Unlike any other places that serve Western Breakfast, AM Noshery serves breakfast differently. The 'Breakfast in a Cup' concept is popular in other countries but not in Penang but that is exactly what makes AM Noshery stands out amongst the rest. Leveraged on the brilliant idea of combining Bacon with Egg, the unassuming cafe within the neighborhood of Island Glades has proven to be one of the favorite spots for the parents to convince their young children eating breakfast. Those with stubborn Asian palate are not forsaken here, AM Noshery offers Asian staples like Rice and Noodles but ironically, we found the noodle dish out-shined its signature AM cups.

For wellness enthusiasts or vegans, finding a cafe in Penang offering vegan goodness has become increasingly easy with the opening of several outlets recently. Wholey Wonder Cafe on Jalan Gurdwara in George Town, Penang is a well known vegan cafe. Openings its doors in late 2016, the cafe is delightfully cozy with several styles of seating, including swing seats suspended from the ceiling. The decor is uniquely done up, with Spanish tiles and exposed walls. The cafe is a one-stop shop for all things healthy, with clever combinations of plant-based whole foods and a studio space for yoga upstairs.

Once an anomaly in Penang, vegetarians can now find aplenty of options in town. Nestled in the artsy space of Hin Bus Depot, Wholey Wonder is an excellent place for vegetarians and vegan. The menu is completely plant-based and the dishes are designed to appeal all palates. Options range from Pizza, Pies to home-made pastries; and the prices are well-commensurate with generous serving portion. The first floor is a space dedicated for Yoga classes and ground floor is where cafe located. Wholey Wonder has a nice relaxed atmosphere with vines crawling on the rustic walls, swings in front of the coffee bar and calming-soft background music; the place is not only good for a casual meal but over a cup of Joe as well.

We enjoyed the well balanced sweetness introduced by the condensed milk and the sleek shaved ice that gentle to the tongue. Usage of Azuki beans did make the difference and reflect its Korean descent. It is best shared among 2 people to prevent fatigue arising from having too big bowl at one go.

If you are tired of the usual franchise cafes around, it's high time that you pay a visit to Cafe Droptop, a Korean-franchise brand that has recently landed on Penang. Cafe Droptop has heavy presence in Korea and in recent years, it has expanded its business operations to other Asian countries. Its first outlet in Penang can be found at Maritime Piazza. Like most franchise brands, Cafe Droptop offers a standard cafe menu with a Korean touch. The menu has a delicious mix of beverages and sweet treat; notable items include Maple Honey Toast, Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice) and Sweet Potato Latte. Prices are on the higher side but the modern-chic atmosphere is comfortable and cozy, definitely a place where you can spend some leisure time with your friends or family.

Not too sure if it meant to be a hipster spot, Le Cafe does not have a big and clear signage, there's a small one at the side door (smaller than its window) though. It occupies a corner lot at Bricklin Road, a stone's throw distance away from the no-through road of Jalan Tye Kee Yoon and GAMA Supermarket. The interior decor is minimalist with a little industrial finishing, at the end of the cafe is a comfortable space most suitable for hipster-portraiture shots. Le offers a small Toast-focused menu in the mornings and snacks with alcohols for the rest of the days. In the evenings, visitors may opt to chill out at the al-fresco alley right next to the cafe. It may be a fun place to hangout or for a cup of drinks but we thought the food menu was a little less-exciting...

Le Harlequin Restaurant

29C-01-19, Maritime Persiaran Karpal Singh 11600 Georgetown Penang

With a name like Le Harlequin Cafe one would expect the place to serve up Coffee or Cakes but in actual fact it brings stir-fried Seafood to the table.

  • kenhuntfood.com
  • 2018-04-16 00:00:00+00:00
Harlequin Combo and Crab Combo are both the most-ordered meals here. The former one comes with a concoction of Clams, Mussels, Yabbies, Prawns, Sausages and Corns while the latter choice has Crabs, Sausages and Corns. Both were dressed in a spicy, sweet-savory sauce. Both possessed strong smokiness; the flavor-combo was attractive at first but we thought it was too monotonous towards the end. The boldly seasoned Seafood was too hefty on the palate. Seafood was fresh and the fact that Mud Crabs with Roe were served, we thought the prices were well-justified. Good for novelty experience but not the type of food that I would want to eat on a regular basis.

Eat then Scream sounds like the ideal case for Eat Scream but we are not too sure whether it's for the good or otherwise. The newly opened cafe at Noordin Road, Georgetown offers a range of Indonesian delights and a series of Ice Ganefo (also known as Popsicle). The place is clean with simple setting but more than comfortable enough for a casual meal. It's a cafe dedicated entirely to serve a local menu, though at affordable-reasonable price range, we thought Eat Scream's menu is rather weak and they will need to come out with something more sturdy to compete with its competitors. As far as location is concerned, Eat Scream can be found opposite to Noordin Mews at Noordin Road.

