SeaQueen Restaurant Straits Quay Tanjung Tokong
Overall, the dim sum was good and the ambiance was also very comfortable. There is a multi-storey carpark at Straits Quay. As for the price, I would say it is considered reasonable judging by its location and ambiance. The ingredients used to prepare the dim sum were also very fresh. This is the ideal place for people living nearby to have dim sum without the hassle of going to town.
Here's the location.
Real Food
The star dish of the day was Sizzling Beef... tender, juicy and flavorful meat served on a sizzling hot pan... with Black Pepper sauce; not too Thai but definitely very delicious.
All in all, Chili Head Social Bar & Eatery definitely the Thai food dining experience in the heart of Tanjong Tokong.
Blue Mountain Blend (MYR 14.50) Comes well balanced with mellow and floral aroma
Anyway, that still doesn’t change my fondness towards this specialty coffee oasis. They still have a pretty decent choices of single origin beans where you could opt for your preferred brewing method; V60, Siphon or Aeropress.
Over here at Full of Beans, they are really serious about coffee, as reflected in their wide selections of beans, be it house beans or seasonal. Blend type is also available for those not so fussy about their cup of joe and gladly enjoy their milk-based coffee.
I think it’s pretty unlikely that we will come back to Nomiya, unless there is a radical change in the food. There has to be some better Japanese food options on Penang.
We got a little overly excited with the opening of Nomiya- American Izakaya at Straits Quay; the name Izakaya gives an impression that the gastropub serves light Japanese Tapas and alcohol but this particular place got it all wrong. Nomiya serves limited Izakaya-related menu (no Yakitori, no Ikayaki, no Karaage, no Japanese-styled Grilled Fish nor American Tapas) but a series of mains with above-average (rather hefty) price tags (yet the quality/ serving portion failed to commemorate with price). Not only the menu and quality were disappointing, the service was equally lackluster as well. Orders were wrongly taken and the service lead time was long either (took them more than 45 minutes to serve all orders). Probably they were still new, our dining experience was rather bad and we reckon they have plenty of rooms for improvements still.
The smaller size village chicken is a better choice. Accompanied by seasoning dipping powder, the chicken arrives at the table hanging up over a plate and left to be carve by the diners themselves or the server (pulling apart using hand gloves). The village chicken offers a firm juicy bite and pleasing marination flavors, and it tasted delicious without dipping in the seasoning powder.
So head over to The Shed at Straits Quay and enjoy the mouth-watering items and drinks on the menu while enjoying the sea breeze flowing.
Australian Cuisine hasn't had much exposure in Penang but we hope that will change with the opening of The Shed in Straits Quay. The Australian-influenced Pub & Restaurant offers a vast selection of grill meats as well as some Burgers and Pasta. The setup is more of a bistro with a stage behind (live music performances are available on certain days); those who prefer a more outdoorsy ambiance with cold sea breeze could opt to dine-in at the sea-front while those who prefer to sit nearer to the stage could opt for inside. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, most suitable to chill out with friends/ family over a few helpings of beers and wines (or even better, pair with their meat-focused dishes). Not a bad place for drinks and casual Australian barbecue meat but we thought the food lacked the "x" factor (not that we weren't pleased with the quality, just that the probability of returning is not high). The Shed Aussie Pub & Restaurant can be found right next to Spasso Milano, previous tenant was Weissbrau German Bistro.

Ah Wang Cafe is one of the Cafes that is hidden from the main road of Tanjung Tokong. Despite the hidden location, Ah Wang Cafe is well known to the public for its famous kaya butter toast and Hainanese coffee for 4 decades. The kaya here that is homemade, is very aromatic and rich in taste. The Hainanese coffee here is also very thick and nice in fragrance. Besides those classic delicacies, croissants, buns, and new mixed drinks are also the hot selling cakes here.
The specialty offered by Ah Wang cafeteria is their homemade kaya, sandwiching in between the breads. It comes with a custardy texture and the sweetness is well balanced. Often time, it comes accompanied with butter, or better known as Roti Kahwin. Their homemade kaya is available for sale too.
