For a no-frills Thai Mookata experience, look no further than this curious space at Automall, Karpal Singh Drive. Affordably priced at Rm 19.90 for a basic set (serves 2), budget watchers can now enjoy delicious Thai Steamboat at unbeatable price, well-complemented with sea breeze. The simple set includes some basic meat balls, greens and meat but those with a deeper pocket can always top up extra few dollars for the additional spread. Bangkok Garden BBQ is not air-conditioned and instead, it relies on the sea breeze so the best time to visit would probably in the evening. The serving portion is not that great but it would be perfectly fine to be served as supper in lieu of a proper meal. Bangkok Garden BBQ can be found right next to Sae Ma Eul Korean BBQ Restaurant.

Consider yourself incredibly lucky if you are a fan of Sze Chuan food, more options for you right now with the opening of Hero Pot at Karpal Singh Drive. Belongs to the "Mix", a convenient store that sells fancy imported goods from China, Japan, Korea etc, Hero Pot offers Sze Chuan-influenced dishes and of course... Sze Chuan "Mala" Hot Pot. But everything is designed to be ostentatious here, when you are about to enter the premise, you will be greeted by servers wearing traditional Chinese outfit. They will bring you to your table and before you are seated, they will shout "heroes are coming"... an awkward start to a meal. The menu is Hot Pot-centric, with a few classic Chinese snacks. Service is attentive but do not expect things to be cheap here, expect to fork out at least Rm 50 per pax for a decent meal here. Not particularly impressive as far as taste is concerned... if you must know.

On a lunch visit, we had the Sashimi Platter, Iberico Pork Ribs along with the Oriental Red Seafood Signature Hot Pot which is clearly a must. The broth of the hot pot was rich and sweet, drawing flavors from our chosen ingredients of Boiled King Crab (RM248/ 600 grams), Fresh Sea Cucumber (RM35/ 200 grams), Red Lion Fillet (RM11.76/ by weight – RM120 per kg), and Frozen Fish Maw (RM15/ 100 grams).

Oriental Red Seafood's Signature Hot Pot is almost a must-order item and its a commonly seen order on almost every table. As long as you have purchased some items for the Hot Pot, the broth will be complimentary- you need not pay an additional fee for it. We were also told that the broth is imported from Japan on a daily basis and unlimited top up is possible. The broth is seasoned and carried a bold Umami taste but can be a little salty towards the end, especially if you are cooking a lot of Seafood in it.

The newly opened Viet Food Vietnamese restaurant is certainly not short of Vietnamese competition in Jelutong area but in terms of variety and execution, it stands on its own. Housed in one of the shop houses in Taman Kheng Tian (behind Old Town Perak Road), Viet Food is not an easy spot that catches the eye. The interior is cramped and filled with Vietnamese staff that struggles to speak local dialects, not even basic English; but the place has a good showing of Vietnamese locals. We were not surprised. The menu is large enough that it took us a while to browse through; the quintessential Vietnamese eats are there as well as scatters of the unexpected (such as Balut, Banh Mi, Fish Cakes and authentic Vietnamese sweet treats). Bounteous offering, budget-friendly, authentic and top-notch food; one of the best places for Vietnamese delicacies in Penang.

There are a few types of soup based to choose from, ranging from the non-spicy authentic chicken pot to the fiery hot Si Chuan Spicy Chicken Pot(Half Chicken). Though initially the price tag (RM 68) may give you a surprise but it is worth the value - it comes with half free-range chicken. Even though smaller in size, the free-range chicken meat was so tender and it absorbed the essence from the soup, giving a great level of satisfaction. As a matter of fact, the best way to enjoy the steamboat is to have the chicken first before adding in other ingredients, as this will ensure you savour the most original taste of the soup.

For a basic pot of soup, it comes with seaweed, deep fried bean curb, fish meat…and others. This Teo Chew steamboat is definitely different from the famous mainland as its not milky soup base, and the soup is very sweet by itself with fish meat and yam, we cannot imagine the amount of ingredients being used and hours to cook in it. All the seafood ingredient that being serve are fresh and good as the owner believe in serving fresh ingredient to his customer.

The Hot Pot specialist is well-known for those in the know, rumor says that the Chef originates from the same kitchen as Yi Bing Qing Fish Head Steamboat (at Nagore Road). Chuan Yee serves the communal broth in milky white hue, with the Deep Fried Fish (Head) served separately. Sets are pre-fixed but those with big appetite can always have the extra orders. Prices may seem on the higher side but they commensurate with large serving portion. The demand is high here so making advance reservation may be a wise choice. Chuan Yee Charcoal Steamboat is tucked in one of the heritage houses at Kek Chuan Road, off Macalister Road, Georgetown.

