We had Black Rice Chicken with Soup and Vege, one of the signature Black Rice dishes; the Rice was nicely cooked with a firm, bouncy texture. The Chicken was lightly seasoned but could be more tender. The accompanying Coleslaw and Borscht Soup were delicious though

For wellness enthusiasts or vegans, finding a cafe in Penang offering vegan goodness has become increasingly easy with the opening of several outlets recently. Wholey Wonder Cafe on Jalan Gurdwara in George Town, Penang is a well known vegan cafe. Openings its doors in late 2016, the cafe is delightfully cozy with several styles of seating, including swing seats suspended from the ceiling. The decor is uniquely done up, with Spanish tiles and exposed walls. The cafe is a one-stop shop for all things healthy, with clever combinations of plant-based whole foods and a studio space for yoga upstairs.

Once an anomaly in Penang, vegetarians can now find aplenty of options in town. Nestled in the artsy space of Hin Bus Depot, Wholey Wonder is an excellent place for vegetarians and vegan. The menu is completely plant-based and the dishes are designed to appeal all palates. Options range from Pizza, Pies to home-made pastries; and the prices are well-commensurate with generous serving portion. The first floor is a space dedicated for Yoga classes and ground floor is where cafe located. Wholey Wonder has a nice relaxed atmosphere with vines crawling on the rustic walls, swings in front of the coffee bar and calming-soft background music; the place is not only good for a casual meal but over a cup of Joe as well.

Red Bean Ice Top (RM 23) was served in generous portion and topped up with Azuki beans and almond flakes. We enjoyed the well balanced sweetness introduced by the condensed milk and the sleek shaved ice that gentle to the tongue. Usage of Azuki beans did make the difference and reflect its Korean descent. It is best shared among 2 people to prevent fatigue arising from having too big bowl at one go.

If you are tired of the usual franchise cafes around, it's high time that you pay a visit to Cafe Droptop, a Korean-franchise brand that has recently landed on Penang. Cafe Droptop has heavy presence in Korea and in recent years, it has expanded its business operations to other Asian countries. Its first outlet in Penang can be found at Maritime Piazza. Like most franchise brands, Cafe Droptop offers a standard cafe menu with a Korean touch. The menu has a delicious mix of beverages and sweet treat; notable items include Maple Honey Toast, Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice) and Sweet Potato Latte. Prices are on the higher side but the modern-chic atmosphere is comfortable and cozy, definitely a place where you can spend some leisure time with your friends or family.

Not too sure if it meant to be a hipster spot, Le Cafe does not have a big and clear signage, there's a small one at the side door (smaller than its window) though. It occupies a corner lot at Bricklin Road, a stone's throw distance away from the no-through road of Jalan Tye Kee Yoon and GAMA Supermarket. The interior decor is minimalist with a little industrial finishing, at the end of the cafe is a comfortable space most suitable for hipster-portraiture shots. Le offers a small Toast-focused menu in the mornings and snacks with alcohols for the rest of the days. In the evenings, visitors may opt to chill out at the al-fresco alley right next to the cafe. It may be a fun place to hangout or for a cup of drinks but we thought the food menu was a little less-exciting...

Le Harlequin Restaurant

29C-01-19, Maritime Persiaran Karpal Singh 11600 Georgetown Penang

With a name like Le Harlequin Cafe one would expect the place to serve up Coffee or Cakes but in actual fact it brings stir-fried Seafood to the table.

  • kenhuntfood.com
  • 2018-04-16 00:00:00+00:00
Harlequin Combo and Crab Combo are both the most-ordered meals here. The former one comes with a concoction of Clams, Mussels, Yabbies, Prawns, Sausages and Corns while the latter choice has Crabs, Sausages and Corns. Both were dressed in a spicy, sweet-savory sauce. Both possessed strong smokiness; the flavor-combo was attractive at first but we thought it was too monotonous towards the end. The boldly seasoned Seafood was too hefty on the palate. Seafood was fresh and the fact that Mud Crabs with Roe were served, we thought the prices were well-justified. Good for novelty experience but not the type of food that I would want to eat on a regular basis.

Central Georgetown is a real food hub with no shortages of International cuisine... and that includes Vietnamese food. The name Pho Viet certainly rings a bell... and we were right, their specialty- Vietnamese Pho. The place was previously known as Yellow Lips (at Beach Street) but has since taken over by a new Vietnamese team that offers a variety of Vietnamese delicacies. Prices are on the higher side (20-30% higher than other Vietnamese joints in town) but they have certainly delivered the quality; service was impeccable as well. Not only did they offer complimentary dessert but they try to explain every dish in great details (they politely advised me on the correct way of eating Vietnamese Pho). If price is not your concern, do give this place a try.

The name "Moody Cow Cafe" is widely known amongst dessert lovers in Penang, for serving some of the best yet innovative Cheese Cakes in town (Salted Egg Cheese Cake/ Cempedak Cheese Cake are some of its signature products); the brand is also notoriously known to serve some of the most expensive Cheese Cakes in Penang. But the Cheese Cake specialist has recently ventured out of its norm... opening a new cafe- "Sweet Monster Cafe" at 4th Street Club of Tye Sin Street. From the most expensive Cheese Cake in town to.... potentially the most expensive Pie in town (from Rm 30 per piece); from "Cow" to... "Monster"; the only thing unchanged is their willingness to innovate and to come with new flavors and combination. The cafe offers a small Pasta menu with an array of home-made Pies and Cookies... with most of them come with hefty price tags. The exterior of Sweet Monster Cafe does not give a single hint on what the place would serve, once you are inside, you will find the classical visual arts and decorative of ancient European... with soft background music that we would not know how to appreciate. Nevermind on the ambiance, their Pies truly standout on their own...

