Explore the tranquility of the Taman Tugu trail, nestled beside Tugu Negara / National Monument in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Perfect for those seeking an escape from indoor monotony during the pandemic, this 6km forest trail is open to the public daily, from 7 am to 6:30 pm โ and it's absolutely free!
The Orange Trail in Taman Tugu is the newest addition to the parkโs hiking trail network. It adds an extra 1.2 kilometres and snakes around the once-empty eastern part of Taman Tugu. This trail is a low-to-medium intensity hike with a fair amount of uphill near the end.
If youโre planning to walk several trails within Taman Tugu, the Nursery Trail is a good warm-up or cool down hike. This very short trail is low-intensity and marked in blue on park maps. It is only 1 kilometre and will take less than thirty minutes.
Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 h 6 min to complete. This is a popular trail for hiking, trail running, and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.
The Sri Bintang Hill Trail is a popular hiking spot for the residents around the area of Bukit Sri Bintang. Although it is not as well known as other hiking spots in KL, such as Bukit Gasing or Apek Hill, there are always a good number of hikers around. It is a small area to explore with relatively easy hiking trails. While there are straightforward main paths to reach the peaks, you can also explore different subroutes and even loops, as there are many split paths in the area.
Long ago, Sri Bintang Hill used to be a part of the forest with Kiara Hill. It was then separated by the North-South Expressway flyover. Nevertheless, hiking activities to cross between these two areas are still very much doable. In fact, Trans Bintang Kiara trails have been regaining its popularity in recent years.
When you are in the forest and suddenly you see a wild boar, what would you do? When we encounter wild animals like this, our first action is to stop, slowly step back and to avoid them. But have you ever thought of hiking carefreely while wild boars are passing by and roaming freely around you? Ketumbar Hill is the place to experience this.
Cheras is a good district to find hiking spots, there are the well known Saga Hill, Apek Trails, Ketumbar Hill, and also the less known Bukit Besi, which sometimes residents around the area donโt know about. The name (Besi = Iron) comes from the neighboring Sungai Besi which was a historical mining town.
Bukit Kembara is a mini hill with both easy and steep tracks. It is a pretty popular hiking spot during the weekend, as you may find many cars parking along the side of the road. Other than the hiking trails, visitors often come here for the view at Empangan Tasik Hijau. Empangan Tasik Hijau is an old reservoir called Ampang Impounding Reservoir.
Taking the Bukit Kembara trailhead into the Ampang reservoir to Taman Tar is a one-way journey. If you choose to continue through this most difficult and least traversed section of the hiking trail, you may find that you literally cannot turn back if you change your mind. There might be points in your path where the slope is too steep or the drop too high for you to climb back up.
The Ampang reservoir is the second major milestone along the Bukit Kembara trail and follows a somewhat tough expedition down the hill. See my previous post on the Bukit Kembara Summit Hike for a guide on the first part of this journey. If you make your way up to the summit then continue to the reservoir, the whole trek should take you around two and a half hours, round trip.
Bukit Batu Chondong hike was a short but challenging one. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the top, but the path was steep all the way up. Some parts also require a slightly more technical climbing method.
Rating Moderate. Short but steep with inclines exceeding 60 degrees in places. Best for Beginners with some rock climbing experience.
The Ah Pek trails and Saga trails are two of the most well-known and popular hiking spots in Kuala Lumpur, located right beside Ketumbar Hill, which is also a popular hiking place because of the wild boars.
The Kota Damansara Forest Reserve is a boomerang-shaped green space with 14km of interconnecting trails. Most are clustered in the south, but the Harmoni trail is a secluded trail in the northern part of the reserve and the only one that starts in section 9.
Pros Short. Easy. 360 views. Cons Mosquitos. Wear a long-sleeve tee and long pants, and carry insect repellent. Rating Easy albeit technical climbing if youโre proceeding directly along the quartz ridge route. Be mindful that this route is hazardous as quartz is predisposed to breakage.
Bukit Serdang is a less popular hiking trail even for the residents nearby. Many people staying in Serdang do not actually know that there is a hiking spot in their area. Instead, most of them would travel further to Bukit Gasing or Puchong Wawasan Hill for a hike.
