Hallasan Mountain rises up proudly from the center of Jeju Island and is perhaps the island’s most memorable landmarks. Also called Mt. Yeongjusan, meaning "mountain high enough to pull the galaxy," Hallasan Mountain is widely known by scientists for its geological value. Designated as a national park in 1970, there are 368 parasitic volcanoes called Oreums (peaks) around the main mountain.

Gwaneumsa Trail 관음사 (North):
Gwaneumsa Temple - Dongneung Peak
8.7 km / 5 hrs each way
Gwaneumsa Trail offers hikers the best view of Hallasan’s deep valleys and stunning terrain. Midway along the trail is Guringul (a lava cave) and Tamna Valley. Tamna Valley is especially beautiful during the fall when the leaves are changing and during the winter when the entire area lays under a dusting of snow.

Seongpanak Trail 성판악 (East):
Seongpanak → Dongneung Peak
9.6 km / 4 hrs 30 mins each way
This relatively long, gently sloping trail is perfect for beginners. Lush broadleaf trees give shade from the beating sun and in spring the azaleas bloom and turn the mountainside into a dazzling array of color.

Eorimok Trail (Northwest):
Eorimok → Nambyeok Bungijeom
6.8 km / 3 hrs each way
This short trail is another relatively easy trail for beginners. In spring, the nearby meadows are adorned with red royal azaleas. From the stone pathway to Mansedongsan visitors can catch a breathtaking panoramic view of the countryside and the island’s signature Oreums.

Yeongsil Trail (Southwest):
Yeongsil - Nambyeok Bungijeom
5.8 km / 2 hrs 30 mins each way
As the shortest trail in Hallasan, this trail boasts Yeongsilgiam (a spectacular cliff with series of unusual rock formations). It is covered with azaleas and royal azaleas in spring and vibrant autumn foliage starting in October.

Eoseungsaengak Trail:
Eorimok → Eoseungsangak Peak
1.3 km / 30 min each way

Hiking up Hallasan via Seongpanak trail, absolutely beautiful, one of the most amazing trail I had been to. The peak is a volcano crater turned into a lake.

Took the 6.20am bus 781 from the terminal and reach Seongpanak in 30 minutes. This trail is popular, with many people hiking on a Monday morning with good support infrastructure. You can arrive earlier and have breakfast here. The journey to the peak is about 5h, and you could come down via another trail.

There is a shelter near the peak with toilet and sell hot coffee for 500won, amazing!

Climb the Halla Mountain | All about Jeju Island

Overall, It took me 9 hours to climb up and down the Halla Mountain. I was exhausted after the climbing, but it was worth the visit as I could see the crater lake which cannot be seen easily on a sunny day. After the rain comes the crater lake, so Mountain climbers, come visit the Halla Mountain when it clears after the rain!

Halla Mountain {Korea’s highest mountain} – Jeju Island – Adventurers at Heart…

After a grueling speed walk up the last few 100m, we summited Halla Mountain late morning, just as the mist rolled in. It was rather chilly at the top, and unfortunately very overcast so after taking a couple of pics of the crater and resting for 15 minutes, we started our descent.
