At Komichi Tea House, a new Japanese cafe tucked away at a quiet corner of Lorong Toh Aka, where Matcha is everywhere and everything. For the uninitiated, Matcha (or known as Japanese Green Tea) is making its name in the food and beverage scene worldwide in recent years; the flavor is more intense than Chinese Green Tea, with a bolder bitter end. Komichi is one specialist when it comes to Matcha, the entire cafe is Matcha-centric. One of the partners' father owns a Tea Farm in Japan and needless to say, the Japanese Green Tea is directly imported from there. The daughter who is know residing in Penang owns a cafe-dream and now, managed to turn the dream into reality. The menu is very Matcha-focused with an array of serious Matcha beverages and some Matcha-infused home-bakes. Nothing spectacular about the interior decor but rather, an unpretentious and earnest place to enjoy a good serving of Matcha delights.

Of course, the dish we enjoyed tonight will be Tiger King Prawn Mentaiko (RM 38). Featuring 2 giant king prawns per serving with the flesh topped with mentaiko and slightly charred, this snack unleashes wonderful fragrance and the plumpy pranws are delectable. It did come with a slight prawn scent which I am okay but it might put off certain people.

Most Penangites are believed to have serious obsession with Japanese food and if you are one of them, make your way to Gomo Wine Bar Restaurant at Campbell Street. Gomo is not the casual Japanese eatery nor the traditional Izakaya in the neighborhood, the team behind puts a modern spin on things. The Japanese-fusion menu offered by Gomo is extensive, but let's be frank here, it would not be a cheap meal out. Expect to pay at least Rm 40 per person for a main and a side order but the dishes are uncommon and rarely found in most Japanese establishments. Not only that the standards (for food) are high here, their service quality is top-notch either. If you are into alcohol, it has a good variety of Japanese Rice Wine and Red/White Wines. Gomo is a little hidden away, it's tucked within a nondescript heritage house along Campbell Street, facing L Kitchen.

We were definitely pleased to see the aesthetically presented Hiyamugi Pasta... cold Noodles served with Ebiko, thinly sliced Beetroot, Deep Fried Garlic flakes and Sesame dip. Though simple, it was most refreshing; as though we were having Salad... the Sesame dip was nicely done... not too creamy nor heavy to go with the Noodles

Truffled Wagyu Donburi (RM 35) is definitely an extravaganza to be indulged. The dish is simple, featuring Japanese rice, medium rare beef and tamago with truffle oil. Medium rare beef is well executed and did offer a refreshing feeling if compared to regular beef we used to have elsewhere. Nevertheless, we felt the rice texture could have been slightly solid to improve the overall taste as it was too moist for our liking. Perhaps we poked the egg yolk and the liquid caused the rice to absorb partial of it.

Gins has been the heart of the bistro, with its creation of house cocktails, classic and contemporary Gin & Tonic. Gin & Tonic has always taken centre stage at the bistro with its paring of local inspired garnish & variety of premium tonic water. We pair our gin and tonic carefully, few factors to consider, the aromatic of the gin, bitterness and dryness of the tonic, the chill from the ice, acidity and additional flavours from the garnish, and last but not lease the ‘hit’ from the alcohol must never be neglected. Let the pursuit in creating the best Gin and Tonic continues!

Indian-inspired Sweet & Sour Chicken is one of the latest creations... basically grilled Chicken Thigh served atop of Japanese Rice and Sweet-Sour sauce. The combination of Japanese Rice and well-grilled Chicken Thigh speaks for itself. The Chicken was good on its own... perfectly tender and juicy; the Japanese Rice was well-executed either. We did not however, enjoy the Sweet-Sour sauce, we thought it was way too sweet to our liking. The 'Sour' factor somehow went missing and it was saccharine sweet to dip the Chicken into the sauce.

One of the special items on offer- any order of the Teriyaki Salmon Rice Bowl comes with a cup of Coffee, Tea or Fruit Juice... cooked Salmon, Avocado, Greens (Cucumbers, Cherry Tomatoes, Broccoli) and Hard-boiled Eggs, served atop of Japanese Rice and over Teriyaki sauce. The combination would fit for any health-watchers; the Japanese touch of Teriyaki Sauce was the soul of the dish but everything was basically straight-forward, no extra seasoning was used. The winning dish was the Seared Beef with Red Wine sauce. My partner in crime did not like rare meat so we had to go for Medium Rare but the texture was still beyond amazing- so tender and meaty, the Red Wine sauce did not overkill the beefy flavor but good enough to provide a touch of flavors to the meat. This was the dish that we enjoyed most that evening.