Ah Wang Cafe has been operated more than 30 years. It is famous due to it home made Kaya & toast. This cafe does not operate in air condition environment. UDA flat is sitting next to the sea, you can enjoy the sea wind while enjoying the toasted bread.
Service is good and price is reasonable.
Spaghetti Aglio olio with Smoked Duck (RM 21) is cooked to al-dente with a generous quantity of smoked duck. Sprinkles of chili flakes may be a tad overwhelming as it rendered the entire dish tasted flat. Overall, the spaghetti was a tad greasy to enjoy.
Rather a playful combination, the Creamy Tomato Thai Sauce Spaghetti did not really hit us. We found the combo a little odd at the beginning... it was a medley of sweet, savory, sour and spiciness in one go but it was somehow weird to us. It was something like Thai Chili sauce with Carbonara Cream sauce; the Chicken was disappointingly average. Though tender, it did not really leave us with a very deep impression.
Previously a chef at Miraku, Chef Takahiro Kinoshita and his wife opens their own restaurant at Vantage. Here's the location. Please call to make reservation before you visit during the weekends.
To sum it up, this is a good authentic Japanese restaurant which I will definitely pay them another visit for their set lunch menu (They serve ala carte during dinner). I give this restaurant extra points because they serve 100% authentic Japanese instead of commercialised fusion food.
Sifu Nyonya Cuisine is a spot to visit if you’re needing a taste of traditional Nyonya food.
Zi Tian Jiao Steamboat Restaurant at Tanjung Tokong was recently taken over by a local owner instead of foreigner. The dishes and pricing also have been revised and the ambiance and decoration are still maintained. The revision of the food makes this place easier to accept by locals as the spiciness is not as extreme. The price is also diners friendly after the revision. My personal favorites at this restaurant are Chang Sha White Meat and Spicy Chicken Cube.
You will get to enjoy different range of food from Jazz Hotel Buffet.
Jazz Feast is the all-day dining restaurant of Jazz Hotel Penang.
Offering the very best of local and international cuisines. The curated buffet spread offers diners to continually indulge in their preferred home cooked classics and also lots of new favorites.
Char Kuey Teow was good. It has a good WOK HEI taste and I requested to have it with duck egg instead of Chicken Egg. Yum!! My colleague doesn’t know that Char Kuey Teow with duck egg will be damn good until I told her and when she tried mine, she was like “ WOW, SO GOOD” Char Kuey Teow @ RM 7
Besides putting a lot of effort into maintaining the taste and smooth texture of the poached chicken, Mr Tan cooks the rice with a depth of fragrant chicken flavour using chicken stock.
All above taste awesome and super delicious, especially Bee Hun Soup which is extremely strong in flavor. The best part of Xiang Yun dishes is the “meat” are nicely done texture and flavor.
Xiang Yun Vegetarian Delight (香雲素食坊) is one of the few vegetarian shops in Penang that also have elements of a café.
Visiting Xiang Yun Vegetarian Delight 香云素食坊 for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised by its approach of using vegetarian ingredients and making them into palate pleasing meal. Located on the first floor of Vantage in Tanjong Tokong, Penang, this is the third Xiang Yun outlet to open in Penang, after two other locations at Kompleks Lebuh Nipah and I-Avenue.
So wait no longer, hurry to your nearest Hakka Tree outlet and place your orders.
Without doubt the dish the rings the best when it comes to Hakka cuisine will be Thunder Tea Rice, or simply known as Lei Cha (擂茶) due to its pungent and greenish taste but somehow the version at Hakka Tree managed to tame us, particularly the fried version. When the fried brown rice is mixed with all the other compounded ingredients, it gives a smooth and refreshing taste, coupled with a natural and delectable fragrance. The Thunder Tea Rice Soup version on the other hand, is more of a classic Lei Cha. Pour the soup accordingly based on your tolerance on the greenish taste.
We enjoy a good lunch here
