This round we also got to try the Wantan Mee @ RM9 and I was happy to see pun fei sau (half lean-half fat) cut of char siew given without requesting for it. Not only that, the noodles also came topped with crispy chee yau char...and that's why you can taste the fragrant lard oil in the sauce that's used to toss the noodles in. It may not be among the better ones that I've had, but overall, still a decent plate of wantan mee.

A plate of nasi lemak (MYR 3.50+) and one deep fried chicken thigh (MYR 5+) making it a total of MYR 8.50+ (MYR 9 nett). The rice is soft with a tinge of coconut milk. For my friend who do not eat much sambal, the rice can be a bit dry as this stall does not have any other curry gravy to go with the rice. For those who will mix the rice with the sambal, they won't find the rice to be dry.

Most of the yong tau fu we had were decent but not really outstanding. The only item that was special enough to be memorable was the ‘sar kot’ (stuffed turnip) – mainly because it was my first time having it, and we don’t get this in KL. But then again, I get comments saying there are plenty of other places that make tastier ‘sar kot’.

Ordered a Bento set of Japanese curry rice with fried ika (squid). The portion was just right for a medium eater, although I think for the price, they could have given a few more pieces of squid. The curry was mild and sweet, with soft chunks of potato and meat which went really well with rice, while the squid was deep fried and seasoned well, lending the dish an element of crunchiness. Sides included cabbage salad, miso soup and a slice of watermelon. A satisfying meal for a reasonable price.

Coincidentally I was on the hunt for Sarawak Laksa for the past 2 weeks. My usual fix are at Charlie Cafe, Makan Time and Salted but none of these are near any LRT/MRT stations. Then I read on a FB group that the NZX (Niuzexui) area is being revitalised, or rather, more specifically the NX Food Court Centre. I saw postings about the Penang duck egg char kuey teow, Sarawak kueh chiap, kolo mee and the Sarawak Laksa. And comments were favourable too, so I hopped quickly to try it myself.

SL had the ayam rendang and sambal sotong which came up to RM8.50. On the whole, the nasi lemak dishes were good and well cooked (the beef and sotong were tender) but nothing to write home about. We felt the sambal is too mild and could use a spicier kick. Nevertheless, it’s still worth checking out because the portion is large and the price is reasonable.

The cockles are served fresh and only to be dunked with chili with peanut sauce provided, and people who has an affection toward would definitely delighted to see such a generous portion of cockles. On the other hand, the fried dumplings were warm and crispy, with a generous stuffing of minced meat inside. Although I still prefer steamed dumplings at times, the dumplings were very much satisfactory. It all looked too simple with all the ingredients in place, yet the taste was far from simple and indeed it was unrelentingly good. Red Garden Food Paradise 红园美食坊 Restaurant

20, Lebuh Leith 10000 George Town Pulau Pinang Malaysia

Located right smack in the middle of the town sits Red Garden Food Paradise where it is a One Stop Penang International Hawker Centre offering all of Penang’s famous fares. This already much sought after hawker food haven was officially opened by Penang Tourism & Environment Exco YB Teng Chang Yeow in January 2007. Red Garden Food Paradise is conveniently located at Penang Upper Road near most of the town hotels and thus easily accessible by both locals and tourists. The ambience is conducive for friends and families alike to sit down either for a get together dinner or simply for a tete-a-tete over some drinks. Not surprisingly, at Red Garden Food Paradise, you will not only find the best local food of Penang but also international fares to cater to the discerning taste buds of our foreign friends from abroad. There is a stage where professional singers and bands will be engaged to entertain the dining crowd and make the environment even livelier. Parking woes in Penang would pose no problem for patrons as Red Garden Food Paradise has a car park beside this Hawker Centre with ample parking space. There is a shopping arcade in the hawker centre itself and it offers local handicrafts and items, ranging from clothing to toys including packed food items, products of Penang which make good souvenirs and they are all reasonably priced. Good ambience, cleaner environment and best Penang hawker food, which is what you will find in Red Garden Food Paradise.

White curry mee in Red Garden is really a hidden gem that not many people know! The taste is rich, and after adding the chili it makes a sleek finishing for the soup. Strongly recommended if you happen to visit Red Garden. Lor Mee is another great option too, having a aromatic soup with decent fluidity despite it being a starch soup. Add the chili and garlic to give it an elevation in terms of taste.