A cafe made just for dog lovers, White Paws Mansion is a space dedicated entirely for canine lovers to cuddle and play with human's best friend. This is the perfect destination if you wish to be surrounded by furkids and enjoy a decent meal at the same time. White Paws Mansion has quite a number of dogs, while most of them bring Huskies, there are quite a few other breeds too. The very enthusiast and human-friendly canines are eager to meet new faces so as soon you push the door open, you will be greeted with their curious, lovable faces. The kitchen is not fully ready for now, so the variety on offer is small but I guess this is not really the place for indulgence, more like a space where you can mingle with the dogs.

Eat then Scream sounds like the ideal case for Eat Scream but we are not too sure whether it's for the good or otherwise. The newly opened cafe at Noordin Road, Georgetown offers a range of Indonesian delights and a series of Ice Ganefo (also known as Popsicle). The place is clean with simple setting but more than comfortable enough for a casual meal. It's a cafe dedicated entirely to serve a local menu, though at affordable-reasonable price range, we thought Eat Scream's menu is rather weak and they will need to come out with something more sturdy to compete with its competitors. As far as location is concerned, Eat Scream can be found opposite to Noordin Mews at Noordin Road.

Barely a week old, Matcho Cafe is an exceptional-odd one, not only that it occupies first floor of a vacant shop, the name (which sounds like Macho) is contrary to the femininity of the place. Pink is obviously the favorite color here- from the signage to the wall... even its signature dish ("Pink Toast"). But the quirky atmosphere has a strangely welcoming vibe, probably due to the well-arranged plants and neat-tidy setting. The soft launch menu is small, featuring some Toasts and Sandwiches; not exactly a place for a proper meal but more than decent enough for a casual snack or gathering.

Fromage lovers can now satiate their cravings for gooey, molten dairy at this newly opened cafe- Smile There Cafe. This tiny space at Macallum Street places great attention on toasted Cheese Sandwiches, ranging from the classic versions to meaty upgrades that contain Bacon, Ham or even Fried Chicken. Options are safe here, with no funky flavors but there are a couple of sweet Toasties worthy for your attention. It offers the same menu as the main branch, it has a variety of local vegetarian food with a creative twist. Notable highlights include Assam Lemak Laksa, Tofu with Cheese and Egg, Oyster Mushroom Porridge etc. Apart from being part of the meat-free community, the cafe occasionally hosts photography-related events. The cafe is located right next to the main KOMTAR bus terminal so it tends to be a little noisy but if you are someone who enjoys watching the busy scenes where bus riders hop on and off the buses, this is definitely the place you are looking for.

The Line Sandwich (RM 23) would be an ideal choice for those who loves to have sandwich. It comes in a bigger portion, having pork bacon, smoked salmon, eggs and hams as filling and covered with homemade bread that gives a full sensation. It is served with well cut French Fries too.

The Line's Seafood Aglio Olio was a little different compared to others... particularly the introduction of Salmon into the dish. While we enjoyed the al-dente texture of the Pasta, we found the dish a little fishy (stench) probably due to Salmon. It was bearable but that somehow discounted some marks. For light eaters, the Portobello & Sausage works. The Chicken Sausage was delicious.... well-seasoned with an addictive bouncy texture while the Sunny Side Up was well-cooked with runny Egg Yolk in the middle. Not to be missed is the Croissant.... extremely flaky and even better to go with the premium Butter.

Unlike classic Sushi, the Temari Bento consists of some new, funky Sushi. Coffee 1911 Restaurant

191, Jalan Magazine 10300 George Town Pulau Pinang Malaysia

Nanyang literally "Southern Ocean", otherwise known as the 'South Sea' or Southeast Asia. The term came into common usage in self-reference to the large ethnic Chinese migrant population in Southeast Asia. The last imperial dynasty of China ruling from 1644 to 1911. leading to an expansion of the Chinese communities in the Nanyang. As a result of historical migrations, colonisation by foreign powers, and its geographical position within its wider home region, Nanyang's culinary style in the present day is primarily a melange of traditions from its Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and ethnic Bornean citizens, with heavy to light influences from Thai, Portuguese, Dutch, and British cuisines, to name a few. This resulted in a symphony of flavours, making Nanyang cuisine highly complex and diverse. A common sight in Nanyang, menus often feature offerings like nasi lemak, boiled eggs, roti bakar, noodle dishes, bread and kuih, Fish and Chip, Chicken Chop and chicken rice. Also because of their proximity, historic migrations and close ethnic and cultural kinship. A kopitiam or kopi tiam is a traditional coffee shop patronised for meals and beverages, predominantly operated by Chinese proprietors and especially members of the Hainanese community. Tucked amist Georgetown, Aromas Cafe ensconced in one of the restored heritage houses along Tye Sin Street (also known as the 4th Street); Aromas is a simple cafe with small offering (both mains and desserts); for mains, expect to see a range of local delights such as Fried Rice, Fried Noodles/ Vermicelli Noodles and similar lackluster offering)... though we hear that they are of mediocre quality. Cake lovers might be overjoyed to know that Aromas offers an array of home-baked Cakes. The interior decor and their offering are of a huge mismatch; there are heavy Nyonya elements in the cafe- with seemingly priceless antiques and old-fashioned tiles. Nevertheless, we'd see the place as a dessert-eccentric cafe in lieu of a place offering mains (the mains lacked the pull-factor anyway); cakes-aside, be sure to check out their daily variety of fresh bakes (of pies and other sweet treats).
