Clan Jetty in Penang is symbol of rich culture and heritage. It is situated along the eastern waterfront of George Town. Each of these jetties is associated with different clans that can easily be identified by their family surnames. At its peak, there were over 20 clan jetties in the area; seven of which are standing to this day and are currently protected by the UNESCO listing since 2008.

Chew Clan Jetty at Weld Quay is the Penang Living Treasure and Living Heritage. A Chinese settlement dated back in 19th century with the origin about 10 houses, Chew Jetty today is a huge community housing more than 1500 folks and also the largest waterfront village among all the clan jetties. This settlement is unique with their homes built on stilts along the wooden pier that extend to the sea or Penang Channel. The residents of each clan jetty are descendants of Chinese immigrants. Houses here are supported by wood/cemented beams, stand in a row on one or both sides of about a couple meters width wooden walkway.
