One can't miss out having this Dobin Mushi – Tea Pot Clear Soup. It is a clear broth with a nice clean taste. We like how it was presented and how to get the maximum taste. You start off drinking the clear soup from the teacup as it is. This ensures that you taste out the natural flavour of the soup.

Asari Hoiru Butter Yaki This mediocre looking dish was a gem! Immerse in an uplifting olfactory experience upon unveiling what's hidden underneath the aluminium foil. The soup was so fragrant we could almost felt it on our tongue. Taking a sip brought us to paradise. The clear soup was sweet, but not in an artificial manner, attributed by the freshness of the seafood, and ended with an interesting buttery taste, which was quite unexpected of any Japanese cuisine. One sip would definitely have you longing for more.

The KIMI-YA Special Roll is also one of my favorite dish on that day. The rolls are made of avocado, omelette and cucumber roll with garlic mayonnaise sauce on seared tuna and black caviar topping. The avocado and cucumber roll brought out the flavor of the seared tuna and caviar very well and the savory taste from the garlic mayonnaise sauce pairs nicely with the sweetness of the avocado. I would definitely order this again next time.

One of the signature dishes here is the Wagyu Steak (120g). The best way to savour this premium cut is to just have it pan-grilled and our preferred done-ness is “medium” to “medium-rare”. Just look at that superb marbling and those juicy tender slices are to die for! They practically melt in the mouth.

Four thick slices of fluffy-sweet tamago, blanketed by savoury-creamy mentaiko that's blowtorched to smoky perfection and (this time) even finished with a sprinkling of salty furikake for an absolutely yummy combination of savoury-creamy-sweet flavours. Explanation from wiki online: "Poke (Hawaiian for "to section" or "to slice or cut") is a raw fish salad served as an appetizer in Hawaiian cuisine, and sometimes as a main course". In recent years, some restaurants in USA have started making poke bowls which includes rice or some other healthy options like quinoa or cous cous and the trend has reached here. In the poke bowl above, there are tiny cubes of raw salmon marinated in a slightly spicy sauce, slices of cucumbers, guacamole, calrose rice, furikake, bits of seaweeds, sesame seeds, ebiko mixed with some sort of vinegar so it is very flavourful with lots of different tastes going on at the same time.

Omugi Soup with Matcha Ice Cream RM18.00 is the most mind-boggling hot dessert that we encounter during our dessert session in Kakigori. This set comes with a bowl of hot barley with green tea ice cream and toasted peanut as toppings (omugi soup), a bowl of adzuki red bean and green tea mochi, plus a flower scent sweet syrup. The actual proper way to enjoy these hot dessert is to mix everything into the Omugi soup then voila. However, you can actually taste it separately beforehand and mix everything up eventually for a better tasting experience. Omugi Soup tastes toothsome and especially flavourful with a strong combination of green tea and adzuki bean on each spoonful. A very good alternative sweet treats for those who suffer sensitive teeth or older age group of people (who dislike cold stuff).

The ramen is quite good but in general the soup is more salty than other ramen restaurants. You can get a bowl of soup base to add on to your ramen to reduce the saltiness.

We ordered one of their best seller ramen “Miyabi Shoyu Ramen” RM23.50 serves in a thick brownish soup made with fermented soybean, ramen noodles, braised eggs, char siew, and flavored bamboo shoots. We are rather surprised to find out that the ramen noodle used is dan-dan noodles (担担面) which produces chewier texture, soyu broth tasted like being stir-fried before, very enriched with the fragrant aroma from the wok (锅气). The Miyabi Shoyu Ramen was delicious except the aftertaste for being too salty, the chef might have neglected that we do not have the winter season (heavy flavor) in our country perhaps? 😉

One day I'd like to come here to try their dinner (interestingly, they cook on crystal platters, allegedly for more evenly spread heat), but I definitely can't be the one paying.

For the average Singaporean, I would recommend a spiciness level of 10-15. It lets you get a taste of the spice without it overpowering the flavour of the soup. We’ll be back to try the other soup bases in the future!

Shin Nihon 新日本焼肉党 Restaurant

No 26 Jalan 24/70A Desa Sri Hartamas 50480 Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

It is said that about 60 years ago in Japan, the current style of charcoal grilling beef began. In the 60 years since then, various restaurants have worked hard, continuing to study improvements in breeding cattle, selecting suitable meat for grilling, aging methods, slicing perfect cuts, creating sauces and seasonings that pair well with beef and so on. We also have a flagship store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo where we constantly strive to improve on a daily basis to provide delicious grilled beef at a reasonable price. We wanted Malaysians as well as Japanese people living in Kuala Lumpur to be able to enjoy the same style of charcoal grilled beef that we offer in Japan, therefore we have opened this location here in Kuala Lumpur. For our Japanese customers, we are aiming to achieve a level of quality that they will never have to say, “When I return to Japan, I want to eat delicious charcoal grilled beef” because they will have it right here in Kuala Lumpur. Expertly selected beef, aging methods, preparation, cutting, as well as the flavor of sauce and our accompanying dishes suitably paired with grilled meat – we invite you to enjoy all of these fine details catered to creating the perfect dining experience for you.

If you've never tried beef tongue before, I urge you to do so here at Shin Nihon. We were well-impressed with the atsugiri tan (RM35), also known as salted thick cut tongue. It is one of the most popular items here and it's easy to see why. Even in its raw form, the sight of the beautiful marbling is enough to make us drool. The staff will season it with salt and then grill it on the charcoal grill in front of you. The beef tongue used here is Wagyu, so the meat has a slight bite then gives way to a melt-in-the-mouth texture. So so good!

To start things off, I had the Thick Cut Tongue (RM35.00). It took a quick 3-minutes to grill, and let me tell you this - the two chunks of tongue were amazing. It had great textures that was fatty yet flavorsome. I'd highly recommend ordering this here.

Earl Grey Mojito RM7.90 This drink also came highly recommended by the barista and I can clearly see why. This alcohol-free drink is absolutely refreshing! The earl grey tea added a crisp flavour to the traditional mojito! Underneath the minty citrus blend, the drink ended with a creamy base note of early grey which lingers for a bit. Quite an interesting adventure for the taste bud, but definitely a good one.

Verdict: As I’ve mentioned in the beginning, the Shabu Shabu Set with top notch quality ingredient felt value for money, hence decent for its price. If Shabu Shabu not your thing, try out their Kushiyaki and pair with their selection of sakes or beers. I was told that special Binchō-tan (備長炭) or white charcoal is used for the grilling. The charcoal is completely odourless which enabling you to enjoy the natural flavours of the food.
