Coconut Milk Shake Special RM2.50 The overall taste is considered okay, smooth chilling and creamy in one go, you can even savor some shreds of coconut bits while slurping the milkshakes – We literally just take a few sips then have to say pass on this local famous beverage due to those disturbing dark stains all around the glasses, very much worried about their hygiene level since they simply just serve us pre-made coconut milkshake straight from the freezer, so folks it’s up to you to decide.

To me, this coconut shake here is average. Oh yes, I can taste the coconut water and also some of the shredded coconut flesh. Of course the vanilla ice cream does the trick of enchanting the taste and sweetness. Personally, I still prefer the normal plain fresh coconut water straight from the nut and the soft young flesh where I can have fun scooping it up with a spoon!

The pasta, which has spaghetti with mushroom, chicken ham and crunchy smoked duck topped with a poached egg and shaved parmesan, is delicious. The noodles are cooked al dente, giving them a nice bite, and the sauce is creamy without being overwhelming.

Food ordering is self service here at Jonker 88. Before you order, you need to find a table first. Then you also need to bring the food to your own table. The food is prepared pretty fast so even if there is a long queue, it won’t be a long wait.

Nasi Lemak Ujong Pasir is one of the longest standing nasi lemak berlauk stalls in Melaka. Interestingly, it operates in a Chinese coffee shop which also houses a couple of other Malay food stalls. A standard plate of nasi lemak here comes with a good serving of sambal, kangkung (it’s a Melaka thing) and omelette, and you can also opt to top up additional dishes for a more satisfying meal.

We wrap up the whole meal with a plate of stir-fry cabbage RM3.00 (RM1.50 per head) since the lady boss highly recommends to us, just decided to have it since it was cheap and need to meet our fiber intake quota for that day. 😉 Guess our tongue was malfunctioning because we really felt that the stir-fried cabbage was the best dish we had throughout the meal (the first dish we cleared in Hoe Kee), cabbage has an irresistible crunchy texture and tend to be less greasy, super sweet and flavourful with a delightful scent of garlic – with this dish alone guess we can clear a plate of plain rice without any problem!

I wouldn't recommend to join the crazy hype for chicken rice balls. Klang Valley has way better chicken rice... But I have to admit, their rice balls is something unique you can't really get in Klang Valley. Sorry to the friend who brought me there, thank you for lunch! No intention to sound so ungrateful, after all it's your presence that counts, not the chicken! I just can't understand the hype for it as it's really not that great - it works well for just very, very average chicken rice.

No offense to people who love Huang Chang Chicken Rice and willing to queue for it, but personally I think it’s terrible. In fact, the worst chicken rice I have ever had in Melaka. From what I understand, many people recommend this place because it’s cheaper than the rest. But cheaper does not mean a lot here because it’s not like you can eat and get out in a jiffy. The restaurant is stuffy too and definitely not comfortable for families with kids.

As for our first selection, we opt for the local famous Hee Kiaw Mee RM4.50 (small bowl) which consists of yellow noodles, fish ball, fish cake slices, fried fish cake, and pork. The soup base is crystal clear yet flavourful pack with pork broth, fried shallot, and spring onion garnishes, rather simple (great choice for elder people) but definitely a satisfying hearty meal.

That week when we were there, the sticks marked in Red are priced at RM1.00. The Green ones are priced at RM1.50 and the Blue ones are priced at RM2.50 each stick. There are some ingredients which were stuck with 2 sticks. The tiger prawns had 2 blue sticks stuck on it, so each tiger prawn costs RM5.00. So, if you do not want to break your wallet, remember to always count the number of sticks you and your family / friends took.

Overall, I wouldn’t say McQuek’s satay celup is fantastic but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t good. The satay sauce here is adequately thick with just the right balance of sweet and spicy. It’s a crowd-pleaser alright. As for the ingredients, the real meat and seafood skewers are satisfyingly fresh. The processed food items on the other hand taste exactly as expected so no surprise or disappointment there. Some of the more memorable items we had were the cockles (I had dozens of it alone), bacon and prawns.

The Chicken Parmigiana @ RM16.50 is one of my favorite things to eat here. The portion is big and I have never been let down every time I order it. Although I have been a frequent visitor to Melaka, Roti Canai Kayu Arang was completely new to me. In fact, I have never heard of it until last month. If there’s anything you need to know before coming here, is that this eatery is extremely crowded in the weekends, especially during long stretch of holidays. The wait for a simple roti canai could take up to an hour or more. So if you are not the patient type, you may want to skip this as not to ruin your day.
