Indeed, the Mango Crepe Cake looks appetizing the moment it was served to our table. While we both agreed the layering was done perfectly and appreciated the less sweet version of the crepe cakes, the flavour did not bond well to our taste buds. We felt there is a kind of sugary syrup, flavour or perhaps cream that made us feel surfeiting upon consuming. The taste is especially prominent around the area where mangoes are present.

We had a fruity Mango Crepe Cake and a playful Nyonya Kaya Crepe Cake; the former one had a light, subtle tropical flavor. It was not sweet at all, while yours truly thought it was perfect, the partner in crime thought it could be sweeter. ÉNFD is an abbreviation of 'Énfold'- pronounced as 'unfold' with a meaning of 'gather and envelop' people through good food. It runs like a private kitchen, though walk-ins are welcome, the dining space is limited and could only host no more than 15 diners at a time. The dining hall preserves the sense of heritage with minimal interior decor; probably meant to encourage and enhance camaraderie amongst diners. It is a space that one could really talk and engage with each other. On the menu, the list of magical offering is unique and creatively crafted by the team behind ÉNFD; with focus on using Herbs and Spices ('local flavors') to intermingle with international flavors. The conservatives will find the menu too playful and to me, this is the attitude in lacking especially in the culinary scene in Penang. The brunch menu is only available on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 am to 3 pm.

Well, we choose Kim Haus Spaghetti Aglio Olio Chicken (RM 22.90) and it did not disappoint. Spaghetti noodles were cooked to al-dente and was seasoned nicely with a hint of spiciness, then garnished with olives. We were surprised to see generous quantity of big chicken cutlets were served. It was great but the entire presentation or experience would have been better if the chickens were cut into smaller slices. Overall it was a great spaghetti.

Arakawa's Yaki Beef Curry Rice was served in a hot pot with baked, melted Cheese topped. There were slivers of sliced Beef well hidden in the Rice but they were not a lot. They could also be more generous with the serving of Japanese Curry, the proportion of Rice to Curry was somewhat inappropriate (all dried up towards the end). While the Japanese Curry flavor was apparent, we thought it was flat and could be monotonous for one to finish entirely. It lacked the refreshing elements like Carrot, Potatoes or perhaps, some Apple in it. Fortunately, we topped the Beef Curry Rice with an additional add on of Hamburg Steak. While the texture might be a little overly dry, we enjoyed the rich meaty flavor and thought it went well with the Japanese Curry Rice.

If you have passed by Lebuh McNair recently, chances are high that you have seen this stretch of heritage houses with odd embellishment vying for attention. It does not suggest a thing and some actually though it was a museum-to-be but in actual fact, it comprises of restaurants jointly named as "McNair Restaurants", serving both Peranakan Nyonya cuisine and Western cuisine. Not much signage out the front and the exaggerated decoration outside means nothing but the interior suggests otherwise. Step in the restaurant and you will see traces of the "Nyonya-Peranakan" traits- from the usual Peranakan antique tiles to seemingly priceless heirloom displayed on the wall. Ironically, the menu is not limited to Peranakan cuisine... there are some Western options for those with Western palate either. Prices are reasonable and it isn't a stretch to go for Seafood dishes like Assam Pedas Fish or Assam Prawns. It is also note-worthy that McNair Restaurants are fully air-conditioned and serve family-style servings.

Taiwanese Beef Noodle – RM20 per bowl, RM25 per set (with coffee). The noodle was served with braised beef and topped with vegetable, pickles and spring onion. The noodles are imported from Taiwan as the locally made noodles are made with lye water. The beef slices were braised in long hours until soft and tender. The taste of the soup was thick and tasty while the overall of the dish was so delicious.

On the mains, we had both Pan Seared Norwegian Salmon and Australian Grain Fed Beef Tenderloin; the former one was safe choice with pretty simple and straight-forward flavors, the latter option on the other hand, was beyond amazing. It probably outshined the Salmon, the Tenderloin was melt-in-the-mouth tender. The red meat was carefully cooked to the right doneness with spot-on seasoning and a burst of delightful meat juice. Nigiri Sushi Sakura, a sushi platter that comes with raw fish slice over pressed vinegared rice is a real bargain with RM 38. The sushi was no doubt fresh but the rice preparation was sloppy - the rice could not hold well as one and did not stick together, and it fall into pieces the moment we try to pick it up. Everything is alright other than above factor.

The famous Puppy Chocolate Mousse does not come cheap... selling at Rm 30 per piece. It served to us frozen hard so the Mousse had the texture of Ice Cream. It was pretty chocolaty and delicately sweetened. It gets pretty surfeit due to its creamy nature so sharing is wiser. Was it worth it? Only for novelty experience, a hefty piece of Chocolate Mousse is not something you would want to eat on a regular basis.

Modernist cuisine or Molecular Gastronomy might not be new to the world but it's definitely something to range over, particularly for Penangites. Innovation is a critical element when it comes to a modernist kitchen- not only that the Chef must change the customary way one would prepare and present the dish but the Chef must bring a change to how diners experience the food either. Adventurous eaters can make their way to the small alley at Nagore Square (where all the bars and small little shops located); A.Maze occupies a strategic corner right next to the vacant land; from outside, the restaurant suggests a nary of information on what it is about to serve, inside... there are only 8 seats arranged snugly facing a small kitchen manned by the Chef-Owner Chef Wei. The very young and talented Chef honed his culinary skills from overseas and had had working experience in Michelin-starred restaurants. A.Maze serves "Omakase" which literally means "leave it to the Chef", the menu is not informed to diners and it relies entirely on "trust" but Chef Wei is not a one-trick pony- diners' sense of taste is not the only thing that changes here... the "Omakse" menu switches once a month and it depends on the seasonal offering. Thanks to Chef Wei, we had the opportunity to join him in his extraordinary gastronomical journey.
