke Thye Kee, an iconic heritage building that sits right smack in central Georgetown. The 88 year old building stays as it is, the only change made was the newly rolled out menu. It is a space dedicated to marry history with good food. Loke Thye Kee was once famed as one of the first established Hainanese restaurants in Georgetown in the olden days; with that in mind, the new management decided to preserve the Hainanese element as well as introducing some Nyonya dishes to the menu. The old school atmosphere is a reminiscent of the past- the interior decoration suggests evocative memories on the Hainanese Kopitiam. The restaurant opens as early as 8:30 am and expect to see an intimate variety of Hainanese Coffee with Toast for breakfast; full-fledged Hainanese-Nyonya menu will be served starting from noon. If you are on the lookout for Pork-Free caterer, Loke Thye Kee provides catering services as well.

The place is extremely popular amongst tourist, we were literally surrounded by tourists and none of the diners were locals. Well, what stood out for me was the Indonesian Prawns in claypot, which is basically a fancy name of saying Dry Curry Prawns, this dish was flavourful and have a nice mild punch. I ended up scraping out the claypot for the sauce.

The F&B scene in Penang does not sound like it will be slowing down for the new year of 2017, there are quite a number of new restaurants to put on radar. Foodies may have noticed this eye-catchy building at the corner of Hutton Lane, right next to New World Park. The exterior of the restaurant is painted in orange color, with a few bright spotlights in action. The name "Green Bell" surely does not ring a bell... at least not for us. Green Bell has quite an extensive menu, offering a vast selection of Western-Fusion dishes, though most of them are priced reasonably, the dishes lacked the excitement when it comes to quality... as though it was just an ordinary restaurant in the neighborhood. Food-aside, the service on our visit was lackluster; for a few simple orders, it took them more than one hour to serve and the restaurant was not even half-full.
