Nyonya Belacan Fried Rice, 16.90 ringgit. The Belacan Fried Rice, oooo man – da bomb. Every mouth was heaven. It basically consisted of belacan paste fried rice + Nyonya fried chicken + vege + papadum and belacan sambal on the side. I got exactly what I wanted, perhaps even better, what else can I say

Something closer to Chinese flavours is the Biang Biang Inspired Noodle (RM18) that reminds me of spicy pan mee. A simple yet extravagantly flavoured dish loaded with Szechuan chilli oil and toasted peanuts which is the epitome of soul food for me.

The Char Kuey Teow was really good. I can understand why many food bloggers rated Lai Foong to have one of the Top 10 Fried Kuey Teow in downtown KL. The noodles were well cooked and tasty, came accompanied with egg + cockles + fishcakes + Chinese sausages + lard + prawns + taugeh. Here, when you order LARGE, you’d get LARGE, Lots of noodles. A hearty meal that is a staple for most local Chinese families, the Hokkien mee RM9.50 is presented on a banana leaf-lined plate and is ultra-popular largely because of oodles of prawns, pork, squid and generous helpings of lard fritters. The mee is thoroughly enjoyable on its own but for locals, the canister of sambal belacan on each table is one of Restoran Kim Lian Kee’s primary attractions (our personal favourite as well)! 😉

Both the dishes were yummy, especially when after the chilli paste was added. It was slimy, gooey, flavorful, a good dish. Nothing else to say. Yup. I personally liked the Hokkien Mee more than I did the Loh Shu Fan. Them fat, thick yellow hokkien noodles cooked in thick soy sauce – ooo yum! With squids and prawns – yes, I ordered their seafood option, the dish was awesome.

The Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng was suggested to me by the kind lady who sat on the table next to us, seemed to be a regular patron and so, we took her advise. Glad we did. It was goooooood. As mentioned above, do remember to request for extra sambal though, the usual serving was hardly enough. The fried chicken either came in thigh or drumstick and since I am a sucker for more meat, lol – the thigh seemed ideal. It was tender, juicy, crispy and a perfect addition to the nasi lemak. Overall, a yummy dish.

The Hokkien Mee was drier than usual (their signature style), pleasantly aromatic with a subtle saltiness. It derived most of the flavor from the pork meat, offal and prawns that went into frying the noodle as well. We tried two versions, one offal and the other without, and the one with offal was noticeably tastier. Overall, the Hokkien Mee was alright, not great but definitely better than what Kim Lian Kee churns out – by a mile.

Despite what we felt about Koon Kee, there are surprisingly many good reviews about their noodles on various sites notably TripAdvisor and Foursquare. Maybe it’s due to nostalgia. Or simply because these people have never had a proper wantan mee before. In conclusion, don’t waste your time here and I bet the wantan mee stall in your neighborhood coffee shop could prepare a better tasting one.

Feng Cheng Sui Kao, 11.50 ringgit. This was surprisingly delicious. Between the two broths, I was more interested in the Tom Yum option. Just the anticipation of the spice and hotness left me all giddy. I assumed this would taste like the soup that usual accompanied chicken rice? It’s just there to provide some additional taste? Not really something you would drink up till the bowl is empty but boy, was I wrong. This soup was thicker than I anticipated and packed with flavors. Just deliciously different. As you can see, we decided to try the Mee Xian noodles here and it was a good choice. I liked it and the Sui Kao – da bomb! The dish came with 6 huge sui kao. Porridge was smooth and has very clean flavour. Tasted like it was simply salted. Hence, a dash or two of soy sauce is essential. The crispy intestine was enjoyable as well as the other thinly slices parts such as tongue and meat. Maybe because porridge flavour itself was non-heavy nor was it full-bodied, then that allowed the flavour of the raw fish slices to shine through.

Third stall, the one that's on the chee cheong fun stall's left) Their curry laksa with chicken @ RM10 turned out to be the most expensive of the three. When it arrived, my first impression was that the stall seemed rather stingy with their curry broth...which can be looked upon as a good sign...haha! :D That's because when they give so little, it's a sign that the broth is probably good and that's why they're so stingy with the amount. The bowl was filled with the required ingredients of soft brinjal and long beans, juicy pork skin and beancurd puffs that had absorbed the flavours of the curry, tender chicken and plump, raw cockles. The colour of the broth of this one had a more orange hue and it was also the least oily of the three. This indicated to me immediately that it probably had a bit more santan than the other two. Taking a sip of the broth, it was obvious to me that this was the best tasting one of the three. ^o^ It had the sweetness of the coconut milk that I wanted.
