Seafood lovers are not forsaken too.... the budget-watchers may visit the Lok-Lok stall to savor the range of Lok-Lok offering... served with their home-made dips while those with deeper pockets could try the baked Crabs... available in different sizes and price points. Otherwise, the BBQ Platter would satisfy both your meat cravings and seafood desire.

Sae Ma Eul, a longtime Korean barbecue joint (well-established in Klang Valley) expanded to Penang recently and we figured out at least a trio of reasons for that: quality, authenticity and a good selection of not only meat but Korean delights (such as cold noodles, Kimchi stew, Korean Pancake etc) as well. The new Penang branch can be found on 1st floor of Automall (at Karpal Singh Drive) but don't be put off by the location. Though not air-conditioned, it provides an outdoorsy ambiance with good ventilation (sea breeze if you are lucky); exactly like those barbecue joints by the roadside in South Korea. The setting is casual, modern and clean; Sae Ma Eul uses charcoal to fuel and cook the meat but fret not for the divas, the helpful service staff are forever ready to assist. The alcoholics might be glad to know that the Korean BBQ place offers "Hite" Beer and Korean Soju; otherwise, the complementary unlimited refills of water would mercilessly effective at washing away the accumulating heat.

Red Bean Ice Top (RM 23) was served in generous portion and topped up with Azuki beans and almond flakes. We enjoyed the well balanced sweetness introduced by the condensed milk and the sleek shaved ice that gentle to the tongue. Usage of Azuki beans did make the difference and reflect its Korean descent. It is best shared among 2 people to prevent fatigue arising from having too big bowl at one go.

If you are tired of the usual franchise cafes around, it's high time that you pay a visit to Cafe Droptop, a Korean-franchise brand that has recently landed on Penang. Cafe Droptop has heavy presence in Korea and in recent years, it has expanded its business operations to other Asian countries. Its first outlet in Penang can be found at Maritime Piazza. Like most franchise brands, Cafe Droptop offers a standard cafe menu with a Korean touch. The menu has a delicious mix of beverages and sweet treat; notable items include Maple Honey Toast, Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice) and Sweet Potato Latte. Prices are on the higher side but the modern-chic atmosphere is comfortable and cozy, definitely a place where you can spend some leisure time with your friends or family.

Le Harlequin Restaurant

29C-01-19, Maritime Persiaran Karpal Singh 11600 Georgetown Penang

With a name like Le Harlequin Cafe one would expect the place to serve up Coffee or Cakes but in actual fact it brings stir-fried Seafood to the table.

Harlequin Combo and Crab Combo are both the most-ordered meals here. The former one comes with a concoction of Clams, Mussels, Yabbies, Prawns, Sausages and Corns while the latter choice has Crabs, Sausages and Corns. Both were dressed in a spicy, sweet-savory sauce. Both possessed strong smokiness; the flavor-combo was attractive at first but we thought it was too monotonous towards the end. The boldly seasoned Seafood was too hefty on the palate. Seafood was fresh and the fact that Mud Crabs with Roe were served, we thought the prices were well-justified. Good for novelty experience but not the type of food that I would want to eat on a regular basis.

For a no-frills Thai Mookata experience, look no further than this curious space at Automall, Karpal Singh Drive. Affordably priced at Rm 19.90 for a basic set (serves 2), budget watchers can now enjoy delicious Thai Steamboat at unbeatable price, well-complemented with sea breeze. The simple set includes some basic meat balls, greens and meat but those with a deeper pocket can always top up extra few dollars for the additional spread. Bangkok Garden BBQ is not air-conditioned and instead, it relies on the sea breeze so the best time to visit would probably in the evening. The serving portion is not that great but it would be perfectly fine to be served as supper in lieu of a proper meal. Bangkok Garden BBQ can be found right next to Sae Ma Eul Korean BBQ Restaurant.

Consider yourself incredibly lucky if you are a fan of Sze Chuan food, more options for you right now with the opening of Hero Pot at Karpal Singh Drive. Belongs to the "Mix", a convenient store that sells fancy imported goods from China, Japan, Korea etc, Hero Pot offers Sze Chuan-influenced dishes and of course... Sze Chuan "Mala" Hot Pot. But everything is designed to be ostentatious here, when you are about to enter the premise, you will be greeted by servers wearing traditional Chinese outfit. They will bring you to your table and before you are seated, they will shout "heroes are coming"... an awkward start to a meal. The menu is Hot Pot-centric, with a few classic Chinese snacks. Service is attentive but do not expect things to be cheap here, expect to fork out at least Rm 50 per pax for a decent meal here. Not particularly impressive as far as taste is concerned... if you must know.

On a lunch visit, we had the Sashimi Platter, Iberico Pork Ribs along with the Oriental Red Seafood Signature Hot Pot which is clearly a must. Oriental Red Seafood's Signature Hot Pot is almost a must-order item and its a commonly seen order on almost every table. As long as you have purchased some items for the Hot Pot, the broth will be complimentary- you need not pay an additional fee for it. We were also told that the broth is imported from Japan on a daily basis and unlimited top up is possible. The broth is seasoned and carried a bold Umami taste but can be a little salty towards the end, especially if you are cooking a lot of Seafood in it.