Temari Bento amused us from its presentation but we suggest sharing, the huge portion of Rice will be too overwhelming for some. Unlike classic Sushi, the Temari Bento consists of some new, funky Sushi. Some examples would be Turkey Bacon Sushi, Pop Corn Chicken Sushi or Tempura Prawn Sushi etc. The flavor combo has not been too bad, or the fact that the Sushi Rice was well-cooked and seasoned.

We unanimously agreed that the best dish of the day was the Green Curry Udon. We were worried if the Green Curry will turn out to be too thick to go with the Japanese noodles but it was in fact, in the perfect consistency. It was not too watered down nor it was too thick, just good enough to cling onto the noodles and giving them the necessary flavors. The noodles were expertly cooked to the right texture either- bouncy and definitely not slouchy. For such a satisfying portion, we thought the price was well-justified.

Snow Story & Chef De Cuisine Cafe Restaurant

Penang's Japanese Dessert House

  • kenhuntfood.com
  • 2017-11-01 00:00:00+00:00
Tucked away from the bustling Penang Road, Snow story & Chef De Cuisine is probably one of the most "international" cafes in Penang... with a partnership consists of more than 3 nationalities. It started off with Snow Story, a shaved ice-focused Japanese dessert parlor manned by a Japanese proprietor (the wife is a local Penangite) and recently, joined by a couple from Hong Kong, who runs Chef De Cuisine. Snow Story offers a small dessert menu but the variety assures authenticity- everything is home-made and that includes the colorful sugar syrup, all made using natural ingredients like fruits and vegetables. For main, turn to Chef De Cuisine; the Michelin-starred restaurant trained Chef offers a unique range of Western dishes... with a delightful Asian touch. While quality is above average, the prices are lower than expected. The only setback is the limited seating, it can be a great spot to hold small lunch meetings or gathering otherwise.

Tokyo Yakitori is a new Japanese restaurant in town, sister restaurant to one of the oldest Japanese joints in Penang- Kirishima Japanese Restaurant (at Cititel Penang) but both are geographically near to each other. Though Tokyo Yakitori is just a few shops away from Kirishima, both are targeting different segments- Kirishima's offering is more superior in terms of ingredients and price points while Tokyo Yakitori is more wallet-friendly. Notwithstanding, Tokyo Yakitori still offers decent Japanese delights- from the standard Japanese appetizers to Yakitori (Japanese Skewers) to Sushi, Ramen and Bento Sets. In the evening, the place is turned into a restaurant cum bar that offers a vast selection of Japanese Sake to pair over their range of Skewers. Nevertheless, the place is still suitable for all age-range of diners and that includes both teetotalers and drinkers. Tokyo Yakitori can be found at the T-junction of Sri Bahari Road and Penang Road (next to Kheng Pin Cafe).

If you enjoy having some skewers, then Akiyoshi is one of the decent pick as you can see the chef preparing and grilling the skewers in kitchen. There are aplenty of choices but one of it we enjoyed is Gindara Teriyaki (Cod Fish). Its fatty acid gives it a greasy yet delectable taste, though we would have preferred a less bolder sauce. Otherwise, get a Shake Kama Syioyaki (Salmon Head) to have a taste on the chef's great grilling skills.

Oden in light soy-flavored broth comes in a variety of choices – Japanese fish cakes, tofu cakes, and skewered dried beancurd, a fantasy of “intestines”. The latter is one of my favorite ingredients, offering a nice chewy texture and strong flavor from the seasoning used. Eaten with a dab of green chili sauce definitely enhances the taste.

If spending an evening on bar hopping is one of your favorite activities to do on the weekends, this newly operated, unassuming Japanese Izakaya-inspired BBQ Grill House should take a spot on your to visit list. There are plenty of delights churned out from the grills, there are also some local dishes... the fare is mostly Asian. The alcohol menu is not extensive but a few selections of Beers and canned drinks. The setting is down to earth and laid back- with wooden pallets as tables while the irregular bricks as background, adorned by Chinese lanterns hanging across the ceiling. It does not feel like a very cozy bar but it can be a decent space to have a casual dinner/ supper.