There is no better time to enjoy a good magical frozen dessert in a place like Malaysia with summer lasts all year long. Penang has no shortage of good desserts but we sure would not mind a new addition to the Penang cafe-dessert scene. The Craftisan is a new kid on the block and has just had its grand opening in early July 2017. Housed on the first floor of Soul Cafe, The Craftisan is an Ice Cream parlor that focuses on Gelato-inspired sweet treats. It gets points for the inspired creativity- for infusing Tea into their Ice Cream. The selection is full of Asian-leaning flavors- from refreshingly light Jasmine, Matcha to bolder ones like Tie Kuan Yin (Chinese Oolong Tea) and occasionally exotic delights like Durian Ice Cream. The cafe is brilliantly spaced and brightly lit, with clean and comfortable couches forming the homey-intimate atmosphere. It is a place best to chill out with friends over some sweet treats (if you do not mind the slightly higher price points).

Barely a week old, Matcho Cafe is an exceptional-odd one, not only that it occupies first floor of a vacant shop, the name (which sounds like Macho) is contrary to the femininity of the place. Pink is obviously the favorite color here- from the signage to the wall... even its signature dish ("Pink Toast"). But the quirky atmosphere has a strangely welcoming vibe, probably due to the well-arranged plants and neat-tidy setting. The soft launch menu is small, featuring some Toasts and Sandwiches; not exactly a place for a proper meal but more than decent enough for a casual snack or gathering.

Step in the cafe and you will be pleasantly amazed by how cozy the place is. While every effort was made to ensure the place lives up to the classy Italian theme but we did not think the Italian element was strong enough. In fact, we spotted a wallpaper with Chinese characters. On the menu, it offers quite a wide variety of Italian fare, ranging from Antipasto, Pizza, Pasta, Grills and even classic Italian desserts. The famous Puppy Chocolate Mousse does not come cheap... selling at Rm 30 per piece. It served to us frozen hard so the Mousse had the texture of Ice Cream. It was pretty chocolaty and delicately sweetened. It gets pretty surfeit due to its creamy nature so sharing is wiser. Was it worth it? Only for novelty experience, a hefty piece of Chocolate Mousse is not something you would want to eat on a regular basis.

Coffee 1911 Restaurant

191, Jalan Magazine 10300 George Town Pulau Pinang Malaysia

Nanyang literally "Southern Ocean", otherwise known as the 'South Sea' or Southeast Asia. The term came into common usage in self-reference to the large ethnic Chinese migrant population in Southeast Asia. The last imperial dynasty of China ruling from 1644 to 1911. leading to an expansion of the Chinese communities in the Nanyang. As a result of historical migrations, colonisation by foreign powers, and its geographical position within its wider home region, Nanyang's culinary style in the present day is primarily a melange of traditions from its Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and ethnic Bornean citizens, with heavy to light influences from Thai, Portuguese, Dutch, and British cuisines, to name a few. This resulted in a symphony of flavours, making Nanyang cuisine highly complex and diverse. A common sight in Nanyang, menus often feature offerings like nasi lemak, boiled eggs, roti bakar, noodle dishes, bread and kuih, Fish and Chip, Chicken Chop and chicken rice. Also because of their proximity, historic migrations and close ethnic and cultural kinship. A kopitiam or kopi tiam is a traditional coffee shop patronised for meals and beverages, predominantly operated by Chinese proprietors and especially members of the Hainanese community. The owner sometimes offer more specialised dishes beyond standard Chinese kopitiam fare. Typical beverages include malted chocolate drink considered iconic to Malaysians of all ages, as well as coffee and tea. Diners would use slang terms specific to kopitiam culture to order and cust

Tucked amist Georgetown, Aromas Cafe ensconced in one of the restored heritage houses along Tye Sin Street (also known as the 4th Street); Aromas is a simple cafe with small offering (both mains and desserts); for mains, expect to see a range of local delights such as Fried Rice, Fried Noodles/ Vermicelli Noodles and similar lackluster offering)... though we hear that they are of mediocre quality. Cake lovers might be overjoyed to know that Aromas offers an array of home-baked Cakes. The interior decor and their offering are of a huge mismatch; there are heavy Nyonya elements in the cafe- with seemingly priceless antiques and old-fashioned tiles. Nevertheless, we'd see the place as a dessert-eccentric cafe in lieu of a place offering mains (the mains lacked the pull-factor anyway); cakes-aside, be sure to check out their daily variety of fresh bakes (of pies and other sweet treats).
