Of the different kind of breads, we had a Smoked Duck Croque (RM 28) and it was impressive. We enjoyed the Croque that was served warm with fluffy texture, and the classic grilled Emmental cheese and bechamel sauce sandwiched between the croque that gives it a semi-rich sensation. Overall the pastry makes an excellent choice as a to start the day, or even a snack in between the meal. Absolutely love it.

"Les Grains" sure sounds like French but don't be fooled by the name, this newly opened oriental-fusion bakery specializes in baking Japanese-influenced bread and pastries. Bread lovers should not be new to the name- "Four Season" Bakery (previously at Straits Quay)... Les Grains is the rebranded version. All classic items from Four Season Bakery can now be found at Les Grains, everything seems unchanged except... the price tags, expect at least 20-40% hike in prices and for that very simple reason, this could be the most expensive bakery in Penang. Visitors may purchase the on-the-rack products or dine-in, there's a small Lunch menu available daily... featuring dishes like Salad, Sandwiches and Soup. Though dining here could put a dent on the wallet, Les Grains does not skimp on ingredients, the quality is still as superior as before.

Disappointed with the first two dishes, we were happy to find out that the Bacon Carbonara Pasta meets the standard. At least the cream sauce was nicely concocted and the smoky-meaty Bacon flavors were permeating the entire dish; the texture of the Fettuccine was expertly controlled either

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from barbequed vegetables, but what we got served at Beep Beep Q definitely impressed me. The crispy yam was delicious, sliced thinly and glazed with a sweet honey and savoury sauce and sprinkled with herbs. While the mushrooms had a lovely earthy flavour. While the brocolli and zucchinis were grilled just right to still have some bite to them. I honestly can’t remember the last time I enjoyed vegetables this much! 😛 The grilled veggies hinted at more delicious-ness to come and I could hardly wait!

Big Platter (Rm 32). When we first head of Big Platter, we were expecting a big portion but it was otherwise in reality. More like Tapas styled Sourdough served in 4 different toppings- Scrambled Egg, Hummus, caramelized Onions and sauteed Mushrooms. Every single one of them was unique in their own way but all of them were nicely done. The Sourdough was carefully toasted to shattering crisp while the toppings were meticulously cooked. Good for sharing and as light snacks in lieu of a proper meal.

Bibis Burger (RM 22) is one of the item in menu that keeps me coming back. Every component of the burger is well executed, from the English muffin buns, homemade party and a well poached sunny side-up. Although at first glance, the burger may looks unappetizing as it only occupies less than a quarter of the plate but the taste speaks otherwise. The English muffin is baked to crisp perfection, while the homemade patty is succulent and well seasoned. Meanwhile, the sunny side-up is poached to perfection that the runny egg yolks oozes with a gentle probe, then it coats the burger with a rich and nice taste. Of course, the mayonnaise and other sauces perfected the burger in overall.

Many would pass by Li Er Cafe without noticing its presence, it has got to be one of the low-key cafes in town. The name has been established for quite a few years and has since garnered an appreciate following. Most regular patrons are back for their Nyonya Kuih, particularly their catering service that offers outstanding presentation. They are able to customize your orders based on the number of diners and it goes as low as a few pax. While they are known for the Nyonya Kuih, their daily offering is not to be forsaken as well; the daily specials include traditional-dishes with a modern touch. Notable highlights include Nasi Kerabu, Tom Yum Bee Hoon, Nasi Lemak Special, Nasi Kunyit, Jawa Mee etc.... at unbeatable prices. Though not everything is praise-worthy, the effort in plating and presentation is applaudible. Li Er Cafe is housed in one of the shop houses along Jalan Burmah, facing the junction to Bangkok Lane.

If you are old enough or a huge fan of Pasta, chances of you hearing the name "Get Em Smack" could be high; previously at Penang Times Square, "Get Em Smack" was said to serve some of the best Pasta in town! Business operation was then ceased due to some reasons and now, they have returned as "Casa Calda Cafe". The newly opened cafe at Bangkok Lane preserves some of the regulars' favorite Pasta dishes (except that prices have gone up) while additional offering such as Breakfast items and Desserts have also added to the menu. Patois Kafe & Bistro has got to be the most curious restaurant in Penang ever, the place is usually closed and only opens during certain hours. We have made multiple attempts to visit the place but to no avail. Dining in Patois is quite an experience, the menu is small but the service is amiable. We were warmly greeted by a charming-motherly lady; she was concerned if we knew what to order (since it was our first visit), if we were comfortably seated and if the air-conditioner was blowing at the right temperature. We were certainly well-taken care of. The place is unpretentious sans the unnecessary frills, it feels exactly dining at home. Service and ambiance aside, the European-Fusion menu is standard-average with some hits and misses. Patois Kafe & Bistro is located at Service Road, off Burmah Road (right next to Chow Thye Road).

This curious black-painted building in the neighborhood (of Medan Lim Cheng Teik) looks severe, especially with a small signage, the suspense gets stronger. Step in the cafe and you will be enwrapped in a heavy metal room (in shades of black and white) with jail door and red bricks, the industrial vibe here in bold. The two-week old cafe has an average-small menu but given that they are still new, the place is worth a second look. Pie Harbour - G Hotel Restaurant

What an exciting journey it’s been these past three plus years. Our success would be inaudible without the constant love and support given to us by our customers. And because you guys deserve nothing but our best, we’ll definitely strive to continue serving the best pies (and more) available in town! Since venturing forth not too long ago, we’ve also increased our repertoire to include sandwiches, western meals, asian delights, tasty treats and desserts and of course our fan-favourite freshly brewed coffees. This extension of flavours and delectable dishes really represent our dedication to be the cafe of choice, where you, our diners, will get to explore and experience some of the most mouthwatering culinary delights fresh from our kitchen. Nonetheless, most of you know us as the best joint in town for that flaky, crusty, puffy sensation that’s the signature of every Pie Harbour pie. Made with extra love (and the best puff pastry, of course) the pie you’ve come to love is perfect in so many ways.

Sea Brew is a rare occasion; previously a hawker place and now turned into a cozy Cafe-Bar space. The facade is inviting, with wide and bright entrance; Sea Brew comes across as a cafe due to its setting but amazingly, the bewilder menu comprises of Steamboat Hot Pot, Western Cuisine and some home-made sweet treats, with options of alcoholic beverages (big menu but not all were available on our visit). Lao Jie Fang, a familiar brand name in the traditional confectioneries and native local products in Penang has ventured out of its usual business scope... opening a Coffee Shop (otherwise known as Kopitiam) at Sunrise Gurney, a new commercial building right next to Jalan Birch and Gurney Drive. It serves up some Malaysian/ Singaporean staples such as Kaya Butter Toast, Nyonya Kuih, Nasi Lemak etc. It certainly reminds us of establishments like Old Town and Papa Rich except that it offers slightly different variety as compared to the duo. Might be good place for a quick afternoon tea but the dishes were a tad too common with elusive quality for us.
