Wholey Wonder Cafe on Jalan Gurdwara in George Town, Penang is a well known vegan cafe. Openings its doors in late 2016, the cafe is delightfully cozy with several styles of seating, including swing seats suspended from the ceiling. The decor is uniquely done up, with Spanish tiles and exposed walls. The cafe is a one-stop shop for all things healthy, with clever combinations of plant-based whole foods and a studio space for yoga upstairs.

Once an anomaly in Penang, vegetarians can now find aplenty of options in town. Nestled in the artsy space of Hin Bus Depot, Wholey Wonder is an excellent place for vegetarians and vegan. The menu is completely plant-based and the dishes are designed to appeal all palates. Options range from Pizza, Pies to home-made pastries; and the prices are well-commensurate with generous serving portion. The first floor is a space dedicated for Yoga classes and ground floor is where cafe located. Wholey Wonder has a nice relaxed atmosphere with vines crawling on the rustic walls, swings in front of the coffee bar and calming-soft background music; the place is not only good for a casual meal but over a cup of Joe as well.

Not too sure if it meant to be a hipster spot, Le Cafe does not have a big and clear signage, there's a small one at the side door (smaller than its window) though. It occupies a corner lot at Bricklin Road, a stone's throw distance away from the no-through road of Jalan Tye Kee Yoon and GAMA Supermarket. The interior decor is minimalist with a little industrial finishing, at the end of the cafe is a comfortable space most suitable for hipster-portraiture shots. Le offers a small Toast-focused menu in the mornings and snacks with alcohols for the rest of the days. In the evenings, visitors may opt to chill out at the al-fresco alley right next to the cafe. It may be a fun place to hangout or for a cup of drinks but we thought the food menu was a little less-exciting...

We had an Aloha Burger, which comes with nicely grilled chicken patty topped with Kraff cheese and a pineapple ring. The overall taste is good when having the burger with the dollop of sauce, but somehow on a personal level the pineapple gave it a subtle taste, which I did not particularly enjoy.

Meanwhile, Full of Junk burger comes with a juicy and succulent beef patty and served along lettuce, tomato, sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions and tasty cheese. We thought the patty saltiness level could be tuned down for a more enjoyable eating experience, as every components of the burger worked decently except for the over seasoned patty.

It it served along with tau kuah (bean curd), fish cakes, cucumbers and homemade peanut sauce, which done a wonderful job when glazed upon the various ingredients. Real prawns can be seen vividly upon cutting the crisp prawn fritters, justified its higher price tag should you need some good snacks in between meal.

This is my favourite which is Artisan bread, also the simplest of all. A simple toast with just butter and blueberry jam. The toast is so good that the texture is nice, where the size is also slightly thicker, spread it with butter and bluberry I would go 3 slices of it. One of the problem for travelers or outstation guest that drive will be parking issue as the place here is quite limited in parking space. Price range of this hotel is starting from RM300 onwards.

Well, we choose Kim Haus Spaghetti Aglio Olio Chicken (RM 22.90) and it did not disappoint. Spaghetti noodles were cooked to al-dente and was seasoned nicely with a hint of spiciness, then garnished with olives. We were surprised to see generous quantity of big chicken cutlets were served. It was great but the entire presentation or experience would have been better if the chickens were cut into smaller slices. Overall it was a great spaghetti.

Taiwanese Beef Noodle – RM20 per bowl, RM25 per set (with coffee). The noodle was served with braised beef and topped with vegetable, pickles and spring onion. The noodles are imported from Taiwan as the locally made noodles are made with lye water. The beef slices were braised in long hours until soft and tender. ÉNFD is an abbreviation of 'Énfold'- pronounced as 'unfold' with a meaning of 'gather and envelop' people through good food. It runs like a private kitchen, though walk-ins are welcome, the dining space is limited and could only host no more than 15 diners at a time. The dining hall preserves the sense of heritage with minimal interior decor; probably meant to encourage and enhance camaraderie amongst diners. It is a space that one could really talk and engage with each other. On the menu, the list of magical offering is unique and creatively crafted by the team behind ÉNFD; with focus on using Herbs and Spices ('local flavors') to intermingle with international flavors. The conservatives will find the menu too playful and to me, this is the attitude in lacking especially in the culinary scene in Penang. The brunch menu is only available on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 am to 3 pm.

Eat then Scream sounds like the ideal case for Eat Scream but we are not too sure whether it's for the good or otherwise. The newly opened cafe at Noordin Road, Georgetown offers a range of Indonesian delights and a series of Ice Ganefo (also known as Popsicle). The place is clean with simple setting but more than comfortable enough for a casual meal. It's a cafe dedicated entirely to serve a local menu, though at affordable-reasonable price range, we thought Eat Scream's menu is rather weak and they will need to come out with something more sturdy to compete with its competitors. As far as location is concerned, Eat Scream can be found opposite to Noordin Mews at Noordin Road.

Tucked away from the bustling Penang Road and Burmah Road, Areca Hotel opened its doors to the public in late 2016. It was previously a row of old, heritage houses right smack in the heart of Georgetown but has since refurbished and turned into this beautiful, colonial-styled building. But incredible to think many are not aware on its existence, probably the one-way street of Jalan Khoo Sian Ewe is an unmarked and unexpected location to most Penangites. Snugged at one corner of Areca Hotel is its in-house cafe- Areca Cafe (not obvious from outside and could easily walk past without noticing it), a quaint dining space with simple but elegant setting. Apart from serving breakfast to its hotel guests, it offers a promising Western-Fusion menu to the public as well. The menu is small but generally covers everything you need, whether choice of Chicken, Fish, Beef etc (dinner menu is only available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays).

The famous Puppy Chocolate Mousse does not come cheap... selling at Rm 30 per piece. It served to us frozen hard so the Mousse had the texture of Ice Cream. It was pretty chocolaty and delicately sweetened. It gets pretty surfeit due to its creamy nature so sharing is wiser. Was it worth it? Only for novelty experience, a hefty piece of Chocolate Mousse is not something you would want to eat on a regular basis.
