SO is On Lok Yun as much of a “MUST-VISIT” place like what everyone says? Well… If you’re intending to tour around the Chinatown area, then why not? Otherwise, if this is out of the way and you’ve difficulties in fitting this in your itinerary, I’d say skip it. The food here isn’t out of this world, just plain classic old breakfast you could really just whip up on your own, really. It’s probably just the ambience, the effort to get here, and the taste of the food that brings back the kind of homely happiness and nostalgia that keeps people coming back whenever there are in Bangkok! Hey, not forgetting they have accidentally photogenic tables too!

Phad Khanom Jeen (Stirred fried noodle with pork floss). You can only find this in Som Tam Nua and since you are here, you might as well try their special noodles! The noodles are very soft and the inclusion of flosses and pork skin gives this dish more texture.

Savoey雖然是老店,但裝修時尚簡潔,Menu附有英文和圖片,十分方便遊客。店內除了海鮮,也有其他泰國菜,如串燒,Som Tum,Pad Thai等等,豐儉由人。八間分位置如下,位置最方便是位於BTS Chidlom旁的分店,最靚的分店是位於河邊的Tha Maharaj分店。

My friend Gavin Chan (who eats mainly atas food) said, “You MUST try the Drunken Noodles”, and he was not drunk when he told me that. The 400 Baht plate consists of flat rice noodles fried in hot & spicy sauce, and jumbo prawns marinated in wine. Frying it over coal fire meant that the noodles had more wok hei.

Jay Fai是位於舊城區的小炒店,非常出名,雖然店鋪小而且裝修簡陋,但仍然客似雲來。出名的原因是用料新鮮,全部都是真材實料,其次就是價錢貴,很難想像到一間小店吃晚餐的價錢要過千Baht,有如在貴價餐廳吃晚餐,但當你吃過便會覺得物有所值,當然前題是要捨得花錢吃,店內最出名的蟹肉奄列要800Baht,醉貓炒河要400Baht。

餐廳位於巷內,由金佛寺步行只要5分鐘,餐廳內掛滿油畫,也有數隻小貓,用餐位置是半開放式的,除了有面對河邊的用餐位,更有一個貼近河邊的座位,面前是沒有圍欄,整個河景一覽無遺,非常寫意。餐廳內有供應泰式小吃,也有一些日式食品,價錢100-200Baht左右,啤酒約180Baht,價錢與天台酒吧相若,但黃昏來這裡喝瓶啤酒,聽住Jazz音樂及看日落也是不錯。

The final product – Probably the best Kway Teow Kua Gai in Bangkok! I love that the kway teow is crispy on the outside and still soft on the inside. The flavour is on point because it isn’t too bland or savoury. The chicken (gai) also gives the dish additional texture and flavours.

Kuay Teow Kua Gai Nai Hong (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวคั่วไก่นายฮ้ง) is definitely one of the prime spots in Bangkok for kuay teow kua gai (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวคั่วไก่), no doubt about it. I loved it, and especially that vibrantly smokey flavor that saturated the noodles, chicken, and egg. I did think it was a little salty (probably MSG too), but I won’t lie, that did make it incredibly tasty.

Deep-fried Snapper in Green Curry served with Thai rice noodle [470฿] – When you eat deep fried fish, it is good to make sure that the fish is fresh because if it’s not the fish will be extremely dry after frying. This fried snapper was fresh and you can tell when you bite into it. In addition what I like about fried fish is it’s skin. So crispy. This version comes with Green Curry and it’s Savoey’s signature item. The rice noodles are soft and light and eating it with the green curry is just so good!

Savoey stir fried curry crab. I love this. The curry is not spicy and fragrant. The crab is fresh and I can order a couple of more plates of this, I can promise you. Probably what missing here is the Chinese bun (mantao). This is gorgeous.

店鋪位於角落,還拉起了帳篷,不細心留意也不會察覺到原來是一家雪糕店。門口的櫥櫃放滿了雪糕的配料,店內粉藍色的牆壁上部份油漆已剝落,掛滿了舊照片及傳媒報導,部份已發黃,可見店鋪歷史悠久,也多了一份懷舊味道。雪糕有多種口味,除了招牌的椰子,還有芒果也是很受歡迎,每款只售25Baht,芒果則要40Baht,可隨意加上不同的配料。如喜歡看舊事物、舊情懷,便要來試試傳統的泰國雪糕,附近一帶還有很多傳統老店及舊建築。

Ae Seafood除了在店內,晚上在路邊也放滿座位,只有簡單的裝修,靠著新鮮的海鮮吸引食客,是吃炭燒海鮮、小菜,喝啤酒的地方。店員都不太會講英文,Menu上全是泰文,只附有小量圖片參考,可先準備想吃的菜式的泰文,或圖片,一般價錢都是1-200Baht左右,部份海鮮按重量計。比較多人點的是炭燒河蝦,牛油蒜蓉燒扇貝,招牌的蝦粉絲煲 ,魚露炸魚,炒通菜等等。如果想平吃海鮮,地道風味又唔介意無裝修,Ae Seafood很值得去。

he winning dish for us was without a doubt their Fresh Noodle in Spicy Pork (145 baht), and it’s no wonder it’s the White Flower Factory signature dish. Looking suspiciously like kway chap when it was first served on our table, we wondered for a moment if we ordered it. But when we took a spoonful of the soup, the richness of the broth won us over. Yum Pla Dook Fu (ยำปลาดุกฟู), which is also known as Crispy Catfish Salad with Green Mango. This is the all-time favourite I need to order whenever I come here (Sometimes I even get 2 portions!). The Crispy Catfish is actually very crispy and puffy. The original taste of the crispy catfish is a little salty. It goes well with the sourness of the green mango, the slight spiciness from red onions and the hint of bitterness from celery. Moreover, they also give you the Thai style salad paste. It is a little sweet, spicy and sour. You have to mix everything together before eat this item. If you are a person who loves intense tastes, this dish is just for you.

店的門口貼滿了Menu,很易認,除了炒米粉,也有炒河粉,炒飯,各式小菜等等,比較特別的還有奄列蛋冬陰湯。如行過舊城區,食完Mont Nom Sod也可到這兒吃粉米。建議晚上才來,可坐店外比較舒服。店內設有英文Menu,點餐方便。

位於朱拉隆功大學旁的飲食街(Soi Chula一帶)的Pheng Racha ,是一間專賣泰式炒粿條(Kuay Teow Kua Gai ก๋วยเตี๋ยวคั่วไก่)的小店,除了正常版的炒粿條,也有這店發明的特別版。正常的炒粿條是用大火將粿條煎香、再加上雞肉、魷魚及蛋後再炒成,在舊城區一帶都有賣,如在Kuay Teow Kua Gai Worachak。而這家店發明了用香魚絲去代替粿條,炒出一個新菜式-炒香魚絲 Taro Kua Gai ทาโร่คั่วไก่,Taro是一個泰國香魚絲的牌子名。
