It is peak autumn at Mount Takao, just an hour out from Tokyo. This is a pretty touristy place, means good transport, plenty of food and restaurant. There are some marvelous red leaves just in front of the station. We took the tram up, where the path are covered by red autumn trees. You could walk as well, but we are short on time. It is another 30-60 minutes walk up the peak depending on which path you take. We took no 3. The weather is perfect today, and we can see all the mountains. Fuji is slightly hidden with clouds at its top. Unpack our lunch from a bakery and enjoy the view. There is a restaurant up there as well. We went back on route no 1 and pass by a temple. Just in time for the last chair lift decent at 4.30pm and the sky starts to get dark.

his day hike was much easier than I thought, coming from someone who’s not really into outdoor activities nor did much hiking before (I had a really tough time hiking Mt Batur in Bali). The different trails Mt Takao has meant you can choose according to your preferences and fitness levels. Each trail offers different experiences and sights, ranging from Biwa Waterfall (perhaps even a monk training under the waterfall if you’re lucky), to a monkey park, Yakuo-in Temple, etc. I enjoyed hiking through the quiet forests for Trail 3 – the silence through the forests was a welcome delight. That path also gently forced me to stay in the present moment and focus fully on my journey.

Hiking Mount Daisen on a drizzling and misty day. Less than 5 degree Celsius on early November rainy day. The mountain is really beautiful despite totally misty at the top. We went up on the Natsumaya mountain trail which took us less than 3 hours to reach the top, as most Japanese elders overtook us. We came down on the Gyoja trail which go through a beautiful birch autumn forest, Ogamiyama Shrine and Daisen Temple.

Where the town ends are several temples and shrines (the most prominent of which is Daisen-ji, the temple dedicated to the worship of the mountain itself), which mark the beginning of the trails. At first, the ascent was slow and gradual, winding through tunnels of trees aflame in the reds, oranges, and yellows of Mid-Autumn.

I've been to Gunung Nuang more times than I care to remember already. This is one of Selangor's highest mountains, and it's not really a difficult mountain to conquer. Really. It only gets difficult when it rains - the path gets so muddy and slippery that it seems like for after every three forward steps one makes, one takes a step backward. That adds to the mental anguish, and it can often break one's will.

A beautiful hike up the hill to see long stone dragon and a good view of the surrounding area. There are two peaks, the one without the dragon offer a great view without the crowd. Entrance ticket is 100,000VND per person. There are 3-4 illegal parking collectors en route to the ticket entrance, so you need quite some determination to avoid then all (and park for free after ticket entrance) as they try very hard to stop you. I assume these operations are run by nearby villagers, collecting 10,000VND per bicycle.

By my count, there were 459 steps to reach the top. Yes, I counted. That’s some serious exercise, and another reason to show up early, before the sun is too strong. The stairs are uneven and steep, but the reward is worth every bit of pain. Once at the summit, you’ll want to take your time, both to recover and to contemplate the view. If you haven’t been to Ha Long Bay, it’s safe to say you’ve never seen anything like it.

I went hiking at Broga Hill with hubby and his friends on last Sunday morning. It was supposedly their plan, friends-only-hiking-trip with beers and all, but I shamelessly tagged along. Overly attached girlfriend I am. In fact, I wasn't completely a crasher after all as I was fully welcomed... I guess. :) But, I felt regret immediately when I stepped out my first step to the peak. My mind was like "Why am I here?" during the whole hiking process. And, after not getting any sleep for the last 24 hours, my hiking experience became much more worse! The Sanbangsa Temple and also the Bomunsa Temple, which holds the relics of Buddha, are also located on the mountain. Walk along the stone-steps between the two temples and you will find the Sanbanggulsa Grotto. A signal beacon called ‘Yeondae’ in Korean stands at the roadside in front of the mountain, which, in the past, used to fire and smoke to relay urgent messages. Regarding function, it is similar to the more well-known ‘Bongsudae’ signal beacons; but ‘Yeondae’ beacons were built around hilly or coastal areas while ‘Bongsudae’ beacons were built on mountain tops. During the daytime, smoke was used to send warning signals, while fire was used at night.

Trusmadi is famous for its pitcher plants of unique shape, and you get a nice view of Mt Kinabalu. We started hiking up from our base camp around 1am and it took 4 hours to reach the peak. The night sky is clear with plenty of sparkling stars. It gets pretty cold at the peak even though there is not much wind. We are lucky to see the sun rise with clear sky. There is a tower at the peak to give you 360 unobstructed views of the surrounding mountains. Trusmadi is quite a journey from Kota Kinabalu. It took 2 hours to Keningau, then another 2 hours by 4 wheel to reach the base camp. There are three routes, we took the Mastan Trail (Apin-Apin Keningau).

The last 300m to the summit was super duper muddy! But it was also because it was raining the day before. The views were actually nicer at the viewing tower where it was higher than the summit. But apparently the official board of Mt Trusmadi was fixed here first and hence they continued to use this as the summit.

I believe the Autumn for Mount Unzen is in early November, so we are late with no red leafs left. The mountain is misty during our hike so we can't see the surrounding trails, and the trail vegetations are quite nice. Since we are short of time, we took the cable car up and hike the loop back to cable car station, for about 2 hours.
