Nothing much has changed and the friendly and approachable cook still fries his signature Hokkien Mee on a charcoal stove. The stock which he uses in his noodles is prepared with chicken bones, pork bones and prawn shells to give it a naturally sweet flavor.

My Personal Opinion If you're looking for a good Chinese nasi lemak with pork on the menu, a sambal and rendang that can give the Malay ones a run for their money....this is a worthy contender, for sure. It was certainly a lot better than many of the Chinese-made nasi lemak I've tried so far.

As for their Hennessy XO Seafood Noodle is indeed fragrant, alcohol taste is not too overpowering and is just nice. Seafood sweetness taste is there too. I can just finish this whole bowl myself. @ RM 18

As my friend are craving for their fried rice, I must say it is one of a very good plate. Fried to perfection that the grains are filled with wok hei, dry enough that can be counted by each grans, topped with pork lard and ham. – a dish must order.

Naturally, we opted for their signature one pork bone soup @ RM18.90. And like many other pork bone soups, Popo’s is also simmered for a long time. But they don’t add evaporated milk into the broth to achieve that milky white appearance and creamy texture.

For example, if you order the Superior Pork Bone Soup, they will make that soup specially for you. It may take a while for them to get the soup ready for you, but trust me, it’s worth it. If you look at the picture above, that’s what we got and how our soup looks like when it arrived at our table. A pot of soup with lots of ingredients and a big pork bone. No wonder it taste so good already.

Overall, food is so so, nothing to shout about as it is quite expensive from the ingredient we choose. Worst of all, the set back as below: 1. service were messy as there are only 2 floor staff. Told them to serve the order according to table but came out random 2. Serving us the food that we did not order, told them to bring it back. 3. Charge us the food that the order did not arrive where the waitress said is in their output order receipt. 4. Charge us extra 4 glass of green tea which we only of 9 pax order 7 glass only and each glass of green tea is RM 8, that is additional RM 32++ extra

For the soup version, we ordered the pork ribs with some meat balls. The soup is light with very heavy garlic and herb taste. Quite good, but I prefer Lim Kee’s better. It taste nothing like the Klang’s version as the bak kut teh in Klang are mostly heavily flavoured and the soup is very much thicker.

Hakka mee is also available, and best enjoyed with his “5 treasures beef ball” which comes with tenderloin, tripe, tendon, beef slice and a beef meat ball stuffed with juicy minced beef. You are also given two types of chili: red and green. The difference? The green version is concocted with belacan and spicier too.

Kedai Kopi Hiap Hing 协兴茶室 Restaurant

28, Jalan Sri Selayang Taman Sri Selayang 68100 Batu Caves Selangor Malaysia

Hiap Hing Kopitiam was the original coffee shop business which was started in 1930 by grandfather in Penang under a big tree nearby the Jetty to serve the workers and business people who were working the Port. During the Japanese Occupation, the Second World War in Malaysia, the Coffee Shop was relocated to 618-8 Jalan Pasar, Air Hitam, Penang. Then in 1964, my father who was the eldest son in the family, decided to open a new branch and named under Beng Chin Garden Restaurant which situated at 617-H, Jalan Balik Pulau, Air Hitam, Penang. Till today, both of these coffee shops are exits but the operation and management is run by my uncle and cousins. In 1970, my father moved to Capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur to seek his fortune. He decides to venture a new business called “Hainanese Chicken Rice” stall at Jalan Klyne (near Jalan Silang) at the heart of Kuala Lumpur until 1977. In 1977, my father was motivated to open his traditional Coffeeshop at Taman Midah Cheras and Jinjang. In 1994, we have shifted to our premises at Taman Sri Selayang, Batu Caves, Selangor. Our coffee shop, Hiap Hing is famous for its traditional kaya toasted bread with butter, special Hainanese brewed coffee and fragrant brewed teas which patronage by of our regular customers. This business has been in the hand of Lee’s family for more than 80 years under 3 generations.

Hiap Hing coffee shop in Batu Caves is famous for their Hainanese drinks, ‘bao’ and toast. Last weekend, we dropped by for tea break and had a good time. Although it was way past lunch hour and most of the food stalls have closed, customers were still streaming in for a cuppa. The operators are a friendly lot and will gladly chat with you about the origins of their coffee shop.

Claypot chicken rice 1 pax @ RM 8 (if I remember correctly) is filled with fresh chicken that is well marinated and Chinese sausage.. Soft and juicy that cook to perfection. Best of all, it comes with a slab of salty fish. (you have an option not to have it). But it is a must have ingredient for me in my claypot chicken rice.

Instead of ordering from their preset menu, I usually customize my order to include only the seafood I felt like having. Oyster is a must for me because it’s so hard to get really fresh ones in the city. This time, I went slightly overboard while ordering so the noodle cost me RM27.50. But as you can see, it was loaded with plenty of seafood so it’s worth the price.
