A westernize restaurant.

The interior of the Cafe is modern and simple at the same time with hanging light bulbs and very laid back type of seating area, especially those on the second floor.

The Butterworth City Centre along Jalan Raja Uda and Jalan Permatang Pauh has just got a little more exciting with the opening of Pentagon 5 Studio. The cafe occupies the entire two-storey building, strategically located right in front of Aroma Hotel, Butterworth. The exterior gives a hint that the place is chic with dashing decoration but inside, it proves otherwise. Once stepped in the cafe, we feel the industrial vibe- hanging light bulbs, modern furniture and heavy metal embellishment. Interior decor aside, the menu is pretty hipstery... featuring some of the Instagram-worthy desserts (such as Soft Serve) as well as an array of Western-Fusion menu (we were told that the Chef's a Thai so some of the Thai-influenced dishes are worth looking forward to). Service was great, we were greeted immediately upon arrival and the server pleasantly invited us to the table with clear explanation on their offering... certainly something that we did not expect, at least from a newly established (two-week old) cafe.

To have some unusual wantan mee, drop by at Beng Soon Kopi Tiam, not too far away from KFC Raja Uda, Butterworth. Also know as Drawer Wantan Mee by off timers, the wantan mee is unusual as its thicker therefor more chewie and springy, more like eating the thick flat wantan noodles or the thick noodles use for KL style Hokkien Mee.

More options for seasoned Steamboat diners at Raja Uda, Guan Xian Lao Ma (灌县老妈砂锅串串) is one of the biggest names when it comes to Steamboat/ Hot Pot in Sze Chuan, China. The restaurateur obtained local franchisee license to operate an extended branch here... at Raja Uda Commercial City Centre, Butterworth (same row as Pentagon 5). The brand is known to dish out Sze Chuan Ma-La Spicy Hot Pot with Skewers... the same concept is being brought to the branch in Raja Uda as well. The restaurant is nicely decorated, step in the restaurant and you will be instantly teleported to China... even the stools, wall paper, lighting and tables; all resemble the characteristics of old Chinese decorations. The menu is fairly large, diners can either order by filling up the order form or simply head to the display fridge and help themselves with the skewers (Rm 1.80 per stick). There are of course, some standard items but only a handful of soup bases available.

My main is the lamb chop which i order medium, well i certainly got medium, Malaysia Kopi Tiam Style Medium, which i consider almost well done. (Sad - but this is typical western food in kopi tiam and basic cafes in malaysia. Look like next time i will order it rare to get real medium). My customization goes Medium, Black Pepper Sauce, with Coleslaw, and the Meal arrive with more lettuce as a garnish, perfect. the Black Pepper sauce could be with a bit more punch. I requested for some Tobaccos sauce (Not available) & Salt n Pepper. Anyway the lamb chop is Lamb Loin not Lamb Shoulder which most place give now. I would definitely consider this the best in Butterworth I have eaten.

Tummy-filler was their signature Dong Bei Noodles, served with Minced Pork and crunchy diced Cucumber. The real soul to the dish was the Minced Pork- delicately seasoned right on the dot while the noodles were carefully cooked to the right texture. The Cucumber on the other hand, introduced another crunchy-juicy dimension to the dish; even better to go with their smoky Chili paste. We ended the meal with a memorable sweet treat- Sesame Bun. The Bun was served to us scorching hot; apply pressure and you will find the molten Sesame filling oozes out from the bun. The crust was nicely done- thin with a tawny crisp while the filling was carefully sweetened; it was jaw-droppingly good.

Each serving of the Mango Kakigori comes with fresh Mango and a small portion of Glutinous Rice. The accompanying sauce was Coconut Cream and Mango Jam, the overall combination was lovely and the texture was great. We love every bit of it but the ice melted too fast and without us noticing, it turned into water in a jiffy.

The course mellows out to finish in a Tuak Sorbet with Gula Melaka Syrup, Coconut Flakes, and Rose Rice Cake. To get the perfect taste, we were instructed to blend in the ingredients together. It is somehow more flavorful, balanced by a delicate sweetness and texture. All well ends well with a cup of Nutmeg Tea.

This is my highly recommended Taiwan Original Beef Noodle Soup . The portion was just okay for me, if you are a big eater or you wish to have it bigger in portion, you might opt to add/top with extra noodles, by doing so, it costs you Rm 5. I opted for Beef Balls only, where originally, there should be Beef (the meat) and the Beef Balls coming together. It comes with some green vegetables, pickled vegetables, and some chilies. The soup might be a bit spicy for some, but it was not spicy at all for me. Accompanied by the springy and bouncy noodles, the thick and rich broth actually worked together perfectly, especially with a touch of sourish pickled cabbages.

We tried 2 of their cakes - Matcha Cheese (RM 14.90) and Blueberry Cheese Mousse (RM 14.90). These are some great choices we had. The cakes were dense, not too sweet and sleek in terms of texture. Another popular choice here appeared to be their Pavlova, as quite a number of visitors here ordered this sweet dessert.

If you have passed by Lebuh McNair recently, chances are high that you have seen this stretch of heritage houses with odd embellishment vying for attention. It does not suggest a thing and some actually though it was a museum-to-be but in actual fact, it comprises of restaurants jointly named as "McNair Restaurants", serving both Peranakan Nyonya cuisine and Western cuisine. Not much signage out the front and the exaggerated decoration outside means nothing but the interior suggests otherwise. Step in the restaurant and you will see traces of the "Nyonya-Peranakan" traits- from the usual Peranakan antique tiles to seemingly priceless heirloom displayed on the wall. Ironically, the menu is not limited to Peranakan cuisine... there are some Western options for those with Western palate either. Prices are reasonable and it isn't a stretch to go for Seafood dishes like Assam Pedas Fish or Assam Prawns. It is also note-worthy that McNair Restaurants are fully air-conditioned and serve family-style servings.

