Despite the limelight being shined on hawker culture in Singapore, it’s difficult to come across new hawker stores that are serving up local classics.
Surely our muslim friends would be pleased to hear that it is also MUIS halal-certified! No wonder diners were swooping in even before lunchtime!
Saap Saap? Not quite, but passable as a convenient and fuss-free place to eat at Our Tampines Hub.
This was an unexpectedly good find. The lor mee came with a crispy and fragrant fried yam roll and very flavourful and slightly herbal braising sauce, with quite a lot of depth.
I’ll definitely return eagerly if I happen to be in the area.
If you haven’t visited Tampines Hub, this is a good chance to pop by and explore the East side of our little red dot.
The menu is pretty group-oriented, with lots of vast meat platters and mixed grills, but there’s also plenty for the lone diner – including, to my surprise, chicken fried steak. It’s not called that here, but that’s what it is – steak, pounded thin, breaded and deep fried.
I told ya I'd be back. This time I went for something called kabsa above. I'm not entirely sure how it differs from their mandi plate, but nonetheless I cleared it all quickly, especially since the rice wasn't as mushy as last time, and that little chili pepper packed some heat.
Here's another eastside place that I've been meaning to try (300 Tampines Avenue 5 #01-01A). It's run by a gentleman from Saudi Arabia, and as the name suggests, specializes in mandi, which I nearly went for until I saw the maqlubah section and figured that I try that instead given that it came with eggplant and potatoes.
Jin Hock Seafood in Tampines sells a variety of unique zichar dishes, adding a twist to classic dishes. Must try the duo hor fun!
Service at Jin Hock Seafood Restaurant, regardless of outlet, still retains a friendly heartland vibe. Staff converse and take orders in Singlish, demonstrating decent product knowledge by recommending orders and describing dishes.
The dishes we tried at Jin Hock Seafood were tasty, with a creative twist, making it an interesting place to to bring friends and family to for a casual get-together.
Ambience at Three's A Crowd is cozy and modern.
From the mere fraction of their treats I got to taste during this visit, I’m certainly dropping by again to tick more off the list if I’m ever in the area.

MeatHouse is a popular Halal certified steakhouse and burger joint, famous for their competitively priced signature tomahawk steaks.
We went back to Century Square recently to The MeatHouse by 18 Chefs, started by by Chef Benny Teo and the rest of the amazing team.
When it comes to culinary adventures, our journey through Tampines was nothing short of a gastronomic delight. One of the highlights of our visit was the charming stall, Jofa Meepok, where their signature minced meat noodles left a lasting impression with their unique combination of ingredients that set our taste buds tingling.
Albeit not as intense in flavour, JOFA Mee Pok’s style of bak chor mee is a very pleasant change from the norm thanks to their good execution of ingredients. Tampines is a bit of a distance for me but I’m definitely heading to JOFA Mee Pok whenever I’m in the area!
MediumRare could have been my number one go-to restaurant for satisfying my meat cravings.
a place that would work well for a convenient hangout in the heartlands for wallet-friendly steaks of a decent quality that corresponds well with the price.
A group of penguins is called "Huddle". The concept here is to have your friends over and gather at Tipsy Penguin. And of course, who can forget about alcohol when it's called "TIPSY" penguin. They have a variety of alcohol from draft beer, mocktails, shots, soju, red and white wine, sparkling, whiskey and house pour such as gin, vodka, tequila, etc.
How Playmade prepares their pearls also reflects their commitment towards ensuring the freshness and quality of their drinks. No artificial chemicals are added to their pearls, so their pearls are a healthier choice.
Personally, I enjoyed the pearls aka bubbles, which were the main highlight for PlayMade.
Anyway, those items above were fun, including not just the crackers with sambal, but also the mango with chili paste in the upper right corner.
Overall, enjoyed ourselves dining here very much, and I can foresee myself coming back for more dim sum and other dishes.
All in all, I think the concept works well for our local market, considering Korean style BBQ has been widely consumed since the 1990s down at Marina South, except they’re now readily available in airconditioned premises of malls in the heartlands.
