Soon Lai Corner is a well-kept secret, it's not the usual place that you would patronize if not introduced by those who are in the know. The place is popular amongst the working class nearby, not so much on the food but the fresh Coconut Toddy (also known as Palm Wine). The alcoholic beverage is not exactly common at this part of the island; the cooling nature of the drink is believed to bring medicinal effects to the body. On the food, it offers a simple home-styled Chinese Chu Char dishes (with standard-average price points). Do not expect the place to come with cozy ambiance though, it is merely a standard, not air-conditioned coffee shop with basic tables and chairs.

Those who frequent Batu Maung area might be familiar to this place, those who are in the know would have at least heard or visited the place... definitely a hidden gem worth to uncover. Nestled in a bungalow along Jalan Batu Maung (opposite to the World Fish Organization), Ken Curry House attracts the factory workers working nearby... for its inexpensive, satisfying yet tummy-filling Curry (with rice) variants. It has been there for a few years and it only opens during lunch hours... to cater for the lunch crowd. The curry specialist offers nothing except curries... and occasionally, a special home-cooked Bak Kut Teh (small menu). The place has a simple setting overlooking the garden, but it can be a little warm during the sultry hot days. Not too shabby for a quick meal but not a place to hang out.

Those who are in the know can relate to this dish... one of the signature dishes at Sin Hwa Lam- 3 Flavor Deep Fried Red Snapper, had the fish Deep Fried till a shattering crisp and served over their sweet, savory and hot sauce with aplenty of Onions, Bird's Eye Chili, Garlic. The concoction was very inviting and appetizing, a good complement to the fresh fish. Assam Prawns were nothing out of the ordinary, though they possessed the quintessential flavors; the dish just did not manage to hit us but the Prawns were fresh nevertheless. If you are cutting down on Rice, why not try their Singapore Fried Bee Hoon? We thought their Singapore Fried Bee Hoon was good, carefully seasoned and expertly cooked to the right dot. The crunchy elements such as Cabbage and Onions added another layer of juicy bite to the dish. Our only possible complain was the Bee Hoon/ Vermicelli Noodles come in a lump.