Being a steamboat-obsessed community, Penangites welcome all sorts of steamboat or hotpots; evidently seen from the forever-increasing steamboat restaurants in town. Red Stone Hotpot is one of the new members that pays homage to the tongue-numbing Sze Chuan hotpot but their concept of serving Hotpot is unusual and distinctive. Unlike its competitors, Red Stove does not serve the soup/ food as it is; instead, the Chef cooks in front of you... from scratch. Dining here is like being at a cook show. The Chef prepares the ingredients and starts the cooking process in front of the diners... from cooking until seasoning, diners get to witness the entire process. Commendable is the use of effective tools to shield the oil from spilling over to diners. The flavors are good but not mind-blowingly amazing but it is definitely a fun place to visit for the novelty experience.

More and more China Chinese Steamboat/ Hot Pot restaurants sprung up in Penang recently, Chuan Style Steamboat occupies a prominent spot at Bagan Jermal (T-junction of Mount Erskine and Burmah Road). The restaurant has huge posters on "Sze Chuan Face-Changing Opera" (变脸) and it does not take long for one to figure out what type of cuisine they are serving. The selections here are huge, ranging from the classic Sze Chuan Spicy Hot Pot to some uncommon Soups as well as some familiar Sze Chuan dishes. But most diners are here for its Hot Pot; the price points are however, not as wallet-friendly as budget-watchers would have hoped. A standard meal here is easily more than Rm 50 per pax so the place is more for occasions in lieu of regular meals.

More options for seasoned Steamboat diners at Raja Uda, Guan Xian Lao Ma (灌县老妈砂锅串串) is one of the biggest names when it comes to Steamboat/ Hot Pot in Sze Chuan, China. The restaurateur obtained local franchisee license to operate an extended branch here... at Raja Uda Commercial City Centre, Butterworth (same row as Pentagon 5). The brand is known to dish out Sze Chuan Ma-La Spicy Hot Pot with Skewers... the same concept is being brought to the branch in Raja Uda as well. The restaurant is nicely decorated, step in the restaurant and you will be instantly teleported to China... even the stools, wall paper, lighting and tables; all resemble the characteristics of old Chinese decorations. The menu is fairly large, diners can either order by filling up the order form or simply head to the display fridge and help themselves with the skewers (Rm 1.80 per stick). There are of course, some standard items but only a handful of soup bases available.

One of the dish that we miss the most from Taiwan would be their Minced Pork Rice. Feed Me Love's Hot Pot series would satisfy any big eaters, the serving portion is huge with a basket of Hot Pot ingredients as well as a bowl of White Rice. We had the Collagen Hot Pot... the seemingly healthy broth was delicious with a mild vegetable-sweetness but we did not feel a strong presence of the protein (Collagen), as though we were having ordinary healthy Hot Pot broth. The year end rainy season is surely an unexpected encounter; as temperature drops, the urge to have something comforting and tummy-warming gets stronger. One of the best ways to warm the body up is to enjoy a sumptuous Hot Pot. New kid on the block- Zhong Sheng Bowl Soup Hot Pot (一碗汤) housed in one of the shop houses opposite to Queensbay Mall; offers an array of Chinese healthy Hot Pots. The whole place is very "Chinese"... whether the interior decor (Chinese wooden tables, chairs and wallpapers... even the background music) to the menu or even the servers. It appears that the soup bases for the Hot Pots are carefully crafted to bring medicinal and invigorating effects to the body. The set package for the Hot Pot Soup is great value for the money but some of the additional ingredients may cost a little more; the soup variety here is rather unique and definitely worth a look.

Chicken Hot Pot 鸡公煲 (Rm 24.90) The small portion of Chicken Hot Pot was just nice enough for the 2 of us. There is a range of spiciness you can choose from. We picked the middle one and thought it was just alright (not that spicy for us). The seasoning was bold, in fact, a little too bold for us (we were then told that it would be better to enjoy with Rice). The Chicken on the other hand, was tender and well-cooked. Flavors were well-absorbed and they were quite generous with the condiments (Capsicum, Onions, Carrots etc).

We did not try any of the Sze Chuan-influenced Hot Pot but a classic Herbal Cordyceps Chicken Pot instead. The Chicken (and Herbs) are cooked by order, within 15 minutes, the rich, flavorful Chicken Pot would be ready. The broth turns from milky white to yellow and diners waiting in anticipation will be caught in a whiff of alluring aroma of Chinese Herbs. We love how in dept the flavors were and the Chicken pieces were most delicious and tender. As we were about to finish, we requested the server to refill the Chicken broth and made it into Steamboat. For the portion, we thought the prices were well-justified.

The vegetarian restaurant at Arena Curve (those shop houses right next to Olive Tree Hotel) has a menu entirely dedicated for vegetarians; if you are in a rush or steamboat is not your kind of thing, there are some simple, staple Malaysian (vegetarian) delights as well (namely Nasi Lemak, Koay Teow Th'ng, Chee Cheong Fun and some rice dishes). Their signature dish however, is their personalized vegetarian Steamboat.