Korean food in the Jelutong neighborhood might be a scarce for the past but not now with the opening of a new Korean joint- Sigsa Korean Restaurant, housed under the new commercial building- Straits Garden. The Korean restaurant serves classic Korean staples such as Barbecues, Hotpots, Stews, Tteokbokki, Korean Noodles and Rice dishes. It has the standard Korean restaurant setting meant for barbecue (sans the good ventilation system), cleverly covered in wooden furnishing. We did not get to sample a lot of their dishes but from what we had, they were of standard-average quality... nothing more and nothing less than an average Korean restaurant; but prices are slightly higher than average.

Sushi Ya offers Sushi at RM1.90 and RM2.90. Due to the relatively low price, it's quite popular among residents in Jelutong. It was crowded during my visit. However, the sashimi they served are not really that fresh. You can see from the maguro sushi below. I guess this is a trade-off for the price. Well, if you're not into raw fish, this might be a good place for you to have economical sushi.
  • kenhuntfood.com
  • 2016-12-07 00:00:00+00:00
Lovers of Sushi, Maki and Nigiri might be glad to know or not that Sushi Ya has opened a new outlet in Penang island. The brand is well-established at Raja Uda and is known for its economical offering. Many budget eaters flocked the place when it was first opened; the new branch at Straits Garden, Jelutong is highly visible from the bustling Jelutong Street. But how economical is economical, you wondered? The items run on the Sushi Belt are priced either at Rm 1.90 (for pink plates) and Rm 2.90 (for red plates); while those on the menu are priced relatively lower than most Japanese restaurants in town. The trade off is of course the quality, which equates to the prices- cheap. Oddly, though the prices seem cheap, the final bill came to (4) us was slightly over Rm 150 (plus surcharges). There was no satisfaction at all; unless required, we do not see ourselves patronizing the place in the future.

Duck Meat Soup with Vermicelli Noodles , the soup was jam-packed with the meaty flavor from the Duck (though some will define it as gamy) while the Vermicelli Noodles were carefully cooked till the right texture- not slouchy nor hard to the bite. Carnivores will be excited to see the generous serving of meat in this bowl of meat-wholesomeness. Eat it together with their marinated Garlic and Chilies for another different experience, the sour-spicy kick enhances the flavor instead of over-shadowing it. Try to believe.

Vietnam's cuisine is greatly influenced by France, when they introduced us their Ham & Roasted Pork Sanwich , we didn't hesitate to try. The ham they used were homemade and it is very different with the western ham we usually have especially its texture and taste. We find their roasted pork eminently scrumptious, expelling the pork's aroma yet keeping the meat's moisture. They have considerably separated the cilantro in case some find its strong scent intolerable. Or else, you may sandwiched them between the bread.

Smojo Restaurant

No 29C-01-12 Maritime Piazza 11600 George Town Malaysia

Inspired by the American culture, Smojo is specializing in serving American Style Fried Chicken, Burgers and sides that go so well with your meal. Besides, we added some healthier options to our menu, like salads and pasta. Made from farm fresh ingredients, we aim to supply the market with premium quality fast food. We hand-batter every piece of our chicken and make them in small batches all day long, so they're always hot and juicy. Our patties are made using only 100% fresh meat, and are always free of additives, fillers and preservatives.

During our visit, chickens are fried on the spot upon order to ensure freshness. You can have in ala carte, or order in a complete set (comes with French fries and soft drink of your choice). If you enjoy having some skewers, then Akiyoshi is one of the decent pick as you can see the chef preparing and grilling the skewers in kitchen. There are aplenty of choices but one of it we enjoyed is Gindara Teriyaki (Cod Fish). Its fatty acid gives it a greasy yet delectable taste, though we would have preferred a less bolder sauce. Otherwise, get a Shake Kama Syioyaki (Salmon Head) to have a taste on the chef's great grilling skills.

Oden in light soy-flavored broth comes in a variety of choices – Japanese fish cakes, tofu cakes, and skewered dried beancurd, a fantasy of “intestines”. Right across the junction to Sungai Pinang and Jelutong, Jason Nyonya House is one of the latest Nyonya restaurants in town. The amiable restaurant has classic wooden house features with staircase at the entrance. It feels very homey, just like any casual dining spot in the neighborhood. The setting does not suggest that it is a Nyonya restaurant... as far as decor is concerned. The name sums it all, the place offers a simple, home-cooked style Nyonya menu. The classics such as Loh Bak, Joo Hoo Char, Inche Kabin, Assam Pedas are there with some additional 'specials of the day' (but we were a little underwhelmed the dish- Assam Prawns was not on the menu). After sampling some of the dishes, we reckon that they lacked the authentic Nyonya touch. Authenticity aside, the dishes were not shabby (if you are seeing the place as a standard Zhu Char place in lieu of Nyonya restaurant).

The big pot with all our selected ingredients are painted in red colour with the exception of a slight green colours from the coriander leaves. Even the okra we selected were covered in red colour also, signifying the chef really fry everything altogether with chili.