The banana leaf rice set is served in a combination of traditional and modern way. Rice is still being laid on a banana leaf, but the dishes and gravies are served in a single steel cup instead of being scooped on the banana leaf. Well, we loved every bits of the gravies here, and the dishes were delicious. If ever we felt the taste became too complicated, a bite of the picked chili will help to cleanse the entire taste buds.

On the mains, we had both Pan Seared Norwegian Salmon and Australian Grain Fed Beef Tenderloin; the former one was safe choice with pretty simple and straight-forward flavors, the latter option on the other hand, was beyond amazing. It probably outshined the Salmon, the Tenderloin was melt-in-the-mouth tender. The red meat was carefully cooked to the right doneness with spot-on seasoning and a burst of delightful meat juice. This is definitely one of the best Beef around.

ENFD Restaurant

ÉNFD /ɪnˈfəʊld/ is a down-to-earth dining space located in the heart of Penang passionate on ambitious and experimental local flavours. ÉNFD is an abbreviation of 'Énfold'- pronounced as 'unfold' with a meaning of 'gather and envelop' people through good food. It runs like a private kitchen, though walk-ins are welcome, the dining space is limited and could only host no more than 15 diners at a time. The dining hall preserves the sense of heritage with minimal interior decor; probably meant to encourage and enhance camaraderie amongst diners. It is a space that one could really talk and engage with each other. On the menu, the list of magical offering is unique and creatively crafted by the team behind ÉNFD; with focus on using Herbs and Spices ('local flavors') to intermingle with international flavors. The conservatives will find the menu too playful and to me, this is the attitude in lacking especially in the culinary scene in Penang. The brunch menu is only available on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 am to 3 pm.

A.Maze Restaurant

63A, Jalan Nagor 10050 George Town Pulau Pinang Malaysia

A Maze, the brain child of Chef Wei, is a rather small restaurant, sitting only 8 pax per night, however this allows for a rather intimate affair as you will be seated Chef side as he guides you along course by course. Located in the heart of George Town, Penang. Serving Alternative Cuisine Chef Wei draws inspiration from the vibrant backdrop of the island he resides in, from it’s rich heritage and culture to the interesting produces that are found in and around this area, working with the seasons, a new course of meal is served every month. Pulling apart, reconstituting, reinterpreting, reinventing and innovating, A Maze’s ambitions are to break expectations, challenge conventions and leave you lost in wonderment on a culinary experience. There are no menus and no ordering here, we ask that you bring an open mind and an appetite, and allow Chef Wei to bring you on a journey a spoonful at a time.

  • kenhuntfood.com
  • 2016-12-09 00:00:00+00:00
Modernist cuisine or Molecular Gastronomy might not be new to the world but it's definitely something to range over, particularly for Penangites. Innovation is a critical element when it comes to a modernist kitchen- not only that the Chef must change the customary way one would prepare and present the dish but the Chef must bring a change to how diners experience the food either. Adventurous eaters can make their way to the small alley at Nagore Square (where all the bars and small little shops located); A.Maze occupies a strategic corner right next to the vacant land; from outside, the restaurant suggests a nary of information on what it is about to serve, inside... there are only 8 seats arranged snugly facing a small kitchen manned by the Chef-Owner Chef Wei. The very young and talented Chef honed his culinary skills from overseas and had had working experience in Michelin-starred restaurants. A.Maze serves "Omakase" which literally means "leave it to the Chef", the menu is not informed to diners and it relies entirely on "trust" but Chef Wei is not a one-trick pony- diners' sense of taste is not the only thing that changes here... the "Omakse" menu switches once a month and it depends on the seasonal offering. Thanks to Chef Wei, we had the opportunity to join him in his extraordinary gastronomical journey.

Smojo Restaurant

No 29C-01-12 Maritime Piazza 11600 George Town Malaysia

Inspired by the American culture, Smojo is specializing in serving American Style Fried Chicken, Burgers and sides that go so well with your meal. Besides, we added some healthier options to our menu, like salads and pasta. Made from farm fresh ingredients, we aim to supply the market with premium quality fast food. We hand-batter every piece of our chicken and make them in small batches all day long, so they're always hot and juicy. Our patties are made using only 100% fresh meat, and are always free of additives, fillers and preservatives.

During our visit, chickens are fried on the spot upon order to ensure freshness. You can have in ala carte, or order in a complete set (comes with French fries and soft drink of your choice). Nevertheless, the fried chicken was falling short of our expectations (smaller chickens and dried meat), and the burger ain't impressive neither. It might be an okay choice if are looking for something to full your hunger and nothing else

Korean food in the Jelutong neighborhood might be a scarce for the past but not now with the opening of a new Korean joint- Sigsa Korean Restaurant, housed under the new commercial building- Straits Garden. The Korean restaurant serves classic Korean staples such as Barbecues, Hotpots, Stews, Tteokbokki, Korean Noodles and Rice dishes. It has the standard Korean restaurant setting meant for barbecue (sans the good ventilation system), cleverly covered in wooden furnishing. We did not get to sample a lot of their dishes but from what we had, they were of standard-average quality... nothing more and nothing less than an average Korean restaurant; but prices are slightly higher than average.

Krsna should be the place to check out their dosai served on banana leaf. Dosai is a kind of Indian crepe that made from rice and black gram that is naturally fermented overnight. Therefore, it carries a bit of soury taste, well compliment with chutney and sambar that was left on every table for unlimited refill. First timer should go with the plain dosai. Spicy lover may go for the onion version while masala dosai for those opting for much filling option.
